Jan 22, 2009 19:41:29 How do i apply the racial levels in the 'Drow of the Underdark' Book? I dont quite understand it.
This is what it says.

RACIAL CLASS FEATURES
The following features are gained by characters who take drow
racial levels that are integrated with a standard class.
Class Level
The Class Level column of the accompanying table indicates
whether a drow gains a standard class level at any given racial
level. Some racial levels provide a standard class level, some
racial levels provide a drow-specifi c ability, and some grant
both. Class levels grant all the benefi ts normally associated
with level advancement. This includes another Hit Die, other
class abilities, and improvement in base attack bonus, base
saves, and ability scores.

The Drow Racial Class
Racial Class
Level Level Abilities Gained
1st 1st Drow base traits, darkvision 60 ft., feat
2nd 1st Spell-like abilities, +2 Int, +2 Cha
3rd 2nd Darkvision 120 ft., immunities
4th 2nd Spell resistance
5th 3rd Feat
6th 4th Ability score increase
7th 5th —
8th 6th Feat
9th 7th —
10th 8th Ability score increase
11th 9th Feat
12th 10th —
13th 11th —
14th 12th Ability score increase, feat
15th 13th —
16th 14th —
17th 15th Feat
18th 16th Ability score increase
19th 17th —
20th 18th Feat

So does that mean i take my class levels as normal and at the correct numbered levels i gain the abilities that are listed at that level? I need some help with it, lol.

Jan 22, 2009 20:29:22 basically it allows players to play a drow at lower then normal levels. it's a concept introduced in the savage species book.

basically you gain "drow" levels before you can start gaining levels as a PC normally.

you start off as a 1st level in your class with basic abilities. when you gain your 2nd level of you don't gain HP/skills/bab/ect that comes with your class... basically you just got the first LA of drow. once you gain your 3rd level, you gain a 2nd level in your class so your HP/skills/bab/ect... all go up accordingly. 4th level you don't gain class abilities, but you gain the 2nd LA of the drow and the rest of the abilities.

from level 5 and on you just keep gaining class levels like normal.

so let's use a drow ranger for originality's sake.

level 1 - ranger 1
level 2 - ranger 1 / drow LA1
level 3 - ranger 2 / drow LA1
level 4 - ranger 2 / drow LA2
level 5 - ranger 3 / drow LA2
level 6 - ranger 4 / drow LA2
level 7 - ranger 5 / drow LA2
ect...

basically it slows down your class progression so you can play a drow at level 1+ instead of 3+

Ah, I'd almost forgot how simple and clear 3rd edition was ;)

heh. Savage Species ranks as one of my fav 3rd ed splatbooks and generally used as part of my "game bibles"... the books that i reference when starting up the games.

it requires a bit of tweaking, but i love that book.
