| #1undraveJul 12, 2009 22:22:38 | So me and my group have been going through the H modules since last year at an irregular rate. We are presently making our way through the Duergar in Thunderspire Labyrinth. I've been playing a Cleric since the begining. Originally I had a human Cleric of Sehanine but due to the theme of the game (we call it the 'Bahamut game' now) where our goal is to rebuild the Keep, I changed character after Keep on the Shadowfell, going for a Dragonborn Cleric MCPaladin of Bahamut. Both had Healing Strike as Encounter 1. I think I hit with that power only enough time to count on ONE HAND! Its insane! Its an awesome power and its always great when I hit with it but I got the most rotten luck with it! That and my level 3 encounter which I got off the Paladin list isn't much lucker. Just last session we had two encounters and I didn't hit with either my encounter powers in both of those battles! In the last one I rolled 1 on BOTH my attacks with my encounter power!! Its not even the dice, I have three d20 and rarely use the same all the time. Let's not even get into how I NEVER got to gain anything from using Avenging Flames -.- I quickly retrained it to Beacon of Hope once I leveled up. Anybody else has a 'cursed' power they NEVER seem to be able to land? |
| #2sallaJul 12, 2009 22:23:32 | My Cursed Power was Avenging Flame, too. My wife can't ever connect with On Pain Of Death ... |
| #3undraveJul 12, 2009 22:35:03 | Unless I'm a striker I'll NEVER pick a daily that has no 'effect' line ever again. EVER. Seriously 'miss: half damage' is just not satisfying. Especially for a leader! I wanted to move away from Beacon of Hope since all our Clerics had used it so far but it was a mistake. Its way too frustrating to miss with dailies not to get anything in return. |
| #4Cecil90670Jul 12, 2009 22:40:57 | Playing a 7th level shielding swordmage at the moment and took Dimensional Vortex at 3rd. In the 4 levels since, I've hit 1 time. We average a level every three play sessions with anywhere between 2 and 4 encounters per session. I know for a fact it's not the dice, because we play as a group online, so the random factor is in there. |
| #5Plaguescarred1Jul 12, 2009 22:46:39 | Hahah yeah mine's too. In fact it's a saying going on on our current campaign and at the local stores when one of us plays some Delves That Healing Strike is CURSED ! |
| #6undraveJul 12, 2009 22:53:46 | Maybe Healing Strike is too good and the universal karma balances it out by making it less likely to hit XD |
| #7ValienJul 12, 2009 22:58:45 | With my Drow Rogue, troughout the whole Heroic Tier, i think I hit with Darkfire 3 or four times, tops. And yes, I was aware of the bonus to attack rolls. But I couldn't land it anyway. After so many misses, now I only use it when I absolutely have to. Cloud of Darkness FTW! |
| #8lady_ishtarJul 12, 2009 22:59:40 | funny but when we started playing 4e we had a cleric who from level 1 to 4 hit only once with Healing Strike, after getting a +17 bonus to hit! |
| #9undraveJul 12, 2009 23:02:45 | I don't have that problem with my bard...at least not that I noticed... I rarely had the chance to use my encounter so far actually. I'm too busy spamming at-wills most of the time. Weird coincidences. |
| #10smashyerface_dupJul 12, 2009 23:09:22 | Maybe Healing Strike is too good and the universal karma balances it out by making it less likely to hit XD The exact same thing is going on in our group....I made a cleric as a healbot to round out the group (Bill the drunk cleric of Melora), an other players joined to try out 4e and used Bill and between the two of us I think we hit w/ Heal Strike maybe 3 times. It became comical after a while. Now Bill is not with the group after that player decided 4e was not for him and another players created Momma a cleric of Chauntea...and yet Heal strike still does not strike. |
| #11NovacatJul 12, 2009 23:16:59 | My Warlord could never hit with Viper's Strike. It got to the point where I retrained out of it, because over the course of 3 levels, I never once hit with it. |
| #12undraveJul 12, 2009 23:32:42 | At least Viper's Strike's an at-will so you can try over and over again. Maybe we just notice more on Healing Strike because when its actually needed is usually when someone needs healing and thus its sort of an important moment? |
| #13AttilatheNunJul 13, 2009 0:00:54 | My party's wizard never once managed to land a Chill Strike for the first three levels of his career in playing through KotSF. My cleric seemed to do alright (laser cleric, didn't pick healing strike) but Omin Dran from the PA/PvP podcasts was having trouble with his healing strike as well. |
