Oct 16, 2008 16:21:41 I want to be a master of masks in an upcoming campaign. However, I don't want to be a bard, and one of the requirements for the class is Performance (act) 8 ranks. Are there any feats that will train me in this skill? Or perhaps you have some base class suggestions?

Oct 16, 2008 20:38:31 That's a horrifically sub-optimal use of spellcasting potential. Your loss of 6 caster levels over 10 class levels puts a major crimp in your effectiveness as a spellcaster. Additionally, only one of the masks (the Archmage) has any real synergy with arcane casting classes. The +2 caster level from the Archmage mask helps offset the loss somewhat, but that boost only increases the effectiveness of your existing spells. You're still out spells per day and spells known.

You get the most synergy with rogue as your base class. The bulk of the masks work well with rogue class features, skills, or combat role. The ones that don't only serve to increase a rogue's effectiveness as a secondary/support caster.

I'm pretty certain that Beguiler from PHB2 also has the requisite class skills, and the skill points to meet the requisite ranks without taking too much away from other skills. In fact, I'll argue that the skill prereqs are right up the beguiler's alley... The Beguiler's fixed "know all the spells at each spell level" spell list makes up for the spells known issue. The social masks work well with this class, but again, the power of the masks doesn't really make up for the loss of caster levels - or the loss of top-tier spells. (I'm pretty sure that losing 6 caster levels means you'll never use 8th or 9th level spells.)

Anyhoo... if you're set on a caster as your base class, Beguiler is probably your best bet.
