Players' Perspective on Published Modules [No Spoilers]

I just wanted to have a thread where we can discuss various published modules from the players' perspective, without getting into specifics.  This would also be a good opportunity to get a thumbs up/down on any given published mod.

So far, I’ve been enjoying the Demon Queen’s Enclave.  Nice mix of roleplay & skill challenges, and a wide range of combat encounters as well.  Contrast that to Pyramid of Shadows, which my group and I found to be a total bore.

PoS featured a small number of high-hp beasties which, not only were they a grind to fight (I hit...I hit…I hit…I hit…OK, it’s bloodied) but the encounters drive the party’s wizard player starkers, since she couldn’t hit anything without nuking the rest of the party.  OTOH, what I like about DQE combats are the sheer number of opponents and varied terrain, allowing each of the party members to shine without causing “striker envy.”

I’m curious…what do players think about the next in the series after DQE, Assault on Nightwyrm Fortress, if memory serves?

I'm afraid I havent had any chance to play that particular series of moduals.

I have however played in the Seekers of the ashen crown Module.

My girlfriend ran it for us as few filler adventures while we progressed to the next part of her story.

It had great atmosphere, some solid NPC's, and some really well done, really interesting, really hard fights.

I'll agree that the "end boss" of H-1 (Keep on the Shadowfell) was utterly broken and KotS was a grind, but I'm having a blast so far with DQE.  It's like they learned their lessons from the earlier modules.

Having only played thru H-1, -3 I can only commont on them. They are poorly written and if the GM doesn't notice the fact that the treasure parcels do not equal the recomended treasure levels your really screwed.

All of WotC modules back to 3.x basicly suck.

The Sunless Citadel, Forge of Fury are amazing.  They are 3.0 and start an arc spanning 20 levels that ends with you fighting Ashardalon.  And, the seeds are set in place at level 1.

Check them out.

I first played Keep on the Shawdowfell back in 2008 when it came out, and it was great. That said I revisited it just to look back on our 4e roots and it has not aged well. The monsters suffer lke all MM1 monsters do, and the lack of skill is a big hole.

That said I think the story behind KotS is great and should be looked at for insperation.
I have recently picked up some old 3.5 pathfinders and some of the Pathfinder system adventure paths and they are great. The flavor can be jugded by the cover and there isn't one I wouldn't recomend.

Demon Queen's Enclave is one of the best published adventures by far.

I would avoid Assault on Nightwyrm Fortress unless you are confidant in your DM's ability to make it not suck hard.

It has lots of really aggravating monsters that make fights take forever and there are virtually no NPC's to interact with. A real step down from its predecessor.

Also, Revenge of the Giants. I love that one.

Agreed.  When we played KotS, it ended with a TPK.  Actually, scratch that, it ended with the survivors fleeing for their lives from that utterly broken end-boss.  So we ended up running what I refer to as Return to the Keep on the Shadowfell, when party members were much higher level.  We took on the undead horde released by the gate, and finally smoked that cleric of Orcus.

We were able to connect this to a "plot hook" in DQE by having the sage from KotS mistakenly believe that the portent about a new exarch of Orcus was Kalarel.

Demon Queen's Enclave is one of the best published adventures by far.

Good to know!  Any stand-outs from Dungeon e-zine?

i had fun with keep on the shadowfell, as DM i severly altered kalaral to a bastardised swordmage/wizard type, and cut out alot of the BS encounters but the thing it was missing was a flow chart of what your supposed to do as a DM (it was my first time) it would of been alot easier if they ever put in a chart that says "go to A pg 1-5, then B pg 6-10, then C pg 11-15" the descriptions were very hard to keep with.

My group played Keep on the Shadowfell and we are now in Thunderspire Labyrinth.  KOTS was okay but TL is really fun.  If you haven't played it yet you should check it out.

I'd recommend skipping Pyramid of Shadows for reasons already given...
