Old newbie seeks advice/suggestions

I've listed myself as a newbie because I haven't played DnD in 10 years or so. Our campaigns fell apart when my brothers and I went to college and the kid down the road moved away. In those days we played AD&D2E. Since then, I did get the 3.5 handbooks and played a little in college.

Now the bug has hit me again and I really want to play. A lot has happened in my 10 year absence, and now programs like MapTools make it a cinch to play online with people and utilize 3D resources so you can visualize lines of sight, ranges, areas of effect, etc.

My question is this. I've been haunting this and other sites reading forums and trying to figure out the best way to find a group to play with. I have not yet purchased the 4e books yet, and when I glanced at them at Borders I was shocked at how different the game is. However, good old fashioned role-playing is at the core and that's what I want.

How did you get involved with VTs? And how would you recommend I proceed to get my feet wet again? Thanks in advance.

Aug 12, 2009 2:06:15 Are you sure that 4e is what you want? If when you pick up the books the reaction is shock, not glee, or curiosity, I do wonder if there are VTs in 3.5, or if they are all 4e, and if that would be what you want.

Familiarization with the rules (Whichever you pick) can't hurt the game!

I did download the trial version of 4e and am intrigued. To refine my question, how do you recommend going about learning how to play online?

Is there another thread or perhaps an article you could recommend?

Aug 15, 2009 22:48:56 If you've read the quickstart rules, my best suggestion would be to post in a forum where people post looking for player/looking for game notices. There happens to be one here. The best way to learn to play if you have the rules is to find a group that's willing to give you a little help along the way and just jump right in.
