| #1pope54dcFeb 17, 2009 14:27:06 | Put the idea down if you must, but I'd love to make it.... Essentially what I'm trying to do is turn a great axe into an "axe-rod" (i didnt get to pick the name) what it would be is a great axe that when swung should I choose, the top portion comes off the shaft (lol shaft) and shoots out towards my enemies. The top portion would still be attached to the shaft by a 10-15' chain. Now I know this sounds ridiculous, but it'd also be awesome. Now getting the Axe crafted with the chain shouldn't be a problem, My question is what spell or device would allow me to retach/shoot out the top portion of the axe? and how would I (in game) get that done? again.. I know it's stupid... but I really really want one |

Ask your dm. work it out with him somehow. If I were your dm and you asked for one I would have you take a feat for an encounter power, but thats just me. |
| #3matthewstrykerFeb 17, 2009 15:02:11 | You don't need a spell. You need a button and a tank of compressed air. It should fire the same way as a paintball gun or a potato canon. You'd get this done by bringing your weapon to a machinesmith or weaponsmith, or the Mythbusters. I'd like to be open about your idea, but it sounds really terrible. |
| #4arkarianFeb 17, 2009 15:09:21 | You could make it a magic weapon similar to Throwing Shield, an at-will standard action power gives a range attack. Weapon groups available could be axe, mace, hammer, flail, pick. As a non magical weapon, I don't see how it could work after the first shot. |
| #5oxybeFeb 17, 2009 15:10:11 | it sounds like you want the bastard child of a greataxe and a kusarigama, able to swap between both at a moment's notice. IMO it's a pretty ridiculous weapon and VERY unweildly though. ask your local gnome and he'll probably have it done in a week and some explosives tacked on it for "kicks". for the mechanics discuss this with your GM. i honestly cannot say i've been asked such a question. |
| #6ambulacetusFeb 17, 2009 15:13:22 | I'll admit your weapon sounds ludicrous in the real world and probably wouldn't work. Ultimately, you would end up making something that is both a poor melee weapon and a poor melee weapon. However, D&D is a game of magic and magic, by definition, can do ludicrous things. A magical axe like this would be bizarre, but their are many bizarre things in the world of D&D. Of course, you need to talk to your DM when adding something into to game, but I could see a magical axe with something similar to the following power (I don't have my books so it may not be perfectly balanced in the right format). Axe Rod (How about hooked axe or axe of reeling instead?) This axe is viciously hooked, with a command word its head can be ordered to fly off towards an opponent. It will then hook itself into the their flesh, pulling them towards you as the chain magically retracts. Daily *Weapon Standard Action; Ranged 5 Attack: Strength verses fortitude Hit: 1D8 + strength damage and pull the target 2 squares (increase damage to 2D8 in paragon and 3D8 in epic) |
| #7Lord_VentnorFeb 17, 2009 15:24:06 | Try reflavoring the Farslayer Weapon from the Adventurer's Vault. |
| #8pope54dcFeb 17, 2009 17:45:29 | Ya normally I woulda just asked GM, but my group is alternating GMs atm. Thanks for the ideas, I'm definatly gonna use em. so ya I realise its ridiculous, but meh, I'm sure it'll surprise a few foes |
| #9undraveFeb 18, 2009 1:32:22 | I would actually reflavor the Acidic Weapon from AV (p. 62). Farslayer is too high level :p also Acidic's power is Encounter instead of At-Will. Nice surprise, just not too common. |
| #10Lord_VentnorFeb 18, 2009 1:34:35 | The Acidic Weapon can't be an axe, unfortunately. Well, it could I guess, if your DM was cool with it. RAW, the enchantment only goes on swords and spears. |
| #11undraveFeb 18, 2009 2:42:52 | The Acidic Weapon can't be an axe, unfortunately. Yeah but I would cut the 'acid' part of it all anyway so I think it would be balanced. Personally this property would look better on a glaive than a normal axe anyway. Or any other polearm. Would make it feel like a battle fishing rod :D |
| #12mouthymercFeb 18, 2009 7:40:46 | Reflavor the spiked chain into the chain axe or axe chain. Its new group is axe instead of flail. Or reflavor the halberd, but I would think something like this should be a superior weapon due to its specialty. |
| #13vharuckFeb 18, 2009 8:56:22 | I like mouthymerc's idea. Take the halberd stats, bump up the damage or add a new property, and call it a superior weapon. Then, when you're attacking enemies next to you, say that the head is still attached to the shaft. When attacking enemies while reaching, say that the head is being swung by the extended chain. The simplest answers are generally the best. |
