Small man syndrome

So we are playing a pre-made module and i'm feeling a bit small. I am a level 1 ranger leveling up to level 2 now. Im also doing a huge amount of damage because my fav enemy1 is goblinoid, and this is a goblin dungeon crawl. This is all fun and good and i love it because im taking out all of them. I am playing everything as I hate them and they all must die, even the ones who are giving up. Im also a gnome. Im a young punk who likes to joke around alot. I ad alot of great/funny RP moments with the npc's that we come across

Oh im also the only skill player, no rogue in this dungeon crawl.... oh wait or even a cleric.... wait what kinda 5 player dungeon crawl is this... any who.

Now the thing that makes me feel kinda small, other than being a gnome, is that anything that we find is med build, so when we come across the +1 studded leather that no one else would use the dm, and the other 2 players who also dm, say it wouldn't work on me b/c im small.

What do you guys do about this? Im dealing over half of the damage and kills to the goblinoids that are all down there, and i dont get any armor/weaps that would like to use, not even the +1 composite longbow

Any ideas of what to say to the dm to maybe help a little man out?

Well first off the longbow shouldn't be a challange

As a small character a +1 composite shortbow for a medium character is equivilent to a +1 composite longbow for you.

As such just wack a goblin with a +1 composite short bow.

As to the armor, some say magical items resize themselves. Others say they don't. Thats a DM call.

But if it is really bugging you, just chat with the dm. If you can't resolve it through chatting to the dm then thats where things become a bit more difficult, and you have to start waying up, whether the dm is holding items back from you because you are dealing so much more damage than the others, and he wants the others to get a look in on the combat at some point.

yeah, i guess the main thing that bugs me would be stuff like the +1 studded leather that no one else would use. its just going to get sold. and since the dm already said i cant use it im sure not really sure what to say to him about it.

Surely in a goblin dungeon, there would be at least a bit of nice small-sized loot?

Just tell the DM you are concerned about not finding enough loot that is usable, and that things like the studded armor go to waste.

It may be that because you are so effective, he is holding off giving you loot which would further boost you. And just because you kill the most things doesn't mean you are entitled to treasure more than other PCs of course.

Yeah i figured there would be some small size gear also but were not finding anything. And yeah it would make since to not make me even more of a killer i suppose but seeing gear that i would love to use go to waist sucks. I guess i can talk to him about it and see what he says.

Tell your DM that when you go back to town, you want to set up for and get a set of magical armor made for your size, or go to a gnome area where such armor could be sold or made for you.

It gives him an idea for an adventure, if he is worth a damn as a DM.

"Quest for the Gnomish Armor."

Good luck.

"Quest for the Gnomish Armor."

YAY!!! A quest centered around me!!!

Yeah actually i talked to my DM a little while ago and he told me not to worry, some of the best loot in this dungeon is for small size.

Gotta talk to the DM.

Seems like it should be the other wayaround. Goblins are considered small right? Why are they hoarding a bunch of medium sized crap they can't use? Wouldn't you find a +1 leather tunic on a goblin that's size small?

You get your share of the loot; if it fits or not. Sell off what doesn't fit or you don't want and buy some stuff you can use.

Well, first talk to the DM about your concerns. Particularly direct him to page 213, Size and Magic Items in the Dungeon Master's Guide

-Monsters with armor, gear and weapons should be using them, and thus those items would be sized for them. A large monster would be wearing large armor/weapon, a medium monster with medium armor/weapon and a small monster with small armor/weapons. Goblins are small so weapons and armor found on them should be small. This applies to items that the monsters are using of course, but a goblin patrol wouldn't bother carrying around equipment that they can't use so likely they will be using any gear they have. Treasure hoards could hold anything though.

-Gear in treasure hoards, that is stuff found that isn't being used by some creature, should follow the book's outline in a party where there are size variations (30% chance of being small, 60% chance of being medium and 10% chance of the DM's choice)

-Weapon size conversion. A Medium Light weapon becomes a small One-Handed Weapon and a Medium One Handed Weapon becomes a Small two-Handed Weapon, you can still use them however you would convert them one size up light--->1-handed--->2-handed. Though a penelty is applied. However the DM should refer to page 27 of the DMG for Weapon Equivalencies as a much more effective way of converting weapons over from one size to another realistically.

Medium Small
Battleaxe: Greataxe
Club: Greatclub
Dagger: ShortSword
Dart: Shortspear
Flail, Light: Flail, Heavy
Handaxe: Battleaxe
Longsword: Greatsword
Light Mace: Heavy Mace
Short Spear: Spear
Short Sword: LongSword
Shortbow: Longbow

So we weren't fighting only goblins but also hobgoblins and those are med creatures? And those are the ones who had the items i was interested in.

HobGoblins are medium creatures, and it would be thus expected that they were using medium armor and weapons.

But Hobgoblin standard gear, includes a Medium Longsword, which you should be able to use as a Small Greatsword using the variant rules in the DMG.

Though if the Hobgoblins had additional gear that they weren't using, such as a treasure store of looted items from raids, then the DM should refer to the rules on page 213 and consider determining random size for that loot.

my group plays with a suspension of disbelief rule for magic armor. meaning size, gender and body type don't effect if you can use it (within reason ex- a halfling can not wear a giants +1 full plate but could wear a humans.) normally we are a very realistic group, I force the characters to take the weight of their coins into account and strictly regulate how much food they have and keep track of where different item are stored on their person. However it is just far to annoying for a player to find a +3 full plate on the orc champion only to realize they cant use it because they are a a different gender that the original user of a different size (dwarves and orcs would use different armor even though they are both medium.)

This is pretty well what the DMG suggests for magic items. I generally play that armors can be resized and adjusted with little difficulty for the most part. adjust some straps, etc.

The enchant magic item ritual is the answer to your problem. You can use it to resize armor to fit different sizes. Just look it up.

Being of Small size is a disadvantage. And the only racial disadvantage in the game, to boot.

You're the one who chose to play a small character (you had the option to not) and now you're feeling the disadvantage of it. Choices have consequences.

Now that you have played the character for a while, do you feel that the positive aspects of being a Gnome outweigh the Small size disadvantage?

There is another disadvantage in the game, but it counters itself. Dwarves having a speed of 5, but then they aren't affected by heavy armor (so no love lost).

Small has no benefits just penalties. No natural bonuses to stealth, ac, or reflex like prior editions. Maybe we'll get a small creature book (pocket size), just with feats and bonuses for the wee ones, to make small look more like a class feature, and less like a punishment.

--Though I do have players that would be all for punishing halflings in any way possible.

So we finished the module and no good stuff for small size people. He said there would be some but that was his continuing adventure that this module sprang into.

This is pretty well what the DMG suggests for magic items. I generally play that armors can be resized and adjusted with little difficulty for the most part. adjust some straps, etc.

Where exactly in the dmg is this located?? That would be awesome point to bring up to the DM

+1 ac for small size, +1 to attack rolls, +4 to hide bonus.... thats just kinda cool to me... Yeah u get smaller damage die but there are fun RPing aspects to it.

I think we're confused on editions. The "favored enemy" bit on the ranger sorta tipped me off that it's 3.x. Really, I say it's a good idea to read what you're replying to.

I'm reminded of Quickbeam the ent, who replied "yes" before an elder ent had gotten halfway through his question. Good times.

Nightwalker450 thought you were talking about 4E, I believe. Small size characters in that edition really do get no real benefits.
