So I finally picked up 4E with my friends, and we immediately began to discuss ideas for a new campaign. After things were settled with getting people together to play, we kind of went a couple of weeks without discussing it. Now, having talked to my friends, it seems that only two are going to be starting the campaign. That leaves one DM and two PC (myself and my other friend). My friend has already chosen an Eladrin Wizard (I was away for last weekend when he created his character), and that leaves me with options.

I don't know what class I should take because I know that with my friend being the wizard, I will have to be the "tank," and I don't necessarily want to do that. When I create my characters, I have, for the most part, created his back story first, and then see what class fit the character. Now, I feel like I don't have this option, especially since we're only going to having two characters in the party.

The good news is that two of my other friends are considering joining this campaign a little after we get started, so I'm thinking that I have to choose a class that plans for that. We're starting at Level 1 with the idea that our characters are ready to pursue adventure on their own.

Here's a bit of the back story for my character:

Orphaned at a young age, [InsertName] was taken in by the leader of a small mercenary group, after they had rode into a burning village and "saved" him. He was too young to remember who his parents were, but knows that they, along with the rest of the village were murdered. As he has gotten older and matured, he has recently started to believe that the very group he calls family, and the man that he looks to as a father, were the ones responsible for his village being destroyed (he hasn't actually pieced everything together, and I've left this up to the DM to play it out however he'd like as the campaign moves along). This usually occurs when the group is hired to do things in similar fashion that would remind him of those moments as a small child.

Being trained by his "father," he has only had few experiences in battle. Before he was acting as supply boy and helping his family get ready for their missions, but now, he has been given the chance to prove himself and move up into the ranks of the mercenary group.

What do you think?

If the character is starting to feel abandoned by the ones who raised him, then he may feel like he has no purpose in the world. With no purpose or guidance it would be a good excuse for the character to seek religion. The character has some combat experience and with combined with religion makes a good reason to become a paladin. Maybe he wants to do the wrongs of his "father".

The paladin is a tank (defender) that has some healing abilities. The Divine Challenge well make it harder for creatures to hit the wizard. You can use the heal skill well and have lay on hands.

That's an interesting aspect that I could use, and am now definitely considering. Actually, this might be something to flesh out and deepen the character later down the road (for multi-classing), depending on how the DM will flesh out the story and what missions that the mercenary groups decide to take on.

Thanks for this.

I think a fighter with warlord multiclass would also fit well, especially if he was groomed to take over the bandits from his "father". It provides some good healing benefits as well and fits nicely with a purely martial/non-religous character.

Fighter into Warlord could work as well.

How effective do you think a Ranger would fare?

Fairly well.

But the best advice I can give you is to simply make whatever type of character you want. You don't have to be the tank just because your friends chosen to play a wizard. Or the cleric because no one else wanted to play one.
All you need to do is learn to play the game.....differently.
And your DM should be taking into account what types of characters his players choose to play & responding with appropriate adventures.

So graft that backstory onto whatever race/class/personality you think you're going to enjoy playing.

You're right. I should just shoot for what I want, and not have to fill a certain role that someone else doesn't.

Will do.
