| #1FLP_NDRoxMay 20, 2014 21:14:37 | I am running a paladin of Melora with a DM I like and trust. I would discuss this with him, but I want this to kinda be a surprise. He just gave my pally an ostensibly haunted sword that is really impressive but I think its going to be cursed and/or evil. It is haunted by an NPC she let die while fleeing an abberant creature. My pally is an unaligned Darwinian defender of life and nature, so that was a big screwup for her. Do I keep this sword until it causes my char to fall? Do I take it to the first LG temple and ask for cleanse/disposal? Or do I just use it for a couple quests first? What seems to be best for plot purposes/ most fun? |

| #4CCSMay 21, 2014 8:04:24 | Do whatever you want with the sword. Let the dm deal with it. After all, if he gave you a cursed/haunted/evil sword (or even just one that makes you suspect such)? Then he shouldn't be terribly surprised/disapointed by whatever action you take.... If he is.... |
| #5ChainsawhandMay 21, 2014 8:09:39 | The DM probably wants you to try and cleanse it, probably finding some means to atone for the earlier mistake and gain redemption, talk to him about it, sounds like good times. |
| #6BRJNMay 21, 2014 11:59:32 | Talk to the DM about the possible 'railroaded Fall' aspect. He shouldn't do that to anybody. But don't automatically meta-game yourself into a no-win box.
If the sword is haunted, how can you put the ghost to rest? Slay the aberrant in question with it? Cleanse a Tainted area nearby? There have to be some cool plot points to create / draw out. Some have you and the ghost as allies, some as opponents. Treat the sword as a Quest in itself.
Your paladin, to be true to herself, must 'make it right' between you and the ghost. You could keep the sword after that, or turn it over to a chapel to be honored / respected / remembered forever.
Treat the ghost in the sword as an NPC, with motives and ambitions of its own. That sounds like the most fun, long-view. |
| #7FLP_NDRoxMay 26, 2014 6:50:22 | UPDATE: My group had its next session, and the sword will be an important plot point. Now that I've seen the stats I can tell the sword is a cursed artifact who will turn on my character eventually. Thanks for giving me the confidence to let this play out. This is my first big campaign, and I think this will be cool to see what happens. |
