I was given a Pregen of a thief last saturday and got a ring of shapechanging.

From what I understand, the ring has a 2% chance of making new forms permanent. Which leads me to the question.. If say I shapechanged into a crystal golem, (as we were fighting them.) and it didn't go permanent, later on I decide to pull the same shapechance again, will I have to roll to see if it was permanent?

It says each new form, and since the Golem is no longer new to me, I'd expect it not to have to roll anymore.

I'm also curious on how it effects the character, as the spells discription is painfully obscure.

It's from 2e? I'd say the phrase "new form" means the form you have changed into. If you want clarification, though, go to www.dragonsfoot.org and look for the 2e forum. If you're playing 2e and older, they also have gobs of free adventures, too.

I always ruled it was a 2% chance everytime except for returning to normal. (unless your base form was polymorphed, in that case roll and pray for the 2%).
