What do you think would be a good fifth member for this party? We've got a warforged paladin of Ioun, a human cleric of Erathis, a dwarf barbarian, and a half-elf rogue who uses a repeating crossbow. We're thinking a controller of some sort, but maybe a bard or even a fighter would be good. Please give us your suggestions.

Is the cleric STR or WIS baised.

If STR, then you are fine for melee chars, and a invoker or wizard could be a good addition as a ranged controler.

If Wis, then you might need another melee char, and you could get this from a fighter, weapon bard, warlord, of beast form baised druid (not 100% on this as have not fully read druids yet).

Sorry for not being clear. The Cleric is a WIS-based cleric. Ranged attacks and healing are her thing.

You have:

Warforged Melee Divine Defender
Human Short Range Divine Leader (healer)
Dwarf Primal Melee Striker
Half-elf Melee/Short Range Martial Striker

What I see missing is longish range arcane. I don't beleive that controllers are necessary for parties, but obviously a wizard would be a nice long range arcane contributor for the party. Plus, you'll get to have some fun with a brand new bok (Arcane Power) in a few weeks.

Alternatively, I'd consider a half-elf warlock. The warlock, although weak on damage, provides some control aspects via his techy abilities, and the half-elf race allows you to pick up some area impact powers easily to help with minion sweeping.

Personally, though, I'd go with your strongest theme (divine) and add a divine controller - a dwarf wrath invoker. I'm playing one now, and the combination of dwarf gruffness plus the 'holier than thou' potential of an invoker (Holy symbols? We don't need no stinkin' holy symbols to get our Gods attention!) can create a lot of great role playing fodder. I've only played him a few times, and he is already one of my favorite PCs. Plus in non-optimised parties, the wrath invoker can dish a decent amount of damage...

Wizard, Invoker or Druid.

Or a little smooshed face wax lion.

Play what you want to play.

If I've learned ANYTHING about 4E, it's that you don't need an "ideal" party make up.

You have 2 strikers...but play a striker if you want to.

You can always use more Defenders...play one of those.

Leaders are always loved...give it a shot.

Controllers are nice to have, but not necessary. Play one if it appeals to you.

...

See what I'm getting at?

Does the party have a "theme" that could narrow your choices down? Is there an overriding agenda you can use as motivation? Are there racial preferences you tend towards?

Thanks for all the responses. Currently we are looking at a dragonborn bard for that fifth position, but are also considering a dragonborn sorcerer.

As for an overarching backstory or theme, what we have is that the warforged has spent the last forty or so years of his life in a huge library operated by monks of Ioun. He has a huge amount of knowledge, but no real life experience. He has decided to go out into the world to spread what he has learned. He is gaining life experience from the people he associates with, his adventuring group. Each other member has a unique worldview. The human cleric is young and female and never shys from espousing the benefits of worshipping Erathis and following his statutes. The dwarf barbarian follows Melora and loves the wilderness. The rogue is a bit of a coward who is always hoping for a big score so that he can live the rest of his years in luxury and excess. Not sure what the fifth character's outlook will be like. Maybe someone who desires power.