| #14tiornysJul 13, 2009 0:03:48 | I used to roll the dice for the party's Fighter, who gamed with us via Webcam (he now games with us live as he has finished school). I was very excited when he picked up Anvil of Doom at level 13, since stun is such a powerful status effect. As the party's tactician (and player of a Tactical Warlord), I made sure he never used it without at least combat advantage, and I often set him up with a sizeable to-hit bonus before he used it. First three Anvil of Doom attacks? Rolled a 1. Since that inauspicious opening, we've had much better luck with the power, but I was already joking about the power being cursed before it finally landed. t~ |
| #15Plaguescarred1Jul 13, 2009 0:17:27 | At least Viper's Strike's an at-will so you can try over and over again. Exactly ! You hold on it 'til someone is really in need and when your buddies are bloodied, they all look after the Healer. But that damn' power isn't working most of the time so what they do, ishhh they look at you like an unreliable combat-medic !!! So you have to say minute minute, i have a Healing Word in back-up. ;) The power should have been IMO something like this: Healing Strike Cleric Attack 1 Encounter ✦ Divine, Healing, Radiant, Weapon Standard Action Melee weapon Target: One creature Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Strength modifier radiant damage, and the target is marked until the end of your next turn. Effect: You or one ally within 5 squares of you can spend a healing surge. |
| #16undraveJul 13, 2009 0:18:31 | The God of Dices is a fickle one. As an effect it would have been too strong as is. Maybe 'Miss: You or one ally within 5 squares of you regain HP equals to your Charisma modifier'? Just to give us a little something! |
| #17AttilatheNunJul 13, 2009 0:28:14 | Or maybe if you kept the heal as an effect but downgraded the damage to 1[W]? |
| #18DevoDogJul 13, 2009 8:23:49 | The player in my group who WAS playing a Ranger missed more than twice as often as players who would only make 1 attack roll. The same player now misses regularly with the attacks during his turn, but hits with his Opportunity Attacks. |
| #19pluisjenJul 13, 2009 9:32:34 | For a try-out game I had a cursed Dragonborn Fighter. I ran the entire party so my girlfriend could try out DM'ing and the guy managed to miss with his daily power 3! times in a row, rolling 1, 2, 2 for it. He also missed with his encounter power during both encounters, all his At-will's except for one hit with his Sure Strike against a lowly Kobold he had combat advantage against while he was bloodied, and while throwing a Javelin. He also rolled a 3 for initiative in both combats. Poor bastard, with such luck he should've never even made it to first level... |
| #20smashyerface_dupJul 13, 2009 10:56:55 | The God of Dices is a fickle one. Or even an adjacent ally, or ally adjacent to the target. |
| #21vebrandssonJul 13, 2009 11:29:09 | The God of Dices is a fickle one. Perhaps if you call him by his right name he may relent some. (dice is plural, die is singular, dices is the 3rd person form of the verb "to dice" [chop up finely] and has little to do with D&D unless you're players are getting carved up by monsters, which is probably your problem :P) I can honestly say I nor any other member of the group have never had a character with a "cursed" power, sure I miss now and then but I tend to have fairly accurate characters, perhaps The Dice God likes me :P |
| #22dark_lamboJul 13, 2009 11:50:00 | The Dice God I was under the impression that Luck be a lady. :P |
| #23undraveJul 13, 2009 12:54:05 | I was under the impression that Luck be a lady. :P In 4e the goddesses are also refered to as 'god of somemthing' so the God of Dice can be male or female :P |
| #24CCSJul 13, 2009 13:29:18 | In 4e the goddesses are also refered to as 'god of somemthing' so the God of Dice can be male or female :P True. But I think your confusing the two of them. First there's Lady Luck. Who's concern is luck. All of it - good/bad, how it applies to various/any situations, etc. A very broad domain. Then, operating beneath her, is the more specialized dice god. Who's specialty is dice. Luck based? Yes. Invoked often? Yes. But still only a minor god due to specialization & ultimately having to answer to a more powerfull member of the pantheon. |
| #25AttilatheNunJul 13, 2009 13:49:15 | Possibly it's something like you see in some pantheons where the Dice God is an aspect of Lady Luck. |
| #26undraveJul 13, 2009 13:50:14 | So the God of Dice is an Exarch of Avandra then? |
| #27pint_glass_crusaderJul 13, 2009 14:41:30 | As a Battle Cleric of Bahamut (with STR:18 and a greatspear), I've never had a problem with Healing Strike. However, my Orc Warlord (with STR:19) never hits with Warrior's Surge... and neither do any of the other Orcs in our group... that's certainly jinxed! I have to ask, are those Clerics with Healing Strike running on STR scores that give a +2 modifier? That might be your problem. +2 with a Mace, gives you a +4 attack. That's really not going to hit anything tougher than a poorly armoured minion with any regularity. |
