| #1grail_questSep 02, 2008 16:36:09 | Just wondering where portraits for characters are most commonly gotten: Do you draw it yourself? Do you care if you have a picture on your character sheet? Do you just default to the miniature being used? |
| #2yamishinobiSep 02, 2008 17:02:30 | you just draw it yourself or describe in words, i lay an elf sorcerer, they always defualt to the dm's wobbly mialee fig, which i try to stay away from, (not even mine.) i see her as a pale 5 foot tall slender figure with long flowing perfectly kempt black hair, worn in a long braid or ponytail, or just loose, green eyes and tapered pointed ears, though the ears aren't as long as those of most elves, clad in cotton robes of lighter weight, usually blue, black, or grape, with long puffy sleeves, as well as a matching scarf, and padded boots, underneath her robe is a twighlight dusk mithral chain ring shirt that fits like a short loose dress, the padded boots if you feel upward reveal pants of the one color up on the list from the robe, black for blue, grape for black, and blue for grape. |
| #3navar100Sep 02, 2008 17:45:22 | Google for images. |
| #4viatosSep 02, 2008 20:57:39 | Google is good. Deviantart is better, and more likely to give you exactly what you want (iron half-dragon berserker) and not what everyone else inexplicably wanted (animal porn). As an example, look up Wen-M - this guy does just about the coolest avatars I've ever seen. Obviously Deviantart has copyright stuff, but as long as you give credit online or don't sell your printout offline, you're good to go. |
| #5skyodinSep 02, 2008 22:27:02 | I second Deviant Art. It is where my last DM got the art for his homebrew monsters and villains. |
| #6tyler_do-urdenSep 03, 2008 12:39:35 | i lay an elf sorcerer Good times. The best character sketch I ever did was a tracing. I posed for a photo and then traced over it, exaggerating the muscles slightly, softening certain facial features, sharpening the ears and omitting the hair. Guessing the location of your own scalp is a strange sensation. Lemme see if I can't find it... |
| #7hellmuteSep 03, 2008 16:14:23 | Only time I had one was when I found something online to look close to the character, then printed it in the area on the sheet. Otherwise the portrait area was used for other data. The portrait never really mattered as it was only for the player of the character, unless you were using a boxed set or module that included premade characters that had cards, or actual fold-up models to use. |

| #9rikijiSep 04, 2008 22:30:38 | I draw my own portraits. And my wife's portraits ... and sometimes portraits for the rest of the group if I'm feeling ambitious. I majored in art in college - it's nice to use my degree for something. ![]() |
| #10Mad_JackSep 06, 2008 2:49:13 | Google the Neverwinter Nights communities online - if you look, you can find tons of character portraits that people have done to import into their game. There's a ton of portraits that come with the game if you have it, and you can download more from the site, without even needing to own the game. I've found pics of Brad Pitt from the movie Troy done up as a water genasi, and images cropped from the covers of fantasy novels... Also, although it's somewhat limited, google Hero Machine and you can build your own picture by mixing and matching different elements such as armor and weapons. |

| #12saintkeeleonSep 06, 2008 10:02:05 | I always draw my own and everyone else's. When I am the DM I also do the monsters on my tiles. Drawing for everyone as a DM also helps me get an idea of what they have in mind for their characters. I have had fun checking out some of these websites as well. That hero maker thingie is pretty neat actually. I was getting a huge kick out of messing with it. That's a fun way to blow a few hours even if you don't have characters to make! |
| #13snoman321Sep 06, 2008 15:56:36 | I know it may offend the traditionalists, but I use screen shots from video games. The customizable nature of MMOs & RPGs allows the "portrait" to constantly evolve, and since I often like making D&D versions of characters I might play in electronic games, it fits naturally. Currently I really like to use Lord of the Rings Online to make halfling, dwarf, elf, and human character images. |
| #14tancreadSep 07, 2008 19:03:52 | For the campaign I am running for kids I have them use Heromachine. They do pretty well with it. It is pretty limited but for younger players it lets them do quite a lot of customization. |
| #15darkraven18599Sep 08, 2008 22:49:52 | I've got a pretty hefty stockpile of images socked away that I've collected over the years. About 15 years worth. Generally I troll through DeviantArt or Elfwood, ( http://www.elfwood.com/elfwood.pike ) to find images I think are nice. I've used them in the past as visual aids for players, as well as for PC portraits of my character. |
| #16grail_questSep 10, 2008 14:07:01 | Hi Everyone! I've started a gamer/writer resource website that links to portrait galleries. As Players, you can surf it to find a portrait for your character sheet, or find interesting-looking characters as PC inspirations. As Dungeon Masters, you can do the same. Since there are literally hundreds of portraits, you can use the galleries to find a picture for just about every NPC you have to describe. You don't have to always show a picture to your players, but having a picture handy will help you decide what to describe about the NPC when the PCcs encounter them. Everything is free to view, you're not charged anything or sold anything. Please have a look! -- http://www.fantasy-art-and-portraits.com (Please remember that the site is new and still under construction. Best to start with the Heroes of Might and Magic V area; if you are looking for "mundane" NPC type portraits, try the Tradewinds area.) |

