Miniatures, what?

Oct 27, 2011 18:14:51 I'm sure we've all had times where we had to improvise for miniatures.

My friends and I used to print out a sword, staff, etc and tape it to chess pieces for our miniatures.

I would also go through my old toys as a kid and try to build a monster out of it.

What have you guys used for pieces?

Oct 27, 2011 19:13:17 When I played a Summon Wizard, I used a couple of yugioh Dungeon Dice Monster minis for my summons. It was awesome as all hell really. Now if only my DM was kind enough to let me name myself Duke Devlin XD

Oct 27, 2011 21:49:57 To make everything easier, from battle maps to miniatures, I've created all I need from Microsoft Paint. I threw together a large terrain theme (in the current case, desert), then laid a grid over it and printed out multiple pages, lined it all up, and backed it with foam core board.

As far as mini's, I used the same process, downloading pics of monsters I liked and created paper dolls of the proper scale based off of my grid size. It may take a little bit of time to set up, but once complete it ends up much cheaper and just as functional as if I bought everything.

Oct 27, 2011 21:56:57 I've played at least one rpg using lego men as the miniatures. They're about the right scale to fit the maps and if you get really creative you can try to craft some of the larger monsters.

If you will permit me to go on a brief old guy rant, today's lego men come in way more varieties and have way more weapons and tools compared to when I was a kid! Back then, all we had was 2x4 blocks and we LIKED it.

Nowadays I don't use miniatures, because they are too bulky. Instead, I make coin-sized cutouts using The GIMP, for each character - one normal, and one "bloodied" picture. Then I cut them out and stick them to pennies, so you can simply flip the coin to show "bloodied". We've found these very convenient.

Now THAT is an awesome idea I didn't even think about. The pictures can be printed out clearer, and it's much easier to see what is what. I'm so stealing that!

Oct 28, 2011 13:53:23 If we absolutely need something makeshift, one of our players has a bunch of marvel squinkies we use. Also another member picked up a bunch of stuff to use for monsters and the like from a local education supplies store.