| #28static-avengerJul 13, 2009 15:30:35 | when i choose powers,for any class i am atm,i always look for the ones labelled 'reliable'.cos i suck at hitting,just at the wrong moments.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
| #29electricboogalooJul 13, 2009 16:18:02 | You may all blame my brother, Scotty. His multiclassed dwarven fighter/cleric took Healing Strike as his encounter swap. On his first several usages he critically hit. Since, no one else in our group has been able to hit regardless of buffs, high stats, rerolls, or combat advantage. Now I notice that Scotty has caused the power to short out all over the community. Blame him. Blame Scotty. EB |
| #30ashmanonarJul 13, 2009 17:25:50 | Criminy, yes. I couldn't hit with Healing Strike for the life of me when I've played clerics. I went Wis-based and used the wisdom powers (with which I could hit with at least some regularity). |
| #31undraveJul 14, 2009 0:50:50 | I have to ask, are those Clerics with Healing Strike running on STR scores that give a +2 modifier? I have 17 STR right now (+3), a Holy Healer's Mace +1 (+3), I'm level 4 (+2) and I usually pull out Divine Fortune when I'm not facing undead at that moment (+1). That means a total of +9 to hit. Even there I fail!! >< |
| #32pint_glass_crusaderJul 14, 2009 5:53:56 | I have 17 STR right now (+3), a Holy Healer's Mace +1 (+3), I'm level 4 (+2) and I usually pull out Divine Fortune when I'm not facing undead at that moment (+1). That means a total of +9 to hit. I just MC'd into Avenger!!! Gone are the problems with hitting anything... woohoo! That [recharging] Oath of Emnity is literally a godsend! You still need a bit of skill [and luck] to get that "lone monster" isolated, but when you do it's time to go nuts! It's just a pity you don't get a bonus skill (as MC Avenger gives you the Religion skill), but rolling twice to hit is the next best thing to making your Healing Strike (and others) reliable. |
| #33t1p2Jul 14, 2009 13:24:22 | Anybody else has a 'cursed' power they NEVER seem to be able to land? For me it is Sequester (Plaeshifter Paragon Path Attack level 11). My Warlock is now level 14 and I have never hit with it...my d20 usually rolls extremely well for me (usually nothing lower than a 15-16). But each time I announce the attack I always roll a nat-1. Though I suppose having a warlock power that is "cursed" is a bit ironic. :D |
| #34pluisjenJul 14, 2009 13:52:51 | I just MC'd into Avenger!!! It's why my Cleric loves his Elf-ness ![]() I use my Elven Accuracy on this power like 9 times out of 10. |
| #35misterfido_dupJul 14, 2009 15:03:22 | I have a lucky Flames of Phlegethos. I cast it every day, and always a 20. |
| #36mkillJul 15, 2009 13:03:34 | Most of my chars are doing fine, but my Swordmage has a cursed power: Foesnare. I probably should have picked a power that does something more useful in the first place (immobilized is great if you're assault, but I'm shielding), so what was I thinking. But just to rub it in, I've constantly missed with the damn thing. I'll kick it as soon as I reach next level. |
| #37cespinar_dupJul 15, 2009 13:53:27 | I just MC'd into Avenger!!! Only as a MC oath it never actually recharges. You can only get 2 rounds out of it.... |
| #38babooniclesJul 15, 2009 23:42:44 | Rain of Blows.... I might as well throw down a basic attack some days instead, would probably deal more damage and I'm a spear fighter! |
| #39sallaJul 17, 2009 2:50:37 | Strangely last night, my melee basic attack was cursed. We had the perfect setup ... Warlord on one side, Warforged Mordenkrad Fighter on the other side. We got flanking. I have Warforged Tactics. He's got a feat that gives me another +1. I will hit our target on, like, a FOUR when he calls for Commander's Strike. One. One. One. |
| #40SymarJul 18, 2009 13:32:54 | My Warden can't hit with any attacks. He only gets one or two hits off per encounter. Sure, he could get a couple points higher on attack rolls if it was a more 'optimal' race, or something, but it wouldn't change my horrible rolls. |
| #41tipsygiggleJul 22, 2009 7:29:32 | I have a level 8 fighter that hits well, but has cursed saving throws. When I do make it, it's the last round right before the encounter is over. However I've been knocked below 0HP twice and rolled 20s then hopped back in the fight. Once, when I was mind-controlled by a Vampire Lord, I was hacking away at my friends and then so another player had his PC run up and slap my character. After that it was my turn and ironically then I made the saving throw! |
