| #1sabre-scalariFeb 24, 2009 16:53:26 | I was wondering... I want to build a character who lost one arm and wields a Polearm..... Is there anything out there that will let me do that or would I have to build something. You should in theory be able to do it with a high enough dex to wield it, but I think that would take a feat and or a character build. So any Ideas? |

This immediately made me think of building a one legged character, and then giving him the "Deft Footwork" feat....it just does not seem right. Or maybe "Fast Runner"....no one would expect it!Perhaps you could have it somehow tied or mounted to the missing shoulder so he swings it around or uses it like a stilt using the Polearm vault or something. It would seem more logical to have a shield mounted there though..... |

You should in theory be able to do it with a high enough dex to wield it, but I think that would take a feat and or a character build. So any Ideas? How about ask your DM if you can just use a polearm normally (by the rules) but role-play that your character has only one arm. You're so good, though, at using one arm that you can do most things one-armed that require two. (Your choice, usualy, as to what you can't do. Like tie your shoes quickly.) If you have to hold onto your weapon while climbing a rope, maybe you balance it on your foot or something. I remember a thread a couple of years ago about running a blind swordsman (ala Zatoichi). The concensus was that you had to spend so many feats and money (for magical enhancements) to let you reproduce it that is wasn't worth it. But Zatoichi is really good. He doesn't have "blindfighting", he fights as if he weren't blind. (Think Daredevil, for example.) The best way to handle the "blindswordsman" is through role-play. Don't have him read signs. Don't use missile weapons except at close range. And if any munchking asks the DM "if his character can use a glaive one-handed, why can't mine", the DM should say patiently explain that your character is special, and can't use the glaive in any circumstance a two-handed person couldn't. (So, if your one arm was holding onto something else, you couldn't use your weapon.) |

| #8thegreatgalstaffFeb 28, 2009 9:56:33 | I say its just fluff, just say it and he has compensated for it with his years of training of wielding a type of polarm in one hand. Just like a blind man developing his other senses to compensate. Maybe a fake prosthetic arm to help you hold it or aim it should be fine if the DM does not buy the fluff argument. |
| #9rikijiFeb 28, 2009 14:44:51 | There's no real mechanism in 4E for restricting a character to only one arm, so it's reasonable to build up a fluff explanation why your character can pull it off. (Really, having your arm cut off at the shoulder is just fluff - it has no game effects). That aside, I've seen at least one homebrew feat that allowed for Polearm usage with one hand, but there's nothing official that would let you do it. |
| #10eikreFeb 28, 2009 19:21:10 | I think the only mechanical foundation on which to build the "Prosthetic Pole-Arm" is the Warforged embedded components feature... Which tells us that you "can" attach your two-handed weapon to both your hands, thereby electing a -2 penalty and forsaking the use of your digits for no benefit at all. That's stupid so let's not walk down that path. |
