Ok, so I just joined a campaign at level 18th. What I am playing needs to be confidential :D but anyway, the DM pulls me aside, and says to me "can you kill this guy, he's gettin a little bit OP, and it would help me out"(thats the gist of it and this happened right before I came into the game)

so I say "ok, sure" I come in there, 1 shot the guy(legit) and the party has a WTF moment. 2 people quit i think, no one else is happy. And I for one didn't mind doing it. You know, im new, I wanted to do the little favor of the DM just to be a team player. So, the guy's dead, I explain the RP behind it(again, legit) and people are still POed. well im not gonna tell them why I am doing it, but whatever.

so, wtf am i supposed to do now? I came in to play, and i got to for about 5 minutes. Now i think the table don't want me there anymore. arg. halp

Either this is a joke topic, or you've just played your last game with that group.

My advice is to think before you do something. That includes making this topic, if it is indeed a joke topic. :whatsthis

This sounds a lot like a troll post, but on the off chance it's not:

Learn some subtlety. Pretend you're MKing in a MMO game. The key to avoiding having the wrath come down on you is to make it look like it was an accident rather than deliberate. It won't help for this incident, but for future reference, don't be so blatant with your assassinations.

How else did the DM expect them to react? You killed off a member of their team.

I'm surprised they didn't all get together and kill you back.

Horrible, horrible DMing. You should NEVER have one player kill another player for any reason, with very, very few exceptions (something like seppuku would be acceptable, I guess, since it's all honorable and stuff). Especially in that manner... with a new player coming in and just bowling the guy over.

Just out and out bad DMing. No other excuse. Any decent party would end the campaign right there.

Pretty stupid joke too.

Whatever happened to the days where the players plotted to rule a weak-willed DM?

In anycase if your are INDEED needing help, your pretty much shot. I'm the paranoid type though, and would assume the DM didn't want you in the game, and thus did the backstabbing job of recruiting you to do his dirty work got him. From what it seems, he did a good job from the sounds of it, and you go shouting he asked you to do it, who are they going to belive, the DM, or the new guy who killed a friend of theirs within five minutes of play?

Yeah, now I'm damn sure this is a joke topic. First off, any player that wanted to kill you, would, they wouldn't do non-lethal damage, second if they didn't want you there, you wouldn't BE there, assuming your at a player/dm house, one or the other would have kicked you out. Maybe not the DM since he seems to enjoy **** you guys around.

Also, as for what to tell the DM, laugh. Laugh hard. Tell him maybe on a different campagin, after you all get used to each other, so you can tell if the others can handle a backstabbing player, or PvP. Its only fair.

Because they're lawful good and don't see "an eye for an eye" as a legitimate method of justice? *shrug*

[edit]or maybe you were a troll ;) [/edit]

You're in a really bad spot, Zillah. (what's for all the exclamations calling me Captain Obvious). Here's my opinion:

You need to talk to the DM, in private. Talk, not e-mail or text or IM. Preferably in person, though on the phone works. Do not be accusatory or rude or any of that. You need to convince him to talk to the group, and explain that the assassination was his idea, not yours. These players are going to have a very hard time trusting you, if they even consider playing with you. The DM created the mess, so he needs to get you out of it.

My hunch? The DM didn't like the player's character and wanted it replaced; the player refused, and you presented a golden opportunity. In this scenario, I think you're screwed. If I'm wrong, there's a chance of working it out.

Huh.

Seems to me like the DM recruited you as a passive-aggressive attempt to use you as his tool, to Kill a PC, instead of just telling the player that the character is overpowered.

Then the party doing non-lethal damage?

and you're asking how do i fix it? how do I stay in a game where people hate me?

Come on. Many of us have played for decades, and I've never heard of anything like this happening, until now.

Something's really fishy here.

What really happened?

What really happened?

I asked to come in a few weeks before. Rolled my character. Came in. Character had regeneration. but not normal regen, fire did subdual still. Acid was the magic key word to do normal damage to me.

1 shot player. hilarity ensued. I mean, i don't know how else to explain it. and yes, you are correct. I got told the PC was OP. Well I haven't been playing for decades. I guess I shoulda handled it another way? I realize that now, not then. Thats why I posted this. to get opinions.

The DM is an idiot on many levels.

First, he advocated a Player vs. Player situation.
Second, you agreed to do this in a campaign you just joined. I can understand you thinking the DM had a "feel" for his players but at any point did you question your DM's sanity?

