Problems gaining rituals?

My group recently finished the Keep on the Shadowfell and has moved on to the Thunderspire adventure.

My problem is I cannot find anyone to learn rituals off of. Every town we go to I go to the temples, mages, etc, but all of them tell me their list of rituals they have and they aren't what I'm looking for (Last Sight Vision, Cure Disease, Speak with Dead).

I've complained quite a bit about this, but the DM acts as tho there's nothing that can be done, saying the NPC just don't have what I'm looking for. Having 'Ritual Caster' is a joke at this point.

Any suggestions?

Unless your DM is thick he probably has a reason why NPC's don't have the specific rituals you are asking about. I would ask him (rather than complain to him) about ways to acquire the rituals you are looking for before coming here and crabbing about it. Being nice (aka reasonable) to your DM works way better than complaining because I can tell you that if I had a player with your attitude I would tell them to go pound sand.

Remember there are other good rituals out there. The rituals you're looking for might not be available, but find ways to be creative with the rituals that are.

Thanks for the advice, but already did that. I spent literally hours roleplaying around the towns asking about rituals. I asked about rituals player-DM and was told there just wasn't anyone in the adventure who had what I was looking for, which BTW aren't that profound. Then I went to the next town and the next town only to be told the same thing.

I guess if you assume that I was talking about this happening in one session I can see how you read an 'attitude' into what I said.

What I was wondering is, is this normal in other campaigns? Has anyone else ran through these adventures with same or different results? Is anyone else getting the impression that clerics get screwed over by how few rituals there are?

I didn't DM Keep on the Shadowfell but I don't think there were many npcs that had rituals. DM may need to add some in. Probably should just treat it as a wishlist type thing. Have a list of the rituals you want and give it to the dm and they can add them in here and there for you to find.

No that's called c*ckblocking. Chances are your DM is inexperienced and afraid to step outside the module, or just a control freak. Back in the old days casters could research a spell if they failed to find one they wanted, but in more modern games it's just assumed that characters will find or buy the rituals they need. It's just not that big a deal, and not allowing a player who is actively looking for Cure Disease to buy it is just being an ass.

Your DM is being Il Duce. It is irrelevant what rituals various towns have or don't have as per the physical words written into the published modules. All rituals exist or don't exist in a particular location as per the DM. If you are continually looking around everywhere and not finding the rituals you want, then the DM doesn't want you to have them for whatever reason. I'm more inclined to believe he doesn't want you to have nice things so he can have all the power.

Ask your DM out of the game whether he wants those rituals to not be an option for his campaign, and if there's some actual reason you can't find them. Maybe for whatever reason he doesn't want those in the game at all, so it's pointless to ask (he should have told you that however).

If it isn't that he wants to ban those options, ask him how you could go about acquiring those rituals then if not buying them. Remind him you don't learn rituals for free like a Wizard would.

I don't have those adventure books but it's *possible* (highly unlikely I imagine though) that what NPCs sell is laid out in print. In that case he is just afraid to change things. He should not be.

For comparison: my DM generally sets me up with a contact that has the required rituals, unless there is a good reason why this particular group wouldn't have those rituals. We've been on an island with primitive tribes of orcs and beastmasters. I got 'raise dead', 'remove affliction' and 'beast growth' with ease from their shamans, but I've been looking for 'unseen servant' for 8 sessions now ;) I consider this more than reasonable.

Your DM has a reason (either good or wrong) to keep you away from these rituals. Ask him for that reason, and try to take away his concerns. If he wants to 'stick to the module', he is probably worried that certain rituals break the flow of information and ruin any 'surprises'. If so, agree to stay away from divination-like rituals until the module is over.

If you have recently finished KotS that would make your character around level 3-4 and both Cure Disease and Speak with Dead are level 6 rituals and you would be unable master let alone perform them. This may be why your DM is saying they are unavailable and he should have explained this to you. Try asking to buy Ritual Scrolls for these as they are not level dependant.

As to why he is not allowing Last Sight Vision (level 2) is anyones guess, but personally I allow my players to buy anything of their level or lower providing they are trying to get the item at a logical place. Anything of a higher level they put on a wish list and I consider the items in question and then put them in with treasure parcels.

