So, I've played DnD a few times before; Still fairly new.  Because my last group fell apart, I started a new one and managed to get 6 total players (huzzah)...

I've always been in the smashy smash role of pretty solidly varied parties, as in everyone in the party has a distinct role; Caster, smashy, sneaky... Except for Brad, the guy who gets us all killed every game, in horrible ways..

For the first time, I'm trying a a wizard - I've not done too bad in building him, starting level 2..  With Precocious Apprentice and Fiery Burst, I've gotten around the whole 'spell per day' drawback.

But I'm looking for more awesome tricks, cheap-ass tactics and generally awesome ways to play a wizard. =]  Any assistance is appreciated.

Look for spells with effects that amount to 'save or die' 'save or lose' or 'save or screwed'.  Crank your save DC as high as you can, any way you can.

It really depends on what you want to do with your wizard.  There are so many different types of spells that you can do almost anything.  Did you want to be more of a blaster, a support caster, a sniper, control a hoard of summoned minions, a frontline fighter, etc.?  You might want to pick up the Complete Mage book, its got pretty good recommendations for spells, feats, etc for the different general builds.  And yeah, the Char Op boards are a pretty good place to find tips on some really cheap tricks.

I'd really recommend picking up the complete arcane and the complete mage books, there's some really good stuff in there. And if your DM will allow it, the Spell COmpendium, it has ALOT of new spells for all classes, including wizards.

I'd also recommend picking up force type spells when you can and some sonic for when you just want damage, since as far as I know no creatures have resistance or immunity to force type (might be some exceptions) and sonic resistance seems fairly rare. And always read the FULL spell description and find creative ways to use them.

But yes, what kind of wizard do you want to play? And any particular flavour? (Fire orientated? Necromancer? Maybe he favors abjuration spells?)

One spell I really can recommend if you have a winged familiar of some sort is bestow curse (and later it's greater version), it can work in several ways, but my personal favorite is just straight up CON drain. But make sure to either use the Mage's Hand spell (creates a small hand that floats around that you can use to deliver touch spells) or your familiar since it's a touch spell, wizards in melee range = bad.

And if you're the type that likes to do big area damage, consider the improved initative feat, some people might argue against it, but castinga  fireball really is much nicer if you manage to go before everyone else. :p
