so in game i recently picked up some megaraptor eggs, when they hatch, can i use a handle animal check to rear the wild animal.  in the manual is says to rear a wild animal the dc is 15 +hd of animal, and im new to d&d so i dont know what the hd for something is, or how to calculate it.  Since it is a dinosaur and not an animal i add 5 to that DC.  I also dont know how rearing a wild animal check works, if it is a one time check, or a reoccuring one.  Anyone have experience in this and would be willing to help clarify?

3.5?  HD is hit dice.

Though this isn't the right forum for 3.5.

A dinosaur is an animal. For the rest of it, talk to your DM.

Keep in mind that it'll grow to something like 25 feet long by 10 feet tall and weigh in at around a ton. Feeding this thing is not going to be easy, and controling it if it decides it wants to eat someone or something you'd rather it didn't will be nearly impossible without extraordinary means.

useless fact: Megaraptor was not a 'raptor at all. It was a large theropod.

People need to stop saying that. This forum is not version-specific. This is a forum for players to bring thoughts/ideas/questions/problems.

Ok...

This is not the right forum for 3.5 rules questions.

Edit: Here's the one for monsters, and the one for skills.

If your DM allows, then yes.

in the manual is says to rear a wild animal the dc is 15 +hd of animal, and im new to d&d so i dont know what the hd for something is, or how to calculate it.

The HD (Hit Dice) for monsters are listed in a creature's entry near the top.  Megaraptors have 8 Hit Dice.

Since it is a dinosaur and not an animal i add 5 to that DC.

Dinosaurs are animals.  Note "the Size/Type" entry in the creature's description.  A megaraptor is of the animal type.

I also dont know how rearing a wild animal check works, if it is a one time check, or a reoccuring one.

.

This information is on pages 74-75 of the Player's Handbook, specifically under "Action".  Also note that if you fail to rear an animal you cannot try again.

I also suggest reading the whole skill a few times.  Controlling even one animal can be extremely tricky since you have to spend actions to command them.  And there's still the issue of how to feed such large, carnivorous creatures.

If you don't have a Player's Handbook, this information is in the SRD as well.

This is 3e. I'm sure there's magic items or training for both of those, and a dinosaur shouldn't be any different than any other large or huge size mount - and when those were offered in books, there weren't big sidebars about "OH THESE WILL BECOME ISSUES".

I mean, a DM can make it an issue, sure; but it's likely to be glossed over or ignored.

thanks fireclave and everyone else, it's mostly something i got to talk to my DM about, but he's new to DMing so he might rely on me to know the facts.  When we fought the megaraptor he told us dinosuars arent animals so it's good to know that the rear wild animal check will be easier, and i can use animal related spells on them.

Well, your DM wasn't entirely incorrect, gclaw. Back in 3.0e, dinosaurs weren't Animals: They were Beasts. Animals were fairly circumscribed in what they were, confined to animals that exist in the real-world today. Beasts were an intermediate class of fantastic animals that were not magical in the slightest: Dire animals, dinosaurs, Ice Age megafauna, and the like were all Beasts. 3.5e consolidated Animals and Beasts into one creature type, so as to maximize the utility of Handle Animal and the animal companions.

The only place I recall there being really good tools for animal training were in Arms & Equipment Guide, a 3.0 publication that had an entire chapter dedicated to exotic mounts and pets.
