| #1eluxisJul 14, 2008 11:18:19 | I’m playing in a new campaign this weekend and I need some help choosing which PC I should play. Here’s the makeup of the party so far: Dwarven Fighter Eladrin Paladin Eladrin Rogue Human Warlord Tiefling Undecided - Is going to play a blasting mage unless I play a mage, in which case he’ll play a HellLock. I’ve narrowed it down to 2 possible characters and I am equally partial to them both. We had to roll our stat arrays in front of the other players last week and I came up with: 16,15,15,15,11,8. I used the same array for both possible choices. Here goes: Number 1: Human Wizard (orb) Str 8 Con 15 Dex 15 Int 18 Wis 15 Cha 11 Skills: Arcana, Dungeoneering, History, Insight, and Religion Feats: Armor Proficiency: Leather, Improved Initiative, and Ritual Caster At-Will Powers: Ray of Frost, Thunderwave, Scorching Burst Encounter Powers: Icy Terrain Daily Powers: Flaming Sphere, additional in book: Sleep Number 2: Elven Ranger (TWF, but mostly uses bow) Str 15 Con 15 Dex 18 Int 11 Wis 17 Cha 8 Skills: Acrobatics, Athetics, Nature, Perception, Stealth Feats: Quick Draw, Toughness At-Will Powers: Nimble Strike, Twin Strike Encounter Powers: Fox’s Cunning Daily Powers: Hunter’s Bear Trap Any suggestions? |

Here’s the makeup of the party so far: Assuming the Tiefling goes with a warlock, I'd go with the wizard. That way your party has a wizard in it, which is useful for crowd and minion control and for their various utility spells and free access to rituals. If the Tiefling goes with being a wizard, though, then I'd go with your striker. Since strikers usually only hit one target at a time, I think doubling up on the strikers is a little more effective then doubling up on the wizards. |
| #3hellmuteJul 14, 2008 21:21:21 | I would go with the wizard also to have the tiefling hellock. 2 strikers 1 controller 2 defenders 1 leader You seem to be a bit weak on healing this way, but the control of the field seems pretty good. This was the breakdown for an optimal group I had figured out to be best for 4th. It would be the same way no matter which you chose, but I just favor warlock to ranger.... |
| #4feiJul 14, 2008 21:29:11 | If you have only to choose from those two, I think your party would need the wizard more, seeing that it has no AoE controller yet. Aside from that, I personally would prefer a warlock as a second striker rather than a ranger, since your party already have a rogue. So I'd say you play the wizard, your tiefling freind play the warlock. The reason for this is that Rogues and Rangers normally hit vs AC (Rogues can hit reflex too), while Warlocks can hit more varying defenses, so a rogue and lock can attack more defense types than rogue and ranger. These are only personal opinions though. After all, it all comes down to the most basic question. Which one would you enjoy playing more? :D I usually just go with the one I like most. |
| #5rainkissJul 15, 2008 16:14:14 | Well, the obvious question, which do you WANT to play? Which one of these builds is more than a bunch of numbers and skills to you? Which one has a FACE? Play that one. ![]() EDIT: Ninja'd by Fei! |

That was the problem, I've written a detailed background for both, and they would be equally fun to play. The Ranger is a very dark hero, who is trying to make amends for the evils of his past. I based him off of Crow from Hawk the Slayer (the best worst movie ever). The wizard is more of a fast-talking troublemaker (think somewhere between Madmartigan from Willow and Mahoney from the Police Academy movies). To make matters worse, I've just rolled up a Dwarven Cleric of Kord that I'm also itching to play. He's more of a cross between Wolverine and Bagby from Trainspotting, if we are going to keep with the movie comparisons. I'll probably just randomly choose one right before we start. |

You cant go wrong with rolling a d4(1=ranger, 2=wizard, 3=cleric, 4=reroll) Personaly, Ive played a TWF ranger and im currently playing a devoted cleric and I prefere the cleric by far. |
| #8feiJul 17, 2008 5:41:58 | Well, then, Eluxis, I can only say, have fun :D Jera's suggestion isn ice, too. When you're in doubt, ask the Dice God. I know I did that at times :P (Usually leading in my Character getting too involved ith another character. In one of my games, my PC even got married with another PC due to one of these "let the dice decide" will saves. It's fun though :D) |
| #9eluxisJul 17, 2008 17:05:24 | So I did end up going with the d4 method. I'll be playing Sturgis "Stormy" Steelstubbs, a Dwarven battle cleric of Kord in the campaign. We start on Saturday. |
