(roughyly 4-6+you) Pool some money and buy the players handbook, monster manual, and dungeon masters guide, and a set or two of dice. A sheet of graph paper and some thumb tacks help for combat. Pick one person to be the "Dungeon Master" their job is to run all the people you guys interact with that are not the characters. The dungeon master needs to be loosely familiar with both the dungeon masters guide and Monster manual. Everyone needs to know the players handbook. From here the books will explain better than anyone could online. The books http://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Core-Rulebook-Gift/dp/0786950633/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1_s9_rk?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&s9r=8afd3cfe179b829c0117a7dfee030217&itemPosition=1&qid=1231401540&sr=8-1 The Dice http://www.amazon.com/Chessex-Dice-Polyhedral-7-Die-Translucent/dp/B0015IPGB4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1231401562&sr=8-2 (non official cheaper dice that do the exact same thing) I would suggest buying used if money is a problem, or you have people unsure about joining. |

After that buy the following 4E books: 1) Players Handbook 2) Dungeon Masters Guide 3) Monster Manual Read #1 & 2, reference #3 as needed before you ever start. Make up a sample character as you read #1. Have the rest of the would be players read the players handbook prior to actually playing. |
| #4congzillaJan 09, 2009 13:51:58 | If you don't know if your going to like it then pick up the starter set for $16 on Amazon, it has the basic rules and adventure, dungeon tiles, monster tokens, pre-made characters, and a set of dice, everything you need. From there H1 Keep on the Shadowfell would be a good next step. |
| #5kuonjiJan 09, 2009 14:30:33 | Puctuation is your friend. Learn to use it. Really. I mean if you are going to criticize someone's post and all... After that buy the following 4E books: This is pretty much it. |
| #6ciaranJan 09, 2009 20:17:16 | Buy the books listed above plus: -Friends with the same interest. -Dice for everyone. -Pencils and paper. -A table large enough for everyone and their things. -Something to run the fights on. Many use a plastic roll-out mat with a 1 inch grid pattern on it and wet-erase markers. Look online. You can use grid paper and pencils easily too. -Everything is just icing on the cake. Get starter before you go overboard. I was just curious, why are you interested in playing? |
| #7vforgeJan 09, 2009 21:13:05 | Yes. All of these things and more. You'll need a passion for storytelling. You'll want to sit in a room for hours with your friends and put up with their various personalities and bond with them at the same time. Trust me, it will be lots of fun. You should also look up some samples of actual play online. Avoid the parodies. Actually some of those might be kind of accurate.. Sigh.. Read the boards here, they will be invaluable also. |
| #8DragonsWrathJan 09, 2009 22:27:24 | If you have not-sucky internet, download the char builder http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/insider/characterbuilder I felt I learned a lot just by choosing different options and viewing the changes on the character sheet it makes. Many of the mechanics are quite interrelated, but char builder handles all that for you. While learning how those formulas work is important, knowing the answer you should be getting is just as important. ;) |