Storns Art for tha' swipin' D&D Books PC Portraits online Pathfinder series (I subscribe to it anyway, so I might as well use all that beautiful artwork) D&D Insider - in theory, anyway. Haven't found any pictures there that I've actually used, but one or two that I've considered using. |
| #18Kurama_YoukoSep 15, 2008 8:36:22 | I just google the race im playing and usually find what I need. |
| #19vontravelleSep 15, 2008 12:05:18 | Has anyone tried digitalart.org I get a lot of my character portraits from here although it takes a while to get through the 4500+ images. |
| #20admcewenSep 15, 2008 15:36:05 | Deviant art is brilliant and if for some reason you can't find what you are looking for their are many artists who take commissions, which is what I have done. |
| #21saintkeeleonSep 15, 2008 23:16:39 | We are also trying to get an art contest started in the Community Art Forum. If anyone is interested in drawing or judging for that come on over and take a look at the thread, "Is there anyone out there?". We could use some more judges and many more artists. |
| #22snake1311Sep 16, 2008 9:05:31 | Grail_Quest, the Heroes V section is very impressive (I'm not keen on 3D images, and Tradewinds's lack of european faces isn't helpful :P). Have you thought of doing something similar with hero portraits from Heroes III ? |

Have you thought of doing something similar with hero portraits from Heroes III ? Hi Snake! Thank you for your feedback! :D I don't have Heroes III at the moment, and it's not sold anywhere nowadays. I might have to Torrent it as a last resort... but yes, I did want to at some point add those portraits. Have to get the game, OR those portraits, somehow first. Cheers, GQ |
| #24grail_questSep 18, 2008 9:42:59 | ![]() ![]() Hi Everyone! Since the last time I posted about Fantasy Art and Portraits, a section on Tradewinds 2 has been added! Tradewinds 2 is good for classic pirate pictures and 1700's Caribbean characters. Most of the characters are "non-heroic" looking, so these are probably best used for NPCs you need to describe or when your PC dons a disguise to go incognito. As a reminder: All images are copyrighted by their respective owners (DUH!). This screenshot is for private non-commercial use only (like, don't use it as the book cover of your magnum opus). They are screenshots from a game taken to introduce you to their art. Enjoy! |
| #25kletian999Sep 18, 2008 9:53:42 | I drew my own mimicing the style of Order of the Stick 1. Round Head overlapping a rectangle body (oval for female) 2. Arms and legs just lines (though later I added blocky armor over them) 3. Ovals for eyes, no nose, semi-circle or triangle for ears. The key sources of uniqueness are the hairstyle and body armor. |
| #26snake1311Sep 18, 2008 19:16:38 | http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes3/heroescastle.shtml The piccies are kind of small, but I don't think they'd look any better if they were much bigger anyway, considering the game's (dated by today's standards) graphics. Anyway, it's a great site if you're a fan of the series. Great job on the site, I've got it bookmarked ![]() The issue with drawing your own characters, is that the differences in art skills and even drawing style result in 4-5 pictures that yolu just woudn't really put next to each other - and I might just be overly ****, but that kind of bugs me (beyond the inital 10 minutes of excitement whilst everyone's drawing). Have you seen drawn together? That looks weird; and whilst it works for the show, it wouldn't help RPG immersion at all. |

Culturally, the art spans China to the Middle East, with the occasional portrait decidedly Caucasian, probably as a nod to European traders who had penetrated the region during the time period encompassed by the game. There is also a "romanticized" lens applied: Even supposed bums will be in clean, colourful clothes. As a reminder: This art is for private non-commercial use only. They are screenshots from a game taken to introduce you to their art, and therefore probably copyrighted up the wazoo. Enjoy! |

