| #1blinkkiteJul 23, 2009 9:08:02 | Hello All, I was wondering, I've always thought that prestige classes don't count for Multiclassing Penalties, but I can't find anywhere that says they dont. Can anybody clarify this with a source? |
| #2ZherogJul 23, 2009 9:13:02 | It was accidentally cut from the 3.5 DMG. To get that piece of data, you need to go to the FAQ.In the previous version of the D&D game, having levels in a prestige class never caused you to pay the experience penalty for being a multiclass character without uneven class levels. (The prestige class levels didn’t count when checking to see if you had a penalty.) The section on prestige classes in the new DMG no longer mentions that you don’t suffer an experience penalty for having levels in a prestige class. Is this a change or an error? Similar text might be in the Rules Compendium, but I don't have that source so I don't know. |

| #7jutterJul 24, 2009 2:06:37 | I believe it is mentioned in the Prestige Class chapter in the DMG. I had the same question when we started out with 3rd edition, and it was mentioned somewhere in my v3.5 DMG. Unfortunately, I don't have my books at hand, but this is the SRD's take on it:Prestige classes offer a new form of multiclassing. Unlike the basic classes, characters must meet Requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class. The rules for level advancement apply to this system, meaning the first step of advancement is always choosing a class. If a character does not meet the Requirements for a prestige class before that first step, that character cannot take the first level of that prestige class. Taking a prestige class does not incur the experience point penalties normally associated with multiclassing. Link |
