So my DM has rendered powers useless...

What do you do when you use a power, (say one that allows you to attack the monster that just hit you as an immediate reaction, or one that when you are hit damages all enemies in a burst.) and suddenly the bad guys won't hit you and then bam you have a useless power(s).

I've spoken to my DM about this and his response is well they've heard of you and know what you can do.  So my rebuttle becomes, well this type of monster has exsisted for milenia do I know what it can do without a role?  It then becomes a stand off...  What's a player to do?

Two ways of looking at it ...

1. Your GM is impairing the monsters.  They would very likely be better served attacking you and eating the reaction than avoiding you.  You have free run of the battlefield, and nobody is going to touch you.  Really ... your GM just made you darn near indestructible.  Prance around saying 'Heeeey batter-batter HEEEEEEEY batter-batter SWING' and execute your battle plan without interference.

2. Just retrain the power next level.

You know.... I never looked at it like that.  #1 that is.... thank you.  This next session I may just have to try that.

I was in a similar situation once, and my DM fed me that same line.  It was the only time in my life I ever got to say, "Check it out ... the big scawy dwagon is afraid to attack me!"

He did, then, let me have it right in the chops, and I certainly deserved it.

I agree with Salla.

However, this is precisely what those kinds of powers are for. Similar to Defender abilities to punish movement away or attacking allies, these are abilities (usually on Strikers or Controllers) that punish monsters for attacking your PC. The DM needs to weigh up the pros and cons of making attacks on the character, not just blanket avoid damage to the monsters (hey they are going to die anyway!)

The DM has two basic choices that work with these abilities:

1) He could play monsters as individuals that have to weigh up effort it takes them to attack versus the impact of getting a hit (including RP effects such as being called out a coward in Salla's example). Ignore the word "damage" here, when you have 100s of hit points, getting past a defense like this is usually just a trade-off, the effort it takes to push through magical defenses or past your character's guard.

2) He could play a tactical board game with the monster team with some pieces sacrificing themselves to your abilities so that the monster team as a whole gains the best out of the situation.

I expect most DMs use both approaches. I play more (2) than (1), it has the added effect that the abilties get showcased when bad guys are taken down by them.

I have a slightly different interpetation of useless than you I think.  A power that causes monsters to not hit your character is useless?  I'd think it was one of the potentially most useful powers you could get in that DMs game.  It's a you don't want to hit me power for that DM.  I'd consider that like combat gold personally as I could attack monsters without fear of reprisal.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the feed back guys.  Looking at from this angle my barbarin does tend to last longer than the tank. Laughing

So if you did retrain, let us know if the DM run the monster with suddenly not hearing about your powers anymore.

The other way to consider the power, beyond your DM's slightly lame "They've heard of you", is that the monsters become aware of the power's effect when you use it.  So they know (interpret it as reading how you're positioned/holding your weapon/watching the battlefield, I suppose, since you're a barbarian) that if they try to attack you now, they're going to get it.

At that point, as was sort of already said, it comes down to how intelligent the monster is.  If it's smart enough to know that you're poised for a counterattack, it's smart enough to weigh the cost of attacking you versus another player (like the tank, who will likely punish the monster for ignoring him and attacking you, anyways).  If the monster is animalistic, technically it shouldn't be ignoring you when you've just smacked it, since it's not smart enough to read you (unless your hit sends it scurrying away with its proverbial tail between its legs).

You could secretly retrain it next time you level.  The DM will be afraid to hit and you get the benefit of another power.  When/if he does finally realized you've retrained and all of a sudden the monsters are attacking you, I'd whack him with a rulebook.  =P

Which powers are the ones you are using?  I don't have access to the barbarian info at the moment and was wondering which they were.

When I DM I'd allow the monsters to weigh the pro's and con's of attacking someone with a power like that.  Typically those powers can only be set off once a round if they are lasting more than one round.  If that were the case the stronger leader monsters would just send in the fodder to take the hit first.

I'd also find monsters, especially minions, that have some type of attack when they die.  It just sounds like your DM is gimping himself by not attacking.

I'd do as it was said before and just take full advantage of not being attacked.

It's likely Curtain of Steel. Which, yes, is an amazing deterrant to not get hit. 3[W] encounter power, as an interrupt. Frost Wolf Rage would be the autodamage, at 3+CON mod cold damage. In which, he just needs to man up and drop some creatures with Cold Resist.

EDIT: Open your book first before posting, derp. It's a Reaction, not an interrupt, I fail.
DOUBLEEDIT: Ate my section on FWR.... bleh.

One question to ask is this: HOW did it hear about your tactics?

Really, shouldn't 99% of the creatures who have seen your battlefield tactics in action either be dead or on your team? Who told this baddie how you fight? Seems to me there's a traitor in your midst...

You could really play this up with your character becoming unbelievably paranoid, seeing dark undercurrents in even the most mild of actions.

"I'll make the campfire."

"SO YOU CAN BURN US TO DEATH IN OUR SLEEP?! I THINK NOT, TRAITORRRRR!"

Start randomly choosing another character in the game at every meal. Eat his food and give him yours. They might've poisoned yours.

Make endurance checks every night to sleep with your eyes open.

After a while start using another random player's eating utensils too. Yours could be coated in arsenic.

So much fun to be had with a munchkin DM like this

Would it help the DM realize he's using a pretty high amount of metagaming?  Probably not.

Would it be funny?  Very much so.

Perhaps, but this metagaming isn't really hurting the PCs; I'd argue that it's probably doing them more good than harm 90 percent of the time.  Why mess with it?

Because it will make your DM slowly explode. That's more fun than anything your DM can possibly plan.