I hope this helps you.

Are you even of high enough level to CAST these rituals (each ritual has a level, you have to be of the ritual's level or higher to be able to cast it, normally)? It could be that because you're not high enough level to cast them in the first place, that they "don't exist" in the world, which some DMs will do to make sure that players don't buy something that they can't even use, spending all their gold on something that isn't useful because they are unable to use it.

I'm assuming that you're running KotS with your characters at the appropriate level: that means that by the end, you should be levels 3-4, depending on how many people are in your party. So, Cure Disease and Speak with Dead are pointless for you to find, because they're to high level for you to cast outside of a scroll, as a DM, I would say that there is nobody there to teach you how to cast the ritual, because you'd be wasting your money.

Unfortunately, as a DM, I have seen many a time where players will literally go bankrupt in order to buy a high-level item, forgoing useful stuff they CAN use (like trail rations and sunrods, etc), causing them more harm than good.

Unless you're somehow at 6th level, the inability to find someone who has Cure Disease or Speak with Dead is irrelevant; you can't cast them.

As for any magical item, you should ask your DM as to the magical economy of the game. Some DMs run a "every village has a magic shop with a master enchanter that is (your level+2) that you can buy any magical item from; while other DMs run campaigns where they roll each merchant has a speicif number of magical items, limited by a predetermined total overall value that is governed by the size of the village/town/city they are in.

While the first method is "easier" for both the player and the DM, as you can get what you want/need no matter what, it doesn't make sense that a village 40 people has a +5 Sunsword lying around. The other method takes more time, but is a more realistic economy; and Cure Disease is a ritual that is worth 350 gold; using that method, a ritual "vendor" might have 7 level one rituals, instead of just one level 6 ritual.

Ask your DM about the economy; it might be that his economy will just not allow for stuff that is way above your level.

I agreee with Xaka. Remember, you can only master a ritual of your level or lower. This could be the reason for your DM not allowing you access to Speak with Dead or Cure Disease (both of which are 6th level rituals).

Xaka mentions Last Vision Sight (where is that one) is 2nd level, can't answer why the DM is allowing that one.

OF course one reason may be the idea of the wealth of an area. For example, I might not expect a small backwater village to have access to 10 level magic items.

Last Sight Vision is in Open Grave (pg50) and some DMs don't allow access to some/all splat books, this may also be something to ask your DM.

Most of the time DMs have reasons for not allowing splat books (ie reading through book x first to make sure it won't have anything over powered or broken). So in this situation better communication between DM and player is probably needed.

This actually brings up a great argument.... I think he's using the flat adventure and not expanding, so this ritual will NEVER occur in the campaign just because it's in a book that came out after the adventure did. So I'm curious how he would handle that.

I am aware I can't cast a ritual without being the appropriate level. In one town I went to a temple to learn rituals and was told the priestess could only teach Gentle Repose (duh), Discern Lies and Raise Dead. So, level really isn't in question here since I am not high enough level to Raise Dead, but it was mentioned.

We did KotS, but we also played the adventure in the DMG to get used to the rules and by the time we finished KotS we were fifth, so finding someone to teach a 6th level ritual in a world that is ritual deprived is not far fetching. I'm going to be 10th level before being able to find someone with a 2nd level ritual that I'd like to have at this rate...

BTW: Thanks to all for the comments/suggestions.

Being in a book the DM doesn't have I can understand him not allowing Last Vision of Sight. Maybe you should show him OPen Grave and the what the ritual does.

I know as a DM, I have been burned by players trying to sneak material in from books that I don't own and can't go back to look at.

As far as the other two, I can't explain that through my DM eyes.

Has your DM explained why not to allow them? And how experienced is the DM?

Actually, they are... however, they get a massive bonus to stealth, so I wouldn't be surprise if you missed it.

To the OP: ask the DM in an email/one on one why it is so hard to find the rituals you are looking for. The best answer for this is to ask YOUR DM as to why you haven't seen those rituals. The best the rest of us can do is just speculate.
