So, I'm going to be starting up a campaign with some friends soon and I'm having some trouble with figuring out what kind of character to play.  Right now we're doing an evil-based group, with a cleric, a paladin, and a necromancer (the paladin and cleric worship Nerull).  I was thinking I should go for some sort of ranged archer-type character just because I am terrible with sorcerers and things like that because I get super confused with the spell system for D&D. So I'm curious as to what you guys think might work well in that group, whether it's just a base class or a prestige class I should work towards.  I'm just having a lot of trouble since I don't really know many of the prestige classes or anything.  I was thinking a ranger/rogue, but I haven't quite decided yet.  XD

Either a ranger or a rogue sounds like they would be a suitable add to the party mix for their ranged damage role, but the rogue may blend in with an "evil" campaign a little better.

Sounds like 3.5 or something earlier. Since you have lots of healing from the cleric and paladin, how about a barbarian? What evil group doesn't have a big muscle-man with an axe in your face? Also on the evil group topic, I hope you guys already have a concept for your main enemy or rival, so the game doesn't turn from evil-party to arsehat-party.

Yeah, we're using 3.5.  It's a campaign a friend is doing and yeah, we've all discussed it and some of the people already have experience doing an evil party in the past.  I haven't, so it's going to be a new experience for me.  XD

I was trying to go for ranged since our cleric was going to mostly be our healer, paladin was planning on being a "tank" character, and then the necromancer was going to be our casterish type.  That's why I was figuring on doing a range to kinda round it out.  And yeah, with rogue I figured I could maybe gear towards Assassin or the thief-acrobat class I've seen.  I'm not totally sure though.  I was just hoping people might know of some others that might be interesting and fun to play that I might not have heard of.

I think rogue is probably your best bet, as it allows you to get a sneaking/thievery skill set the rest of your party is going to be lacking. If you have pscionics, you might be able to go with a soul knife (assuming they have those in 3.5).

I'd actually steer you away from the Rogue.  It's one of the more "player skill" intensive classes, and heaven forbid if you're easily confused by the "spell system" then there's not a chance in hell that you'll be any better as a Rogue.

Your first instinct was probably the correct one: Archer.

Tbh, I think rogue is one of the easiest classes I've played.  XD  I've done rogue, druid, ranger, cleric (for only a session or two before the campaign fell apart), dragonshaman, and I tried a spellthief but I just couldn't get the hang of that one.  The ranger I played, however, I don't really know if I'd consider actually playing it.  It was in a campaign where the DM was like "ZOMG YOU'RE A GIRL?!" and just kinda threw stuff at me, like my character's animal companion turned out to be an awakened dire wolf because it "fit with the campaign"  >.>

And yeah Lokis.  I was thinking about that.  Are there any other classes that can find traps/open locks like a rogue can or would I have to be a rogue to do something like that?

 3.5?    Multiclass.
Start at level 1 as a rogue to get a crap-ton of skill points, then alternate between rogue and ranger...  Play a human, put your highest score in Dex, your next highest in Int and Wis, and go the archery route for your combat style, which gives you the most important archery feats for free... Sink your rogue skill points into the skills that aren't on the ranger's list such as Disable Device and Tumble and the ranger points into the ones that the two classes share, like Search, Hide, Move Silently and Spot. If you concentrate on pumping up no more than seven or eight primary skills (Search, Disable Device, Hide, Move Silently, Tumble, and Spot, for sure) you can keep them at very competitive levels despite not being a single-classed rogue.
You won't be getting your sneak attack damage as often as a melee rogue, but being evil you're probably going to be ambushing people most of the time, which is the easiest way to get sneak attack at range. Convince the paladin to pick up some javelins or other ranged weapons to help you out with the opening salvo before he closes into melee. Consider taking the Weapon Finesse feat and picking up a rapier, since with a party of that size you'll likely find yourself in melee at some point.

What books are you using for the campaign?

Both the Scout and the Beguiler have the Rogue's Trapfinding ability, and both classes have skill lists similar to the Rogue's and get relatively the same number of skill points.

personaly i think that every party should have an assassin. it would be even better for an evil party.
