Need to hide from the other players!

Okay it's a fairly simple situation.

Our party was coming back from completing a quest on a certain island, and our tiny row boat happened upon a creaure that i can only remember being described as a mermaid ogre? In any case, during the fight most of us were dragged in the water and couldnt get back up.

ne character was way too heavy to swim back up by himself, the other could breathe underwater but kept failing his swim checks, and the other could swim but he wasn't doin much in terms of usefullness.

I tried saving some of them and also tried fighting. Honestly it looked hopeless at that point, the ogre was also kicking our butts. My character being chaotic neutral, and no real reason to put my life in danger, swam back up to the boat and rowed for my life! xD

With that being said... my party miraculously beat the damn thing, and survived. Now, i would have gone back for them if my character knew they survived... but, even so the other players have been waiting all week and they are threataning that they are going to hunt me down and kill me D:

Now.. im almost sure that the DM wont let them kill me off for such a reason. I mean, any real person would try to get away in a seemingly hopeless situation. And im a rogue. Anyways, but just in case they do decide to hunt me down. I need to gfigure out a way to either make my character go into hiding or make them lose my trail. Im a rogue so hiding is my specialty. But they will probably just hire a tracker or something to make up for their lack of search capabilities.

What kind of actions can i take to increase my chances of survival? Can i hire the theies guid? Should I just run as far away as I damn well can? I need some ideas! D: Thanks in advance.

Make sure when they find you that you are on your way back with a cleric to raise them, proper underwater breathing equipment and a burly fighter or two to kill the creature Wink

When all looks hopeless the ability to recover the bodies turns more important than the fight for a CN.  Remember, just because you are CN doesn't mean you don't care about your friends, but you can logically argue that if ALL of you died no one would be able to bring you back....

Personaly as both a DM and Player i wouldnt hide rather probably try and make nice. I say this for a couple of reasons - first, you'll be splitting the party into two group. You and Them, now while your following probably a good thread for a story, you run the risk of annoying the other players. Remember inter PC conflicts rarely end well, you have to have a pretty good relationship with another player to work something out that is fun for everyone, and you've got an entire group!

If everyone in the group is completely cool with it however, it will run the other way.

I'd act as if I cared about them and was happy they were alive.

Since you apparently don't "actually" know that they survived yet, it will be up to your judgment whether your character would have cared at all to organize some kind of recovery effort, though I'm doubting it. Hopefully also, you didn't yell out any parting words you would now regret?

However, their characters must be loaded with treasure right? So some form of "recovery mission" on your part may not actually be that far off the mark...

A decent boat, maybe potions of water breathing ... All quite reasonable if you wanted to retrieve their bodies for raising ;P

Unless you've betrayed them before I think "plausible deniability" is enough to let you rejoin the group. If you want insurance, ask the DM whether your character might have picked up some useful information or item from his tactical retreat and separation, that would now benefit the other party members too.

EDIT: And moving forward in the campaign, perhaps your character might come to respect the others more, come to appreciate them, and eventually not turn tail and abandon them when the chips were down. There's got to be some reason being around those guys helps further your own goals.
