| #1SaraMistressSep 28, 2013 11:24:58 | I have been working on a Rouge/Ranger Hybrid. He deals mostly in ranged attacks, and can wield a hand crossbow in his off hand and can reload it with one hand as a free action. We are starting at lvl 2 and I'm using a human so I can have the extra at-will and feet. At-wills: Duelist's Fury, Twin Strike, Deft Strike. Encounter: Shadow Strike. Daily: Trick Strike. Utility:Stalkers Mist Feets:Two-Fisted Shooter, Backstabber, Lethal Hunter. I made him to do massive damage when sneaking, and to hang around the back of the battlefield and picking off enemies. Also I picked the animal master theme, and have a pet money. I plan on using him to extingish light sources so I can become hidden easier. Any comments or CONSTRUCTIVE critizim is welcomed. |

Your character, from an optimization standpoint, might not be as mechanically effective as your expections of it... Striker/striker hybrids are often a bad idea, since hybrids only get their striker class feature on class powers and paragon path powers from the particular class that class feature comes from - you, for example, would only get hunter's quarry on twin strike but not on your rogue powers, and sneak attack only on your rogue powers but not when using twin strike. Note that this doesn't include Basic Attacks at all, so that rules out getting either hunter's quarry or sneak attack when making an opportunity attack or when a leader in the party uses one of their powers to give you a basic attack during their turn. In combat, the general solution to this is to use twin strike (or one of the ranger Encounter multi-attacks) as your standard action most of the time and then take minor-action attacks from your rogue side like Low Slash to get in both another attack on your turn and allow you your sneak attack damage. Interrupts that can be used off-turn such as the ranger's Disruptive Shot are also useful. Hybrids, as a general rule, almost always tend to heavily favor one side over the other (they're more like 1/4 of one thing and 3/4 of another rather than 1/2 of each). You'll mainly be using the ranger side in combat and the rogue side out of combat. Since you're most often going to be using twin strike, and thus getting hunter's quarry, I'd consider ditching the Backstabber feat - upgrading from d6 to d8 is only an average increase of 1 point of damage and even with sneak attack (+2d8) thus giving you an additional two points of damage, as an archer you're going to have to work much harder to get Combat Advantage to qualify for sneak attack. Melee rogues get it most often through flanking, which you won't be doing much. Since it's difficult to get Hidden during combat, consider replacing Backstabber with something that gets you combat advantage more often, such as Distant Advantage or Cunning Stalker. As an archer, especially with a hand crossbow, you won't often find that hanging back outside the fight is the best strategy. Quite often, you'll be just outside of melee range. Also, this thread, The Rules of Hidden Club, in the RULES Q&A forum will be helpful. (Head over to the Character Optimization forum to check out the class handbooks for the ranger and rogue as well. Just as an aside, either class will work very well all on their own as a stealthy archer, so you may be better served by sticking to one or the other. It's very easy for a ranger to pick up Thievery as a trained skill through multiclassing into rogue or through a Background.)
As for the monkey, the rules for it were published in Dragon Magazine #399. As a DDI subscriber, you can look it up in the online Compendium. Per the Compendium entry... "The animal doesn't have a normal compliment of actions, but can take a move action when you take one. If it has a power, it can only use it on your turn." So the animal can't take any actions on it's own and you can't command it to take any actions except for moving when you do. The only exception is commanding it to use the Distracting Attack power: Distracting Attack Distracting Attack
At your command, your animal friend darts forward to bite, rake, or peck at your foe. Encounter Requirement: Your animal minion must be within 5 squares of you. Target: One enemy in the burst Effect: You gain combat advantage against the target until the end of your turn. |

But which one of the fey beasts would you reflavor as a monkey?

| #8DameanMay 25, 2014 11:03:18 | I had originally had my elf ranger multi class into rogue cause it matched well with my background and I took a lot of the advice on LBD's handbook as far as powers/feats. Due to resent events and associated advise from these forums, I looked into ranger/rogue hybrid and I really like it. |
| #9baldhermitMay 25, 2014 10:05:55 | Please say rogue. Rouge is something different
As you get twin strike, I would suggest raiding both classes for minor action attacks, move actions that allow you to do something else as well, and interrups. |

| #14Seth_UlrikJun 11, 2014 5:42:19 | What space said is pretty true. You wind up a little low on Will. Though you can start at a 13, bump it once and it gets one at paragon and you can then take Superior Will. Brutal Scoundrel is the better Hybrid Talent when you go melee. Go in with Light Blades, or possibly Spiked Chain (one weapon to worry about and still light blades). |
| #15thespaceinvaderJun 11, 2014 5:52:58 | Nah, rapier/Dagger for my money. Elemental Initiate if you're concerned about item economy. Spiked chain is usually the go-to but when you're doing balanced DEX|STR anyway, you may as well keep your options open. Keeps you access to the ranged options if you want them (and some of them are pretty nice, particularly ranged Disruptive Stike, Arrow of Vengeance, Snap Shot, and the 27th level 'when a target is damaged' power). |
