This is going to come across strangely.
What is the fastest, cheapest, most XP efficient way to lose a level in 3.5? (By XP efficient, I mean I dont wont to lose that much, I would rather be like 100 XP off)

The situation occured when we encountered a deck, what we thought to be a deck of many things. I drew two cards, and had to retrain one of my Dragon Shaman levels ( I was Brd5/DrSh6 prior). I am now Brd5/DrSh5/Wiz1, which means I am going to start taking an XP penalty. I am 500 XP over (At 55500)
and the only solution I have come up with is crafting scrolls then summoning and unsummoning a familiar.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know how much you exactly want to lose, but crafting magic arms and armor is probably the simplest; though scrolls work too in the long run if you plot out what you're making.

The cheapest way is to find a monster willing and able to suck your life force out of you, but then it's a danger to the rest of the group as well -- and there's no telling after how many levels it will decide to stop.

Otherwise, certain really high level spells take XP as well, but not too many you'd want to cast (and you probably don't have access to those at your level).

Don't you lose a level after dying and being raised by raise dead spell? If so fork out the cash for raise dead and kill yourself.

Unfortunately (?) the use of XP to create magic items in 3/3.5 only drains you to the minimum of your current level--or if you were levelling up and had enough XP to bring you over the level threshold, you could spend it on creating items instead of leveling, but that's about it.

The only two 'real' ways of losing Levels would be dying and being raised, or getting hit by a level-drain spell (Enervate?) or creature (Wraith or Bodak, for example?).

All things considered, if you want a "safe" route, find a high-level caster to hit you with Enervate over and over. 1d4 levels per shot.

Enervate never last more than 15 hours so it's never permanent. You'd probably need energy drain. You know what, the best way to do it is to capture/make/summon a level draining undead and have him drain you under controlled conditions.

um why didn't you simply retrain the shaman level into a bard one? would have saved you all this trouble. or did you already try that and was told no by the dm
?

See, this is the problem with items like that. If you were forced to draw two cards, and subsequently forced to retrain the level to a class that would force you to incur an XP penalty, then essentially the DM has just decided to punish you by penalizing your XP for a good while.

You should just talk to the DM about the situation, and hopefully he'll let you change it back, or something equally fair.

...now, if it was all your idea, then it's on you. Also, why didn't you retrain the class to your favored class?

I like this question.

This was obviously from using the variant Deck of Many Things from the PH2 web enhancement. You draw a card, and it tells you to do some retraining into a particular class (in this case, Wizard).

It's unfortunate, but the best way is to die and spend the 5k to be raised. Make sure you give your DM "The Look" as you scratch the money off your sheet.
