| #1evilholyguyMay 10, 2008 14:56:00 | My DM is letting me play a half dragon and I'm looking for some good choices. My rolls for stats are thus 14 18 12 15 15 17 i was wanting to play a sorcerer but what other options are good? |
| #2khadmusMay 10, 2008 15:14:27 | Do you take the appropriate level adjustment hit? If so, spellcasters might not be what you're looking for. What is the base race? Why is "me" emphasized? |

What is the base race? yes i do take the lvl adjustment hit the base race is human and the "me" is emphasized for 2 reasons 1. because no one else is allowed 2. I'm the only one who wont break the character beyond the point that the DM says no more |
| #4anansiMay 10, 2008 15:34:20 | How do you break a half-dragon? |
| #5evilholyguyMay 10, 2008 15:36:23 | How do you break a half-dragon? dont know but my DM says hes had someone do it before ![]() |
| #6khadmusMay 10, 2008 15:37:48 | Your reason 2 is very interesting...how do you break a half-dragon? I advise against sorceror. Although it seems nice, having more dragon blood does not actually boost them in any way: and since you lose 2 spell levels (as well as not benefitting from any of the template's abilities), I'd consider it a bad idea. A fighter-type might be useful, to A) Get back the hit points you lose for having less levels; and B) Use the +8 Strength and natural weapons to advantage. Which type you choose is up to you. As for which dragon to be half of, I haven't the foggiest idea. |

| #8evilholyguyMay 10, 2008 15:50:51 | ...wait... Friggles, my familiar, just gave me a nice yet stupidly obvious choice... SAND DRAGON!!!!! any comments on that choice or should i choose differently |
| #9evilholyguyMay 10, 2008 15:58:51 | Next post decides if im a Fighter, Barbarian or some other official base class that is melee oriented |

