I havent been playing D&D for long but the majority of our party is level 2-3 and with some scouting we have found out we will soon be going up against a large deep dragon. there is 10 people in the party but it seems that we will be splitting up ( was not my idea ) and i was just wondering if there was anything we might be able to do to help plan to defeat this dragon. o and we one caster a wizard, but he was not able to get any spells higher then the level 1 spells. i have found the stats on it if anyone would like to know them. IMO its a little too much of a creature for us to go up against but we dont have much say in it cuz we werent the ones who made the campain. thank you for your help a head of time

list of classes and level

rogue -level 4
wizard - level 3
barbarian - level 3
monk - level 2
2 clerics -level 2
2 druids - level 2
2 rangers - level 2

Make sure the rogue gets in a sneak attack to start off the battle, then make sure he has flanking during as much of the battle as possible to get more sneak attacks. The druids cannot wildshape yet, so have them send in their animal companions. The druids, along with the clerics, should prepare some buffs (spells that help you, like Cure Light Wounds.) Have the rangers attack from a distance--maybe they should cover for the wizard. The barbarian and the monk should go up and beat the crap out of it while providing flanking for the rogue (so he can get more sneak attacks in.)

That should help.

This is where you are wrong.

You have a choice here, you can go and get killed, or you can just say screw this let's find something we can handle. (zombie outbreaks should be doable)

yea i asked why dont we just leave but i was out voted. also it seems the group leader aka the rogue made a deal with his guild to get rid of the dragon and they will come after us if we dont.

thank you Cowjuicer, ill pass that plan on to my party and see what they think about it. i think ill ask one of the druids to summon a swarm to go into his chamber so maybe i can get an idea what shape and or size the chamber is. that way were not running in there completely blind.

umm what kind of spells should the wizard take? since i heard the dragon has resistance to fire and acid 10 that kind gets rid of most spells. and would there be any benefit to use orb of electricity lesser on either the dragon or the gold pile the dragon might be on? since gold is conductive i thought it should give it a bonus of some kind either dmg or a negative to the dragons roll to resist it.

thank you for your help. and if theres anything else you might be able to help me with please post it here.

How was the wizard not able to get any spells above 1st level? You get 2 free spells added to your spellbook automatically with every wizard level, as soon as he hit level 3 he has level 2 spells available without even needing a pencil.

With those character levels, if your DM has any competence at using dragons, your characters are going to die if they fight it. I would risk the wrath of the rogue's guild, if it were my decision.

I would say that, depending on the size of the dragon of course, unless your DM fudges rolls, you're screwed.
a party of level 2 and 3's taking on a dragon and winning?
don't personally see that happening unless the dragon is played stupidly by the dm or rolls are fudged.

Although this is all dragon age dependant, I personally never make my pc's fight the youngest dragon class (wyrmling i believe?) as i just find it useless b/c dragons are (in general) the big bad thing in the monster world. so I want the pc's to be freaking out if they know there's a dragon about.
so I think the earliest i've thrown a dragon in the party was lvl 5 or 6 (there were... 5 or 6 of us i think) and i dont' remember th dragon age but it wasn't that powerful (in dragon terms) but the group barely escaped w/their lives.
made it a memorable encounter though.

Maybe if your party pools its money together, you can hire a Dragonslayer consultant/NPC to help with this task because at your level, it is extremely difficult to kill a Dragon. It also sounds like something is wrong with your Wizard if they are only doing first level spells. I personally would rather upset a Thief's Guild and not do the job then go after a Dragon at your level. If you feel you have to fight then have the Rogue do a sneak attack and then get the heck away from it. Have your Rangers pound the thing with arrows. Hopefully they have some good skills/feats with the bow and arrow and then have the Monk and Barb pound the heck out of it. The Druids should then send swarms, spells, etc at it while the Clerics are helping heal or anything else they can do to help. The Wizard should offer any protection that they can.

Does anyone have trapmaking? Set up some traps and lead the dragon into them with the rangers peggin him with arrows to get his attention. Make sure you use silk rope...

Tanglefoot Bag. Power Word: Pain (then run like hell). Grease, because the thing probably has crap for Balance and this will slow it a little and allow SA goodness without getting mauled. Anything that is a ranged touch attack and does something useful, starting with Ray of Enfeeblement so it doesn't gib you as easily.

Your group is still low level, it's not going to matter much if your group leader needs to be replaced by a level 1 character. With this in mind does the rogues guild know the names of everyone in the party? If they do not tell the rogue he is screwwed, shove a dirk in his throught and toss him someplace the rogues guild will find him. Problems all solved then.

Try this if the above doesn't work. Suggest that you guys become slightly more experienced , a.k.a get to about level 5. Then try the dragon.

Either that or it's time to find out who supports the group leader in his suicide run and who supports actually getting ready for the fight with the dragon. After you find this out, take a guard order and kill the rogue leader and everyone else who supports him.

I fear the dragon will kill you all in short order if you try to fight it with the intention of killing it.

But low-level characters can have a fun encounter sith a dragon and still survive, if they are clever.

