| #1death1942Mar 24, 2008 15:43:13 | there was a little....incident and now one of our party member is over 4000xp ahead of everyone else. this is a real pain as he needs to train at the most inconvenient times (we are 1/4 to 1/2 way through our levels and thus are staying in the wilderness away from any towns). anyone have a solution to this problem? |
| #2braithwaiteMar 24, 2008 15:52:21 | Item creation! |
| #3lsmftMar 24, 2008 16:04:55 | Point out to the DM that this is precisely why training rules shouldn't be used? |
| #4uamdbMar 24, 2008 17:06:05 | Point out to the DM that this is precisely why training rules shouldn't be used? You beat me to it. My comment was going to be, this is why I hate training rules. Also what levels are we talking about. Level 2-5 4000 is a large difference. level 16-20 4000 is not that much of a difference. |
| #5drmorganesMar 24, 2008 17:20:02 | If your DM is enforcing training rules, I don't think your associate can continue to gain XP until he trains. If you aren't headed back to town any time soon, this issue will self-correct in short order. |
| #6shaggy_shaggsMar 24, 2008 21:31:17 | Point out to the DM that this is precisely why training rules shouldn't be used? QFT. Also, this problem should self-correct whether or not the character's levelup is delayed by the need to train. Higher-level characters (above the levels 1-3 which are mashed together for some reason) earn less xp from the same encounter challenges, being bigger effectively slows growth which will allow the other characters to catch up. |
| #7death1942Mar 25, 2008 4:50:11 | its the 2-5 level gap and we do use training rules. however we naturally level up in our chosen class for the first 5 levels and i have found a trainer in my local area. |
| #8Merestil_HayeMar 25, 2008 15:16:44 | Firstly, a creature cannot accumulate more xp than they need to be one level above their current level. A second level character, for example, cannot have more than 5,999xp. Secondly, a higher level character gets less xp than a lower level one for overcoming the same challenge. This will tend to close the gap over time. It might pose short-term problems balancing encounters, but over time the problem will disappear. |
| #9death1942Mar 25, 2008 15:43:18 | ok thanks. the problem wont go away too soon (as i am a rogue and enjoy sneaking around on my own little adventures) but it should close the gap to a reasonable amount. |
| #10iserithMar 25, 2008 15:48:31 | Stop using the XP system and level as appropriate to the story. Once you get over the initial shock of discarding what seems like a cornerstone of D&D, you'll be glad you did. I think it takes away from the game more than it adds. |
| #11joshevaMar 25, 2008 16:13:22 | Item creation! Ooh, you beat me to it. So: Permanency: Creating yourself an illusory set of smoke-wings is too badass. Other, more practical buffs work too. |
| #12weab_dupMar 25, 2008 23:34:52 | so you've earned this xp doing a mission away from everyone else? Personally, I feel that the 4k xp should go to everyone then. You're a team, and you should be working as one. as a DM, if the character wanted to do a solo adventure worth 4k xp by himself at that low level, a few things would happen. 1. He'd die. it'd be an adventure meant for 4 people as normal, if someone wants to wander off, they get taught why its a team game. 2. Your other party members would be doing something else while you're doing this, and earn as much if not more xp as you. They stayed home while you roamed free gaining xp? not likely to me. |
| #13death1942Mar 26, 2008 15:52:28 | what happened was my party decided to train at a major town. i refused to follow as i saw it as the wrong decision and i thought i could do more staying in the village than moping about a city for 2 weeks. then i got wind of an orc attack from the forest and what followed was a bloody battle that i won (with some help from the town militia). that is how i ended up with an extra 5100xp. something as big as that wont happen again but there is some thievery to be done and that will no doubt draw some XP. i would give the party some XP but they were 4 days ride away and in the middle of their training when the attack took place. |