Possibly a Third, did the DM properly use ECL rules for letting you play a War Troll (at least this is the only troll I'm aware of that regens fire damage and only takes lethal from acid damage and still "looks" like a regular troll)? I don't recall the exact ECL but its in the high-teens before you can even start taking class levels.

If this was a serious post, I would out the DM. Tell them the DM told you. See if that changes the other player's opinions. At the very least then they can get ****** off at the DM and you instead of just you. If this causes you to give up the "reason" why you killed that PC, so be it. It doesn't look like you will be able to play in this game if you wanted to keep it a secret.

Well it seems like .. you and the DM are buddy buddy, and this other guy isn't qualified to stand up to you, and the DM, relationship wise.

Still, nothing is stopping that guy from rolling up a new PC. Unless the goal is to make him quit.

It was your Dm's call. And i think it was a bad one for him to ask you to do it.

I don't specifically think it was bad for you to carry it out. in effect, you're a DM's NPC, run by a player, on a mission to kill a PC. you just happen to be the guy playing that character, instead of the DM.

That being said, I can only wonder what would have happened if you had switched gears on your DM, and said Hey, I've been paid to assassinate you, friend. What are you willing to pay to get out of it?

But of course, it didn't go down that way.

Now that I think about it, I'm thinking that your DM has it in for that guy. I mean your character was targeting the other.

So really HE Should have just asked that player to bow out.

I was at first thinking that it was your fault for pulling the trigger. But in the end, you're playing a character in a game, so is the target, with the DM as judge. So no fault on you.

This is on your DM. It might cause friction, but if you are bent by this, let the group know it was with the DM's permission. If you can deal with it, and the negativity directed to you, then take the hit, and stay loyal to your DM friend. It's his game, again, and you were playing the assigned role, just as if you were handed a 1st level sorcerer, etc.

To be clear, while I find the actions of your character to be mercenary, there are many mercenary characters in D&D. This is on your DM for so ordering the "Hit."

He should in fact, man up and say, yes, "I ordered him as my NPC Troll to do it. There it is."

With that said if players leave, If I were part of that group, and though t that the player in question had tried his best, and still got slammed, then
I'd consider walking from that group.

A good question. I think i can see the angles, after considering it.

In that case, it was still a bad call for him to use you as his tool. You're an NPC, whether you realize it or not, once you agreed to the hit.

I just reread the stats on the War Troll in MMIII. That thing is strong. Add to that a few levels (i'm thinking you chose fighter or ranger, since you mentioned you "shot" the man down), and you got yourself a seriously overpowered character.

What level was the guy you were hired to kill? Race and class would be nice to know too, just to see how off balance this "encounter" was.

They have every right to be, and you have a bad DM. If he is POed at a player he needs to handle it OOC, not be sending in an outsider.

In effect here, the DM was cheating, and so were you. There's the "unspoken rule" "D&D is a game, and a Game is supposed to be Fun- thus the players will not put barriers up for letting in a new guy. Thereby, the "new Guy" will not screw over the party". See, the party, if it was "real life" would spend days and resources checking out any outsider that wanted to join. a Divination pretty well blows any cover ever made BTW. Or, the party might just say "Hey no thanks, we have enough guys, we can not trust outsiders and we are already splitting up the loot enuf ways in any case".

But players don;t do this- becuase of the "unspoken rule". Which you (and your DM) have now violated. So next time some guy wants to have some fun and join the party, they'll say "no thanks" and you/he has to sit there and watch. Yeah like that's fun.

If the character you killed was overpowered what does that make your character. Especially considering the rest of the party tryed to take you out and failed. It sounds to me like the dm wasn't all that worried about an overpowered pc.

Unfortunately it sounds like the dm didn't have the balls to do what he asked of you. As you said, you naively trusted the dm, now you're the one in the line of fire not the dm.

If everything went down as you related it there is no reason for you to go down with the ship. I'd make an effort to explain to the other players your side of the story including everything.

I would think at the very least one player has a problem with what the dm did. There is no reason for you to take the heat. Besides that you might want to play d&d with some or all of them in the future. It would be a shame if you were blackballed as a troublesome player without the whole story coming out.

yea it was but make note that they are 2 DIFFERENT campaigns. the questions I was asking in that thread had to do with something completely different then what I was talking about in this thread. the template stuff is for a campaign thats already over.

EDIT_ I completely agree with the part that sums up that I got used as a tool. You guys are right. No, I didn't mind doing it cause I didn't think about what would happen. my common sense left me for some reason.
And to be honest, I don't think my MoMF is overpowered. I took the right feats to be a melee fighter as a druid shifter.
Power attack, Leap attack, shock trooper+imp bullrush, the wartroll has a STR of like 31+4 for warshaping. 35 STR. warshaper lets me up the dice of the claw damage up by 1 increment.
now that I look back on it, I shoulda been a cave troll and got rend/rake with the normal attacks. but no matter. the regeneration was the part that made me not dead. this is legit, not "omg we can't kill him" they didn't know how.