| #11EkkoeMay 10, 2008 16:06:23 | I have not heard the word "core" mentioned, so if you're going to play a half dragon, either pick a nice feat combo for your fighter (spiked chain, anyone?) or go with Warblade (unless you want to break, because there's a crusader trick on the forums somewhere...) If you really don't want to break the character at all and just want to play, the monk would be a nice choice... you'd have to get your HP back, but as a half dragon, it'd be a whole lot more playable. Colour of the dragon? Just pick an extreme alignment and pick your favorite. Half dragon is a pretty straight forward; you giv +2 LA, you ged strength, claw, immunity and breath weapon. Might want to look at personal preference or past combats. Would you prefer cones or lines? Fire, acid, cold or electricity? Have fun! |
| #12green_yawgmothMay 10, 2008 17:27:13 | Classwise, I'd definitely say monk. Typewise, I'd first like to ask where the sand dragon is located. Then I'd suggest pyroclastic (fire/sonic breath, 50% chance on each immunity) or shadow (energy drain immune, 1 neg. lv cone breath). Some of the gem dragons get some nifty things as well, and many have breath weapons of force. |
| #13evilholyguyMay 10, 2008 17:40:18 | Sand dragons are found in the desert and the book that they are in is Sandstorm |
| #14khadmusMay 10, 2008 18:02:26 | I have no idea how a half-sand dragon would work, because I can't find any damage type... You might want to try the shadow: it could be interesting versus spellcasters. |
| #15atsettamMay 10, 2008 18:03:35 | This might help you select a dragon type for your character. Link I can not help you as far as a class suggestion. Sorry. |
| #16green_yawgmothMay 10, 2008 20:23:15 | I have no idea how a half-sand dragon would work, because I can't find any damage type... It would just be damage of no specific type, the best kind of damage. Also, the sand dragon's fire immunity is pretty solid. |
| #17khadmusMay 11, 2008 8:12:41 | Oh, fire immunity. Yeah, I suppose the sand dragon would be cool. I'd personally choose the shadow dragon; but since you seemed so enthusiastic, go for it: it seems nice. You could be a strength monster with Barbarian, and if you take some feat from Complete Warrior you could reliably shatter a stone or iron door when raging. Warblade might look good if you can; I'm not sure how natural weapons work with monks. |
| #18StevenOMay 11, 2008 13:03:30 | What level (ECL actually) are you starting at? With LA +3 that means at least 4th level at which time the only classes that could work are the martial ones. If you get to play at a high enough level dipping into Sorcerer from a martial class and then grabbing some levels of Abjurant Champ may also be interesting. As for the dragon type that will depend on the character (to get the flavor right) or what you expect to face (the metagame approach) before deciding. I see someone mentions an LA +2 which is incorrect, at least in 3.5. The Half-Dragon Template adds CR +2 to an NPC but PCs get stuck with LA +3. |
| #19blaze12685May 12, 2008 12:51:28 | I would definitely consider a melee class. I think the best option is monk b/c you get to add your wisdom to AC, so between the Dex, Wisdom, and natural armor a dragon gets your AC will be great :D ! Not to mention that the monk is best unarmed and w/ your strenght bonus you could deal lots 'o damage!![]() As far as which dragon. Going off of core dragons (meaning the chromatic/metallic type), I would suggest gold b/c you get two beath weapons. Great to have in case you run across something that is immunie to one of them. |
| #20shaggy_shaggsMay 12, 2008 13:06:50 | I was going to suggest pyroclastic but green_yawgmoth beat me to it. I really dislike missing hitdice, though; I'd probably go changeling duskblade 4/warshaper 4/pyroclastic dragon disciple 10/X 2 and get my half-dragon on that way. X possibly being War Mind, full BAB would get me up to the four weapon attacks threshold, I could boost strength a bit further with expansion and chain of personal superiority, and the reach from expansion would be nice as well (particularly since I'm already boosting reach with warshaper, if you're keeping score). If human is a must, a human duskblade 5/pyroclastic dragon disciple 10/war mind 5 might not be too shabby. You get 2nd-level psywar powers and more power points, as well as sweeping strike that way. Mmm... sweeping strike. |
| #21korgoththepristMay 12, 2008 13:07:31 | Why do fighters have to be Melee? There great at Range as well! Well anyways your Melee character should possible be a Mix, not a stright class Barbian/Fighter is a great Mix, Your bonus fighter feats can be used to give you extra Rage or w/e if you want. Nice BaB + Strength useage. Just use Monkey Grip your +8 to Stregnth = +4 to hit vs +2 La and vs -2 to hit with Monkey grip = Worth While, So do the norm Barbian tastic Rage + 2 Handed Monkey Grip Weapon! HorZar! That might be something you can look up. But lets see the Dragon? I Like Acid more. Becouse alot of creatures need Acid damage to die (Like Trolls and stuff) Plus its Rare to see Acid being used, inless DMS are trying to **** Players (And do, or Watches his monster get raped insteed) Allso If you want to be cheesy you can take Wep Pro WarMace and be able to use it in 1 hand, then you use enlarge it so It must be wielded in 2 hands (Matial now) And I beleve someplace you can learn that YES you can even monkey grip this to make it larger! just with a bonus negitive to hit. which i wouldnt do becouse 1) I dunno where they came up with this possiblity of YES it can happin and 2) Its cheesy, which you dont want to do so Ignore all that. Just do what i said normaly |
| #22sinfire_titanMay 12, 2008 19:48:51 | Your reason 2 is very interesting...how do you break a half-dragon? Massive Str bonuses, immunity to energy types, and a huge Nat Armor bonus via Half-Ogre is the easy way. Even more-so if it is the Savage Species Half-Ogre, not the Races of Destiny version. Blue, Black, Sand, Force (good luck on that one), and more or less anything that isn't Fire or Cold-based. Both of those energy types are commonly resisted, and thus not very wise for offense. |
| #23taylors005May 12, 2008 21:28:43 | i realize you said half-dragon/human and you dont mind the LA but i saw (somewhere in this forum) an interesting premise involving a dragonborn raptoran with the dark template its supposedly like a 1/2 shadow dragon for a +1 lvl adjustment just fluff |
