Jul 04, 2008 20:09:16 I just got the 4E books and I'm completely new to DnD. I generally get most of the things dealing with character progression except for skills. Can I only use the skills my class uses? When can I train new skills since it doesn't say anything about adding skills on the leveling chart. I might just be missing something in the book but I'm just a bit lost on the skill stuff at the moment. Thanks for your help

Jul 04, 2008 20:25:04 You can attempt to use any skill, regardless of its status as a class skill or a skill you're trained in, though a couple of skills do have uses that can only be attempted if you are trained in that skill.

Skill Training is a feat that, well, gets you trained in a new skill.

Jul 04, 2008 21:30:50 The class skill list simply shows which skills you can choose to be trained in with the number of skills your class allows for. IE, a wizard starts trained in Arcana and in three others of his choice from his class skill list.

This in no way prevents him from using any skill, whether it's on his class list or not - it's simply a question of which ones he starts out being trained in (and thus getting the +5 bonus for being trained when using them).

In addition to the Skill Training feat, which gives you training in any skill of your choice (and it does not need to be on your class skill list), there are a few other ways of gaining additional trained skills. The multiclassing feats give you training in one additional skill, depending on the specific feat. Also, some races grant training with an extra skill: Humans get one additional trained skill from their class skill list, while Eladrin get one additional trained skill which may be anything.

Jul 08, 2008 13:36:41 Every class has a certain number of class skills. According to your class and race, you may choose to make a certain number of these class skills "trained." Any class skill that is trained has a +5 skill bonus to it.

Skill List: A list of all skills that can be used by players.

Class Skill: A list of skills that are related to the class you have chosen. When you are choosing which skills to make "trained," this is the pool you pick from.

Trained Skills: These skills have a +5 bonus to rolls made to use them.
