Not turning out the way I hoped

My PC (LG Human Fighter 14) is getting the chance to create the Greatsword of her dreams, but it's not turning out the way I hoped.

She's in a major Dwarven city, and has found a Weaponsmith who can make just about any sword she can think of. He is willing to take the powerful Orc-fighting sword she renounced* and some other items she isn't using in trade and make her a new sword with up to +10 total features.

*Background:
Way back when she was not quite 4th level, she got a really nifty +2 Greatsword that ended up being an intelligent, dedicated, very powerful Orc-slaughtering Greatsword of Legend. The downside was that Wisdom is her dump stat, and the sword could easily control her into fighting any Orcs she came near, whether she wanted to or not (DC 14 Will save).

At 9th level she made the first level attunement to the sword and got some neat abilities, and for a long time she was pretty much an Orc-fighting machine. Eventually, though, OOC it got kind of boring to me as the player, and IC it was getting dangerous to the party since we were becoming more and more involved with politics and stuff.

Then she threatened to attack the party's cleric when he wouldn't give the sword back after the party managed to take it from her before she could kill the Orcs guarding the Temple of Gruumsh in the capital.

The Cleric responded by telling her it just proved she couldn't be trusted with the sword. When she realized how close she had been to hurting her friends, she came to her senses and realized she she had to give up the sword. Not long after, she went to her temple and renounced her attunement. The plan was for her to find a way to trade/sell the sword where it could be put to good use, and have a new sword made that she could design for herself.

1) Considering that it came from both Players and their Characters, and D&D is a group/social game ... I'd say you did make the right decision, even though it may not be what you wanted.

2) ... Spell-Storing (Heal, Holy Word, Banishment/Dismissal), Merciful (if that's in your character concept), Thundering (What, it's not Roaring :devil.

Since the sword is being specially crafted for you, there's no reason the trigger has to be a command word. What about a Roaring sword that is activated/deactivated by tracing the rune for "thunder" on the blade, or by turning a lion's head ornament in the hilt? Or heck, have someone else deactivate it when stealth is required.

Spell Storing is very handy as well though - I think it'd be worth making it +4 Holy Roaring Spell-Storing, as having a stored Searing Light, Bestow Curse, Dispel Magic, or Ray of Exhaustion are all better than another +1.

One of the PC's in my party has a spell storing sword that typically holds one of my spirit shaman's Creeping Cold spells. As it also has a Flaming crystal in it, the effects can be amusing.

Spell storing is good because it gives you flexibility. If you have no idea what you are fighting, and have a wizard in the party then this gives you the ultimate flexibility.

If you want rare energy damage, how about Psychokinetic? Force damage gets past everything, even if it is just 1d4. Or go for good old flaming or vitriolic ... Keen might be handy but only if you haven't got and never in tend to get Improved Critical.

Holy is worthwhile, always, but Axiomatic is less so. You might be better off investing in a couple of Bane effects (now if you fight demons, how about a Holy Axiomatic Demon-bane weapon? Ouch!).

Spell storing + silence for the irony

Spread the mute :D

A buddy of mine talked our DM into letting him put a pearl of power into a spell storing sword in place of an enchantment crystal, letting him recall a spell into the blade with incredibly effective results.

Roaring is normally an "always on" feature, I didn't think of asking if it could be modified to be manipulation activated. I think I'll run that by my DM. Of course, turning it off would negate a big part of the sword's abilities.

I thought about Spell Storing, and I may try to substitute that for Eager. Only problem is, for various reasons, it's always been hard for me to get our spell casters to cast spells just for me. I might have to get a wand, or a bunch of scrolls--they don't mind using an action, just not a spell slot, even if it's done well in advance.

Could you make it a singing sword that could speak for your character through the attunation or whatever?

I'm curious what the backstory is on the mute and also how you handle in character explainations to both your party and NPCs (like the guy building your sword)?

You could ask them to store one of their leftover spells at the end of the day, although of course that means you will have to pick from the remnants of their spells rather than getting the best choices.

I'm curious what the backstory is on the mute and also how you handle in character explainations to both your party and NPCs (like the guy building your sword)?

Backstory:
About six months ago, game time (almost a year in RL), my PC (LG Human Fighter, Level 11 at the time, now Level 14) had a run in with a strange creature on the Plane of Earth. When it offered to help the party on its mission, for a price, she let its flattery and her own pride go to her head, and offered it the three drops of blood it requested, before anyone could stop her. It was an evil Fey, and she ended up its Blood Thrall.

The mission was sucessfully completed, but the Fey followed the party back to the Material Plane. Whe the party's Paladin found out what she had done, he told her in no uncertain terms exactly how much trouble she was in, and that she apparently owed the Fey three services in exchange for the help it had given.

As soon as she got back, my Fighter headed straight to the Temple of Odin (she sort of followed the Norse pantheon) and asked for help and advice. She went right up to the Head Cleric and confessed what she had done. Once the they all stopped laughing long enough to answer, she asked what she could do–not to get out of the deal, but to satisfy her debt to the Fey with the least harm to (as she put it) the world, her companions and herself.

The Cleric of Odin consulted with the Cleric of Loki (and the Fey, which had followed her) and told her she could satisfy the debt in one of the following ways:
  • Murder a husband she hates – She doesn’t have one and wouldn’t do it anyway.
  • Sacrifice her first born child – She doesn’t have one and wouldn’t do it anyway.
  • Put out her right eye – No! That’s what a Cleric of Gruumsh does!
  • Pay a huge amount of gold –she doesn’t have it.
  • Give up her Intelligent, Magic Orc-Fighting Sword – No! Never!
  • Give the Fey a powerful magic item the party owns – No, it’s not hers to give.

At this point my Fighter had another idea. She thought of something she could offer so that she would not be bound to do any evil deeds to pay off her debt, or involve the rest of the party in any evil actions. And she believed it wouldn't affect her abilities as a fighter–-much. She offered to give up her ability to speak for a year and a day.

She told the Clerics what she proposed. They agreed that it would probably work and made the offer to the Fay on her behalf. The offer was accepted.

A young cleric stepped forward and performed the simple ritual--runes written on her throat that quickly disappeared and a cow's horn that was handed to the Fey, which took it and departed. It was finished--her voice was silenced. She smiled at the clerics, bowed her thanks, and left the Temple.

My Fighter headed back to her friends, who were all gathered at their inn, talking about what the group should do next. She stoped in her room before joining them. When she came downstairs, she held out the letter she had written, and the Wizard took it. My Fighter gestured at the sheet and smiled. “Do you want me to read it out loud?” My Fighter nodded. The Wizard read, “Dear Friends, I want you all to know why I did what I did….I told the clerics I would give up my ability to speak, for a year and a day, in order to be freed from this debt. The offer was accepted.”

Everyone stared at her. “You really did this?” someone asked. My Fighter noded and grinned as she pulled a slate board and some chalk from her pouch and wrote: It seemed like a good idea at the time.

That sounds -so- much fun. And it all happened organically during the game? Wow. Kudos to you, your DM, and your group.
