Question about Pseudodragon Familiar

May 05, 2008 16:33:53 Well, I have a lvl 7 Necromancer, and at level 7 I can take the Improved Familiar feat. This caught my eye, because I think a Pseudragon would be a lot more useful than my current Raven Familiar.

Only theres one problem..

I can't gain a Pseudodragon familiar in the traditional way through the feat, because only a Neutral Good character can take it (or a character with an alignment within one step of it) and my Necromancer is Lawful Neutral.

I talked to my DM about it, and he said the only solution he could think of was for me to get someone to cast a wish spell for me, and wish that my raven was a pseudodragon This would also be better, because I wouldnt have to waste a feat on it.

I've thought about it, and I was wondering if I wouldn't be able to do this because if i'm not Neutral good or within one step of neutral good, or, does that only apply if I was going to get the pseudodragon through the feat?

On the other hand, it might add an interesting story element to the campaign because of the similar, though different alignments.

May 05, 2008 16:51:54 Your DM is wrong. Hit it with Polymorph Any Object twice, and it becomes a permanent Psuedodragon. But why stop at Psuedodragon, when you can make it into a full-grown one with multiple castings?

I had originally thought of Polymorph. But in the spell description, it says specifically that it doesnt gain the extra abilities of the creature it turns into. That means no bonus to hide checks, no sensing when people are near, and no telepathic communication to anyone that speaks common or sylvan

May 05, 2008 17:38:12 Or you could happen upon a pseudodragon that is LN. "Always" doesn't mean 100%. If you like rocking the heavy RP, have it get to know your character and start shifting towards LN as they get acquainted.

thanks for the advice, that sounds like it could be a possibility. But would the Wish spell work? It would have the same personality of my raven familiar (which isnt much to begin with, but eh) And I wouldn't have to go through the trouble of finding one, as it says in the MM that " Only on rare occasions does a Pseudodragon seek humanoid companionship"

Atonement would work better than Wish. If you have the BoED, then you can use the redemption rules presented within to cause an alignment shift via Diplomacy.

Dec 13, 2010 0:37:51 Granted this post has long since lain dormant, but I found it. So, for anyone else who happens by, improved familiar says one step away on -each- alignment axis. Easier than the cleric alignment requirement, which frequently is assumed to be the format.