(1) Try http://community.imaginefx.com/fxpose/mshindo__kuumba_is_portfolio/default.aspx, http://www.mshindoiart.com/coppermine/, or the artist "Mshindo Kuumba" Small portfolio, but "Dynamo Azan" looks promising. Cheers! Grail Quest http://www.fantasy-art-and-portraits.com |
| #40dunaminOct 15, 2008 9:59:31 | (1) Thanks for the suggestions, though unfortunately I didn't find what I was looking for in the above sources. It would be very interesting to see your suggested representation via Titan Quest. To expand a little, the character is a black male wearing scale armor and wielding spear, with long hair in braids/dreads tied up behind him. I thought this picture was quite inspiring (suggested on another thread), though I didn't intend him to have face-painting and a predominantly shaved head. |
| #41grail_questOct 15, 2008 10:51:20 | ...It would be very interesting to see your suggested representation via Titan Quest. Hi! I threw together something using a skin mod and some basic gear. One of the big problems with Titan Quest is that the basic model is very inflexible. There's a lot done with skinning, but essentially the head, hairstyles, face, etcetera are limited to two choices: Male and Female. They are also hard to pose in-game due to the camera angle, and there isn't much "heroic" fidgeting in the character selection screen. What TQ is really good for is pseudo-Grecian/Roman gear and their collection of special unique items and sets. All very beautifully detailed. (And for a computer, game I don't really blame them for not having a lot of models because all that gear covers it up anyway.) ![]() Click for full-size image at Flickr. The art is redone and sharpened, and if you had a favourite hero from Heroes III, you will probably find them in Heroes IV as well. Lizardmen are no more. Of some curiosity are orcs that look like warthogs or water buffalo. Also, the use of caps are extensive and (maybe due to portrait size constraints) there's nary a pointy wizard cap to be found. | #52grail_questNov 05, 2008 13:29:09 | Wednesday Art Showcase Presents - The Fantasy Art of Heroes V Ever since Tolkien (was there fantasy before Tolkien?), orcs have been a mainstay of fantasy as a generic and conveniently not-human-enough adversary. Their biology has been variously cast as fallen elves, pig-men, and even a fungal lifeform that sprouts from spores (WH40K). Today's fantasy art showcases Orcs from Heroes of Might and Magic, where they are cast as backward and exploited half-human half-demon barbarians, with a basic sense of honour and spirituality. The half-human and unpredictable demon angle lets them be mirrored strongly off the Heroes 5 demon units, and yet retain a lot of variation and individuality. On the surface, the wide variation may seem to make the overall Stronghold faction a mishmash, but I think if you compare them with demons' Inferno faction, you'll see a "method to the madness". ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click image for full-size image at Flickr. | #68That_Blasted_SomoflangeDec 03, 2008 15:26:07 | Looks like he only does cartoon-style/comic-book-style (?) Well, technically it's me that does the poking around on RPG boards, not him, so I just decided to pimp his stuff because I frequent these boards. True his style is a cartoon style, but some people like that, others don't. That's why it's good to have options. Not everyone wants photo-realistic for their characters. |

I didn't mean to diss it or say it didn't belong here! I'm sorry if it came out that way. I meant that because it is comic-book-ish, if his stuff isn't shown to the HERO System crowd, it should be. I apologize if it came across the wrong way. |

I was just trying to say that my friend doesn't play any pen and paper RPG's so he doesn't know about the forums and that any forums I'm on I try to direct people to take a look at his work. If they like it, they like it, if they don't.. whatever. As long as people see it. So no harm, no foul. |

| #78ketDec 27, 2008 8:51:31 | Just wondering where portraits for characters are most commonly gotten: Do you draw it yourself? Do you care if you have a picture on your character sheet? Do you just default to the miniature being used? I stole a picture off the Internet and made some changes to it in MSPaint (I have zero artistic ability). You can definitely tell the changes I made, but overall it came out okay. It took some work to get it looking remotely decent and it's still obvious where I changed things because... Well because I suck. None the less, it works. I just stole one from the Internet and changed some features like the super-long ears and this stupid thing my character had on its head. |
| #79CrackerjakeDec 29, 2008 4:29:03 | What I did, like no less than fifteen minutes ago (when I finished), was go to hero machine, made a character that matched as closely as possible to what I wanted, got a piece of paper, a pencil, and sketched out and copied the character. I then altered it until I got what I wanted. I think it came out pretty good myself! I have no idea when I started, but I wasn't done until 5:30 in the morning |

I usually search google till I find a body dtyle and pose I like, use it as a "template" of sorts (om not goos at imagining people in certain poses and gettin the anatomy correct) then elaborate and vhange the outfit, wheight if i need to, hairstyle, facial features and mood of the pic. I doo all mine in pencil and finish with colored pencil. I'll get some posted soon as i get my camera back.![]() |
| #88kodiak3dJan 16, 2009 10:11:23 | Grail_Quest, I think the Succubus is the oldest, followed by the elf archer, the mage in the top pic, and the ranger at the bottom. For the ranger pic, I used a different program (Carrara) than the others (DAZ Studio). Carrara can do a lot more and I'm learning more about it. I'm in the process of updating my web sites. I haven't updated Kodiak3d.com in a long time. Most of the work on there is my early stuff and I have learned A LOT since then. |

Have you tried Renderosity or DeviantART for stock? I find Googling is quite a bit hit-and-miss if you have even half a concept in your mind and are looking for a fit.
