i was reading up on readying an action, and i'm a bit confused.    when u ready a weapon on a charge, u do x2 dmg for that weapon against the enemy.   now does ur atk roll go before or after the charge!?

cuz i was hoping to have a situation where my char would stand there all casual, and when a pesky little kobold or drow would make a charge, miss me, then i would take my scythe with one hand (the hilt being on the ground being the pivet point) and SMACK that drow!  maybe there's a feat out there for that. or maybe i'm just complicating myself on such things :P

Assuming 3e.

You ready an action to attack the charging foe; he moves into the adjacent square, then you attack him.  If successful, you get the extra damage if you are using a weapon that has the property that it can be set against a charge.  If the foe survives your attack, he completes his charge and attacks you.

but when do u say ur readying a weap.?      say A is charging at B,  but B's initiative is later on. does B mention while A's about charge that he's readying his weapon? so that in turn moves his initiative up for that encounter...... am i right?  haha

No.

On your turn, you ready an action, declaring a trigger and what you will do as a result of that trigger being fulfilled ("When someone charges me, I'll set my spear against the charge.")  You then wait until that trigger either occurs, or you decide you no longer wish to wait for it to happen.  If the trigger action occurs, your initiative will then be set to just before the person who set it off.

thats one of the points of losing initiative for that battle, if A had better initiative then B, than B didnt think fast enough to act before A decided to charge at him, you dont get to make the decision to ready the action until your turn, now possibly you can finagle a scenario with your DM that would let you always have that action ready for your first round of combat ( you travel the swamps well aware of the charging beasts that dwell within, you travel prepared for this at all signs of danger, this action is readied automatically as your first round in combat) of course you could see the down fall of this, if you get attacked by an enemy who isnt going to charge at you then youve wasted your first round
