| #1evolartJun 30, 2008 15:48:55 | We have only done a few sessions of 4th edition but last night one of us noticed the Mod + 1/2 lvl column in the Ability Scores area of the character sheet. In the part of the PHB where it explains the character sheet it does not explain what this column is used for. We assume we would be overpowered if this was used for all ability modifier's in the game and yet we cannot figure out what other use it has. That would be mean we gain 1 point in every ability every 2 levels and than would gain +1 in 2 abilities every 4th level. Can anyone give us a clue as to what this column is used for? |

Presumably, however, the doors in a 10th level dungeon are harder to break down than the ones in a 1st level dungeon... |
| #3evolartJun 30, 2008 16:03:11 | Don't we already calculate +1 every 2 levels into the formula for skill checks further down on the sheet? Guess it's just there to make it easier to calculate. |
| #4tipopJun 30, 2008 16:09:20 | It's not for skill checks. It's for ATTRIBUTE checks. Like when the GM says "Make a Dex check to catch the healing potion he tossed to you." |
| #5evolartJun 30, 2008 16:26:53 | Opps must of misread that... |
| #6drmorganesJun 30, 2008 17:36:54 | Effectively, the "standard modifier" of [Ability Bonus]+[Level/2] applies to all attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks. |
| #7AaronOfBarbariaJun 30, 2008 18:11:41 | Effectively, the "standard modifier" of [Ability Bonus]+[Level/2] applies to all attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks. ...and Defenses. |
| #8evolartJul 01, 2008 0:27:56 | But the column I'm refering to only applies to ability checks right? Otherwise we would be doubling the 1/2 level part. My attack bonus is 1/2 LVL + Ability + Class + Prof + Feat + Enh + Misc. If we added this column into my attack bonus than we would be doing 1/2 lvl + (Ability Modifier + 1/2 lvl) +... |
| #9tipopJul 01, 2008 11:26:11 | Yes, the column you referred to is JUST for attribute checks. You can use it for reference when you're adding "attribute bonus + 1/2 level" to other things, though. |
