More gold than I know what to do with

We've just started a new campaign and we made it to level 2 during our last session. In the last adventure we rid a beach of pirate trespassers and their false lighthouse.

After dispatching of the captain and crew (except the first mate who got away) we managed to locate their buried loot. The loot came in the form, not of gold coins, but of merchant goods. We loaded the loot back onto the ship and, sailing rather low in the water, went south to a large port city where we sold the goods at a DM designate 10% profit.

Even after we payed the crew we hired we wound up with almost 7,000 each. The DM set power limits on the magic items we could buy, but even after a master work composite longbow with a strength rating of 5, masterworked spiked brestplate, masterworked chain shirt(for sleeping), and an adamantine maul I have roughly 2000 gold left over.

Similar situations have happened in previous campaigns, and our DM wasn't wise enough to set magic item limits that time. Our rogue got so decked he took out a Frost Giant Jarl by himself, in 1 round.

I'm wondering, did our DM make a mistake giving us that much wealth? No one else seems to mind but it doesn't sit right with me. If it's perfectly justified, than maybe you can give me suggestions as to what else I should buy.

I'm currently a level 2 Bear Totem Barbarian, and I'm looking at the Bear Warrior PrC from CW.

Wealth has a tendancy of balancing itself out over time. Sure, you might have an easy level or two, but you'll barely notice in 2 or 3 levels, unless wealth keeps falling in your lap in equally proportioned amounts.

If you really don't want the money, then donate it to a temple / orphanage / assassins guild. (You can never have too many assassins guilds owing you a favour)

You're significantly over the wealth by level table, but you defeated some generally loot-heavy enemies so that's to be expected. I'd be asking for a handy haversack at this point... it's not especially powerful but it's very useful.

If not a handy haversack, donating to an organization you'd like to improve your relationship with is a good idea. If that doesn't appeal to you, perhaps you should see if you can buy some land... not that you can do much with it now, but as your levels increase you might be able to build it up into something useful, or at least interesting.

Get some spells premananced on you, buy an adamantine covered wagon, also donate to a church as a pre-emptive ressurection buy off.
Buy the inn you started the game in, collect a 10% fee each month. (I forget where I saw it but somehow the barkeep makes more money than his costs are by 10 times the value)

At second level you should each have about 1,000 GP worth of gear with no item worth more than about 500.

So he gave you 7 times as much as you should each have.

I'd buy land, and invest in trade caravans, or a stable, or something.

Or start my own town, or a church.

Use the left over money to make a moderately small stable, and hire a few stablehands trained in basic care of monstrous animals. Buy a few males and females of an exotic monstrous animal, have the stablehands tend to the animals and get them to breed while you adventure, then, later on, terrorize dungeons with your horrifying doomcreatures that have been bred to serve you, and only you, with a fiery passion nigh unbreakable.

Or, heck, just start a Blink Dog petting zoo.

So you stole stolen goods from the pirates and sold them for profit, which makes you, what? better than them because you're not fouling up the beach?

Even if you got to keep and sell the pirate loot it shouldn't have been at 10% UP it should have been at 10% of the value. Your characters aren't spending months setting up trade deals and contacts to get the absolute best value, and besides it's hot. You want to unload and go, so a savvy merchant would offer you a pittance on the total value so you unload it in one day.

Blah blah blah, anyway point is I'd buy a ship and take up piracy. Or anti piracy, prey on the pirates. It's obviously a lucrative business either way.

Oh yeah, getting the whole party on board as pirates and building up a crew of hirelings, friends built up over time, and later followers and cohorts too, that would be loads of fun. I suspect if the OP would consider that option they'd already have mentioned it, though.

Oh sure, just as I'm sure the OP already thought of and didn't mention:
· a handy haversack
· donating to an organization
· buy some land

Which in fact is probably why the OP posted the thread in the first place, they'd already thought of every possible option and decided to just toy with us.

Maybe you could enlighten us with everything else the OP has thought of and not yet mentioned so we don't waste our time coming up with more redundant ideas?

I meant going into the piracy business is clearly the best possible option and really goes without saying, that this thread even exists implies that for some reason he's deliberately going for the silver medal rather than the gold, rather than making a simple oversight. :P

I knew there was something fishy about the whole affair. We justified our actions by saying, "well, these pirates did kill an entire family. Dead women and children to fuel my barbarian rage!"

And I personally have toyed with a number of options, purchasing a tavern and donating to a temple. The donation would be atrociously out-of-character for me so thats out.

As is, we've commandeered the pirate ship(after changing the flags and sails) and we've decided to sail among the islands of a large chain east of the starting cities. Who knows, we might end up buying our own island!

Thanks everyone, you've been an enormous help! I especially liked the idea of breeding our own beast thralls. I'm thinking Displacer Manticores.

I played in a campaign where we literally had too much money... but, of course, we we around 12th level.

The campaign had basically taken place in far remote regions with no significantly sized towns ANYWHERE!

Needless to say, by 12th level or so, we had accumulated quite a bit of treasure (in a multitude of different forms, gold, equip, gems, magic items)... which we basically hauled around on a massive cart. We had about a dozen of huge barrels full of platinum... but nowhere to spend it.

Then the DM dropped us in Sigil.

We bought so much stuff we had to spend an entire session (4-6 hours) going shopping. After selling everything that wasn't vital, we EACH had around 140k gold (which really isn't all that much, since we had vastly underpowered equipment at the time).

Everyone at the table had the same stupid grin on their face once the DM mentioned a "bazaar" :D

One character actually blew his entire 140k on two rapiers (but they were so shiny!)

Ah, you just havent found the right temple, ther has to be one patron to the pleasures of the flesh. Or better yet, start your own, the temple of temptations, to sax, drogs, and bardic music!

Put it in a big pile, and roll around in it. Just to say you did.

real answer: Bag of Holding. It's useful from level 2-50.

Bag of Holding

OR

Blink Dog Breeding ground, where you name the first bred "Admiral Theodore Scruffalofagus" and then name all the blink dogs after him "Blink Dog Apocalypse Soldier [Insert Proper Number Here].

I think the choice is clear.

2000gp is exactly how much it costs to make that maul +1. After going to the trouble of getting something that's designed to bypass DR/adamantine, you can't ignore DR/magic.

Endless rations: 600 gp - endless rations for one person (i.e. you)
Bottomless Tankard: 300 Gp - enough water for one person (you)
Jewel of comfort (forgot the real name, effect is that you don't need to remove your armor when resting) - 600g

Or just buy a ring of featherfall and never worry about falling unless your dm is mean.
