questions about druids and elementals

May 01, 2012 19:52:43 i sorta remember reading over a variant class feature fro druids in one of the dnd books (but i cant remember what book) that states that instead of a druid getting an animal companion they can instead choose to have an elemental (starting as a small size and then growing bigger as the druid levels up).

im just wondering three things;

what book is it in

does it have to be the four basic elementals or can it be other elementals

is this variant rule actually worth the time and fun in doing it

any help with those would be a great blessing

May 03, 2012 4:37:10 What edition are you thinking of? In 4E there is a Sentinel Druid build in Heroes of the Elemental Chaos with an air elemental living zephyr companion, although I don't think it grows.

I'm afraid I can't help you if you're playing an earlier edition.

May 03, 2012 15:05:32 Its in complete mage. Its probably not worth it if you want a combat companion but a utility one it might be. Most of your buff spells probably won't work on it. I don't remember which types of elemental it works for but I wouldn't see it as unreasonable for a DM to let you use more types if you wanted.

May 03, 2012 16:10:40 By RAW, it works for all elementals, provided they meet the size requirements and have the air, earth, fire, or water type. It might not be RAI, though, so definately talk to your DM if you go for alternate routes. That said, standard air and earth elementals are great choices.
