Due to the town I live in there isn't much opportunity to play D&D. To put it bluntly I'm new to the game and am considering trying to play D&D over the internet.

Q1 - What sort of tools are there that allow me to do this?

Q2 - I've heard of Open RPG but are there any other similar tools and if so which do you reccomend?

To answer your first question there is a program called map tools that works well as a virtual table top, now actually finding a game online is a little trickier and I don't know how to tell you to accomplish it as I have yet to do so.

This community supports several PbP groups, including the Core Coliseum (a 4e and 3.5e arena for both PC vs PC and PC vs Monster combat), Real Adventures (a group with more traditional adventure-style games, featuring over 50 active adventures!).