You mentioned this party was high level (your target was an 18th level PC from some posts i've read above). You haven't yet detailed the classes of the other PCs, but I'll go on a limb and assume that at least ONE had to have ranks in Knowledge (Nature) or had dealt with "altered" trolls and other templated stuff in the past so as to explain yours PC's unnatural resilience to punishment.

If none of them attempted a single Knowledge check or had the previous experience or ranks , then i'm really surprised how they managed to get so high up in level.

Ah, so they where going off instinct instead of rolling for knowledge?

Also, you got screwed over. The DM took the chance and used you as a tool to kill off someone; probably he didn't want to have the blood on his hands.

Either the group will not trust you, or that will probably be you last game with them unless the DM says otherwise. I would've outright told them that "the D.M. asked me to kill (Player Name Here), so I thought I would, he is the DM after all."

Thought, I probably can't since I am the permanent D.M. for my group. Kinda contridicting. I make sure my P.C.'s aren't overpowered, and when they are, I ask them to see if they can fix some things; they most likely will. Otherwise, I balance it out a bit by adding in higher level creatures that still pose a challenge for the O.P. characters. If it is only one, I may pull him aside to see if he is willing to lose/balance some things out so that the campaign could be running smoothly with some challenge.

I have nevered asked a player to kill another player (PvP); though, players have asked me if they could kill X member, since the member wanted to reroll or the person wants to be an assassin. :surrender

Overall, I think you need to convince the DM to tell the P.C.'s that he told you to do it, or tell them that the DM asked you to do it. Otherwise, I don't think you'll have that friendly of a party.

I have a hard time believing this guy was worried about an overpowered player character, if he allowed a War Troll Warshaper in an ECL 18 game.

War Troll has 12 HD and a +6 LA. That means your character would be ECL 18 before class levels (not counting possible LA buyoff, which still should put you as lower level than other characters).

To get Warshaper, you need the ability to change forms, which would mean at least a level 5 Druid or about level 7 Wizard. Then there are the actual Warshaper levels to take.

So yeah...

But anyway, that is some humorously bad DMing.

Off topic: MoMF isn't overpowered... certain monsters that have been published after MM I are overpowered when put into context with Polymorph, Shapechange and MoMF. War Troll is high on that list of monsters that in my opinion, the designers never even considered the ramifications of in the context of spells and shapeshifting like abilities. :P

I don't know why people keep posting under the assumption he's a War Troll xxx and not a shapeshifter in the form of a War Troll as has been stated. MoMF 3 = monstrous humanoid. And some other level = Ex abilities like regeneration. War Troll = monstrous humanoid.

I hadn't thought about that point. So far, I was under the impression everyone had the same ECL, which really boggled me since it's very hard to 1-shot an 18th level PC, especially if this troll would be of lesser level thanks to LA.

I had asked my old DM about this situation because our group of friends see's each other every day. I explained to him the situation fully over the phone. the gist of the answer I got was that I shouldn't stress over it so much.

It's actually trivially easy to do so, even ignoring the obvious methods such as Save or Die spells. Certain mechanics make it incredibly easy (charge), others require more preciseness in build.

I could make a character capable of one shotting a raging barbarian (highest HP) at just about any level = to my character starting at 7 or 8. No charge, just a normal attack. Very high chance to go first too.

It involves Power Attack, Persisted Wraithstrike, Spell Storing, Bloodstone, Caustic Surge, and a few other miscellaneous effects that don't make much of a difference. At level 8 I believe I was toeing the line of 100 damage on a hit. Level 12, around 175. There are still several tricks I'm not using yet. Course, once the Shocking Grasp and Vampiric Touch are discharged, 'only' doing about 100 or so. Until refilled.

Level 8 barb = 57.5 HP + con mod * 8. He needs at least 20 to (maybe) survive one hit. 22 to be assured of it.

Same barb, at 12 = 83.5 HP + con mod * 12. Now he needs 28 Con to survive it. I take 1d6+10 damage in the process. Big deal, that is easily taken out of the temp HP buffer created by Vampiric Touch.

Indeed. The funny thing is because their thing is potential instead of innate, you could play one in a normal game without breaking it in half. Unlike say... a caster, which you have to actively try very hard to make suck.
