my latest charater setup in 3.5 is a lvl 3 ranger /wizard, with a raven as a familiar [from the wizard portion of the character] my question is this:

at lvl. 4, can i also have a second follower creature [i cannot rember the term for it, but it falls under the ranger] as well?

Nope. The Beast Mastery class feature is available at level 1 instead of Archery or Two-Weapon. You can't get one later on without a lenient DM.

EmpactWB did not carefully read your post and made an assumption that you were talking about 4e.

You do in fact get an animal companion at 4th level of the ranger class.  But since you are multiclassing into wizard, you are going to have some levels in wizard.  You only progress through the abilities of a class when you take more levels in that class.

So, if you are currently 2 levels of ranger 1 level of wizard, from your ranger levels you would have favored enemy, track, wild empathy, and a combat style.  Form your wizard levels you would have summon familiar, scribe scroll, three 0 level spells per day and one 1st level spell per day+extra from ability mod.

If you are 2 levels wizard, 1 level ranger, you have favored enemy, track, wild empathy but not combat style.  And you get the wizards second level number of spells per day, four 0, two 1st level spells per day+ability modifier.

If you only took 1 level of wizard, the earliest you could have the animal companion from the ranger class is at level 5 if you take no other wizard levels.  Of course, then you only have a small number of wizard spells and if ranger or wizard is not the favored class for your race then you start taking a 20% xp penalty when they are 2 or more levels apart.

Sorry, I was thinking 4E. In my defense, I've been up for a couple of days.

Ton, thanks for the input.

You can have a familiar and an animal companion. You can even, with some variant class options, convert the familiar into an additional animal companion, granting the character 2 animal companions. I'm pretty sure you can only have one familiar at a time, tho.  And I don't think there is any way to combine a familiar and an animal companion into one (in case you were wondering).

Hope this helps.

In 4e I created the crazy cat lady. The extant build has an animal companion (cougar), a familiar (cat), and a cat spirit, that all hang around full-time; plus some ordinary cats that are pretty much useless in a fight and the ability to summon more cat spirits and cat-like things and then transform into a cat herself. (With the proposed changes for when I get access to the Primal Power stuff, she'll be able to transform into a swarm of cats.)

It would be very hard to convince me that 3.5 is less capable of such silliness.