In a recent game I played, we were all 2nd and 3rd level (kind of like your group) and we wanted to get into this underground dungeon, but a blue dragon was laired up in the ruins on the surface. We saw the signs, and were *very* worried. We even saw the dragon, and then ran off into various doors, towers and piles of rubble trying to get away from him. Most of us survived, and we got into the dungeon and eventually found another exit that didn't go past the dragon's lair. Just one guy, this brave-@ssed paladin, got caught in a long corridor and took the electric breath head-on and died.

The dragon was a great encounter, and it had us on the edge of our seats as we used hiding checks, listen checks and the like to try to sneak past it. But we didn't for a moment imagine that we could actually defeat it.

The only way you're going to kill this dragon is if the DM decides to make it easy on you.

Cheers, --- Wheldrake

Find the dragon beforehand the first time you can sneak away from the party, and make a pact with him to pull your punches if he promises to let you go. Making friends with a dragon > dead.

It sounds to me like you DM is not very experienced. He will either have to fudge dice or make the Dragon a cripled Wyrmling on Valium. You are going to be screwed otherwise. You need to run, or at least take some more adventures before you come back to it. All else fails the 4th level rogue should be much easier to take on.

It also sounds like your DM is nerfing your wizard. There is no reason to do this, IMO, but even with the spells he should have you would be toast in this battle. BTW, what kind of magic items do you have? At your party level you should have at most a few scattered +1 weapons and a couple of scrolls and potions. I don't have Dragon stats memorized but I thought you needed magic to damage them.

Your party is going to scatter once the DM calls for frightful presence rolls.

My advice to you is to 'fail' that check and run for the hills.

Then they are asking to go KIA. Your party is gun-ho and eager to get rich quick. A Large Deep Dragon is a CR 6-8 IIRC, and at least Juvenile in age. Played smartly, this thing will be a TPK. Frightful Presence alone will panic the entire party into fleeing, and it can just tail you with its fly speed and blast you from the air with a breath weapon every few rounds to whittle away at your HP.

The gold it sits on won't even affect play for your Orbs. No penalty to saves, no bonus to damage. The spell would specify if it did give such a bonus. You are better off convincing your party to forgo this folly than to try and take on the dragon.

Hey, Honk Honk here the tank of the party. By the split i think our dungeon mistress intends on placing.

Me: tank (level 3)
Sinper: Wizard (Level 3)
Rouge (Level 4)
one of the clerics and one ranger

Leaving the other ones to take out the remaining drow elves and giant spiders. I do not believe we have to kill the dragon, if i recall correctly we only promised the caravan of shadows that we would kill the spiders.

I pray to every god that will listen that we do not get the monk (as he cannot hit anything).

A question about the gold under the dragon. There are scarab drawings on the wall leading to the dragon, which one party member believes signifies a swarm hiding in the gold. Will they attack us if we do, in fact, foolishly try to slay the dragon?

And, for the trap idea, wouldn't the dragon hear us making said traps? or are they still dumb enough to fall for them? regardless, one problem we face is the potential inability to get out of the dungeon without the dragon getting us, as we will need to go right next to the stairs leading to it in order to get to any known exit.

o ok well yes the dm isnt experienced she played as a player before but not as a dm and its been a while. i looked up the stuff as well and the wizard thought that he could only get new spells by buying them so thats a no on the rolls for the orb check well i also heard its considered a baby, since the spider swarm that was sent out and found the dragon told the druid of the group that it was very small that its egg was still near by. so it was estimated no more then 5-7 years old. and the ranger has it in his head to try to befriend the thing. i dont know what our chances are but im going to try my hardest to try to get the heck out of there even if i have to leave by my self. and yes the rogue knows all our names.

If the scarabs mean what I think they do they won't bother you unless you try to steal the horde. Lair traps for the win.

Horde Scarab or something like that. If thats what they are they are really nasty. (basically they kill you in 1 round if they find any unprotected area of your body, wich means nothing covered by metal armor.)

They could be stopped by having a natural armor of +1 or higher, hence why the dragons are immune to them.

what do you mean by having a natural armor? because the wizard is a forest gnome so his skin is thicker and tougher then a normal persons skin does this mean they wouldnt be able to eat him?

Does he have natural armor when you calculate out his armor class? If he has this (even if its 1) it counts.

Well.. There's 10 of you. That counts for something. Most of you are very low level and will have trouble hitting it.

A group of my players is level 6 and has a lot of trouble with a single large, young dragon. If you HAVE to take it on, consider the following tactics:

1. Set-up an ambush. Use the high rogue to lure it into the ambush. (He has the best chance of survival)
2. Surprise it! Use a spell to keep it in it's place. Clerics (de)buff (bless/bane), minute lasting buff's should be cast first.
3. Charge in the flanks, rears. Team fighters and rogues. The sneak attack damage will be your friend. Anybody with a +2 or lower bab should consider using 2 weapons (20's for the win).

Something like that could work. Perhaps keep a man behind to drag the uncontious people away from the dragon. Perhaps use ropes.

i thank you guys for the ideas and help. ill post what happens when or if we attack it. i just hope that we might be able to get through with it not being as difficult as everyone says maybe the wizard can talk to it and distract it giving the tank and rogue enough time to get to where they should be for the fight or something
