So many character ideas, so few games...

Aug 11, 2009 7:23:31 I play in two games, one 4th, one 3.5 ebberon. The 4th game has been running approx every other week since about christmas, and we've just reached the end of KotS.

My problem is since i got the PHB2 saw bards were pretty cool, I've wanted to play one, well the DM was running the first module with a PHB, DMG, MM (1) only policy, til he and we got used to the system. So i thought cool, I'll roll a Bard for the next module then. I've looked forward to it but now the time has come I'm not so keen.

I've grown attached to my little stabby halfling rogue. He's fun to play, good at what he does, and has just got a spanky new dagger, that will make him really good at what he does.
Further the party setup doesn't look great for a bard. We've two defenders and a leader already (and another striker). I think a setup of DDLLS is gonna make pretty slow (but safe) progress.

So the temptation is to keep plaing Orin, the cocky, stupid, bold, but dangerously efficient halfling. But that leaves my bardic ambitions on the back burner for the time being (and at 8 months a module possibly for a long time).

I've also hit a similar note in the 3.5 game. Recently my changling beguiler, was petrified, so anticipating him not making his saves, I started to plan my next character, a talenta halfling druid. Which fit the story line as we were just about to set out in to talenta. But i made my save. Part of me was happy to keep my schitzophrenic changling, but part of me was gutted I didn't get to make my dinosaur riding halfling.

I DM another game, which lets me flex my character muscles a little, but not to go in depth the way you can playing a charater for a long time. It does mean i don't really have time to join another game though.

So how do you play all the characters you want? How many do you go through? We have a low death rate in our games (but lots of close calls, my halfling came down to his last death saving throw with no healing surges left during the last encounter of KotS), so much so I havn't had a character killed yet, in three years. I don't want them to die, but do want to play something new!

Aug 11, 2009 8:02:48 Easiest way - just ask you DM. I played an elf druid from levels 1-5, and when we reached level 6, I asked him if I could change my character just because I wanted to try something new. Of course, that probably won't work if you want to try out 3-4 different characters. For that, you'd probably want multiple games.

Aug 12, 2009 7:07:08 That's it, I know my DM would quite happily allow me to change charaters (at a sensible point). In fact one of our players has done just that. BUt my problem is that while I want to try out new things (like my bard, and druid) I don't want to leave behind the guys i already have. If they came to the end of their story and moved on then I'd move straight onto a new guy, but as it is they are still there, and fit into the story.

With a low death rate and only a couple of slow moving games going on at a time, I sometimes wonder if ever I'll play a new guy.

I have a whole portfolio of characters I want to try. At least one each of 75% of the published classes, and several classes have up to a half-dozen concepts.

Since I can barely fit the tabletop game I DO participate into my schedule, I try and find games I can play online to try out some of the others.

Aug 13, 2009 13:09:46 I've got the DDI Character Builder, and after creating pretty much most of the classes available (including monk and psion)...... it's a wonder I'm still playing a Fighter, and a Cleric.

Aug 14, 2009 5:14:06 Glad to know I'm not alone at least!

I might try and start a delve night, mix up my two play groups, share the DMing, and have some less "campain" style play, letting people try out new characters. Give others a chance to DM and get to play loads of different characters.

Aug 17, 2009 0:13:01 I know how you feel. I have half a notebook of character write-ups that I want to play.

Most of them are on-hold until I can get a group together to play them. A couple of them I'm using in D&D Solitaire (which I really like because I can find my flaws with character building easier). ^^

Aug 17, 2009 7:23:31 For people who want to play more characters, I 'd recommend participating in the RPGA.

You can always start up a 1st-level character to test out some concepts, if you feel like it.
