Seeking Advice (Avenger class)

Jan 14, 2011 11:10:48 I play an Avenger in a group and one of the other players is always on my case about my PC being "broken." His rationale is that since the Avenger rolls 2d20 to hit his Oath that the class is "broken" and lame. He calls my character stupid and always argues that my guy is "the cheese."

I tried to explain to the guy that most strikers get extra damage dice when they hit their quarry, curse etc. and the Avenger does not. The Avenger compensates for this by hitting more often or as this other player claims "all the time."

Can anyone give me another argument to try and shut this guy up? Frustration is setting in...

Basically, no. People of this... type... won't be shut up by your arguments, so just don't enter into with him. Have the DM tell him to cool his jets about it, that's about it.

If you must: a re-roll is statistically comparable to a +5 to attack rolls. Understand where the guy is coming from: it is a pretty big boost in terms of to-hit, it applies uniformly to all your power usage, and players have a tendency to notice hit/miss considerably more than low/high damage. But you have the right of it: it's intended to make up for your lack of a "striker damage bonus." Avengers are certainly NOT the top of the heap when it comes to striker damage. My guess is that he's just seeing a lot of hitting for solid damage, while his hit rates are much more swingy but land bigger numbers, and you won't really be able to sway this perception.

Aside from simply recording the results of every roll you two make during the course of a battle and totaling the numbers. (Do NOT do this.)

There's also the passive-aggressive approach, which is just to say something like "Fine. What should I play, since obviously the entire game revolves around you and we need your approval to pick our noses, much less play a character. What is thy bidding, my master?"

Jan 14, 2011 15:29:53 Avengers are the most accurate class. Nothing unbalanced about that. As you said, they don't get any extra damage die. Tell him to get over himself, perhaps not in those words.

What class is the other guy playing?
Unless the guy has at the very least a good working familiarity with the mechanics of all the classes in the game, the types of characters he's played will have colored his perceptions.

Jan 15, 2011 1:45:13 I advise telling him to keep his words civil or keep them to himself. It is not his character, and by any reasonable metric, Avengers are not broken.
