Okay so I had a first post titled "First Character" pertaining to a wreck of a build for a Sorcerer... but now I've revised it a little bit and I'd like to know what the general consensus is, or maybe a little more advice.

15 Human Sorcerer

*Originally I was going to use Prismatic Spray, but I'm unsure of the ruling. In the PHB text it reads that there's 7 rays, so does that mean you roll 7d8 to tell what each of the rays are, or only one ray hits the target and you only roll 1d8 to determine the type of ray?

Thanks a lot!

Are these stats your base, or do they include enhancements?

Spellcraft 18

As a straight sorc, you can't have 18 ranks in Decipher Script. It is a cross-class skill. Also, do you need your Spellcraft and Arcana that high? I mean, they are good skills, but you may want others.

Feats
Spell Focus : Evocation
Draconic Heritage (Bronze)
Spell Penetration
Draconic Power
Energy Substitution
Energy Admixture
Energy Gestalt

Which Energy Sub? Electricity I presume? To go with your Draconic Power? For Energy Gestalt to really pay off, you want a good mix of energy spells.

Nice. I'd probably have similar.

1st level
Mage Armor
Mage Hand, Greater
Grease
Residious Tar
Identify

Not bad. I might drop Identify. For as often as you'll use it, a wand might be better.

2nd level
Mirror Image
Luminous Swarm
Melf's Acid Arrow
Scorching Ray
Combust

Not bad. More direct damage/energy spells than I normally would pick myself, but, that fits your feat selection and overall theme pretty well. I rarely have a caster without False Life though.

3rd level
Haste
Fireball
Dispel Magic
Fly

Dispel Magic. Well, for the caster-level checks, this spell caps at 10. You have 15 caster-levels. I think you will have a hard time with spells cast by opponents of your CR.

4th level
Blast of Flame
Ice Storm
Incendiary Surge
Caustic Mire

I don't have the proper books in front of me, but aren't Blast of Flame and Incendiary Surge both cones of fire? Do you need both spells? Especially at 4th level, where there are spells like Enervation, Polymorph, EBT.

5th level
Control Water
Cone of Cold
Dimensional Door, Greater
Arc Lightning

How often do you think you'll use Control Water? If the campaign is such that there will be a lot, like on the sea, sure. Otherwise, get it on a scroll or two.

6th level
Chain Lightning
Oitiluke's Freezing Sphere
Disintegrate

All good. But this is where your Greater Dispel Magic could fit.

7th level
Power Word Blind
Teleport, Greater*

Not bad.

Only one ray hits, except when you roll an 8, and two hit.

I notice that outside of Mage Armor and Mirror Image, you don't have a lot of defensive spells. Not that you cannot live without them, use items and whatnot, but by this level, I like to make sure I have a few ways to get a miss chance and some ways to keep opponents off my back.

the only thing mage hand and predestignation get you is access to arcane trickster, a sorcerer needs more dexterity and constitution than intellegence, (bump up ac, hp, fort save, ref save, concentration checks, tumble checks, defensive casting, and such) decipher script is not a sorcerer class skill, (if you want it, heres a reccomendation, rogue 4 sorcerer 6 arcane trickster 5, but you will need higher dex int and con, that much cha isn't neccessary, take 5 more arcane trickster levels, essentially 1 16th level sorcerer, and a 10th level rogue in one package. take mage hand, predestignation (to qualify), greater invisibility, and if your dm approves it, the S.A.x5 magic missle, tell him each d4 is it's own missle and thus gets it's own sneak attack, while invisible, CL9+ in this case means 5 times your sneak attakc dice. rays work for this too a cha of 18 works in this case, remember the +3 twighlight mithral shirt (No arcane failure, 10%-10%=0) i love arcane tricksters, get ring of wizarddry type 1 for 20,000 gp gloves of dex +4, twighlight +3 mithral shirt 17,100 gp amulet of health +4 and if female or just long haired, Ribbon of Attractiveness/Cuteness/Hotness+4 (either works) (Charisma) or a robe of enduring grace +4, also cha enahncement (they don't stack) i like the idea of the long haired young female with a ribbon of cuteness +4, DM will love the idea.)

sorcerers were usually sorcereresses, thus meaning they were female, and were young for a pretty long time. (took them forever to get out of adoloescence)

A decent selection, but you have a ton of direct damage. Do you need all of it? If you dropped some similar spells, you could pick up more utility.

I was thinking Acid to hinder the mobs. But I don't know how that will conflict with my Draconic Heritage...

Don't worry about that. I was thinking elec because you have a strong motivation for casting elec spells as you have with them a better DC and caster-level. Any time the energy type doesn't matter, elec is your go-to type.

But you've a pretty well rounded mix of energy types, fire, elec, cold, acid. It won't matter much, which one you pick. Except with elec, all you energy admixed spells will get the benefit of the boost to caster-level and DC.

the only thing mage hand and predestignation get you is access to arcane trickster,

Prestidigitation is not a prereq for that PrC. Generally, it is more of a magical flavor spell. Mage Hand is a prereq, but lifting up to five pounds at range is actually useful more often than you'd think. Fetching objects, trying to set of a trap, securing a rope. Telekinesis is better, but this is a cantrip.

a sorcerer needs more dexterity and constitution than intellegence, (bump up ac, hp, fort save, ref save, concentration checks, tumble checks, defensive casting, and such)

Con is important. But, so are skills. It's a personal choice. I'd probably go with Con and leave my Int at 12 for a sorc, but it isn't my character.

Anyway, I don't think he was looking for AT advice.

if your dm approves it, the S.A.x5 magic missle, tell him each d4 is it's own missle and thus gets it's own sneak attack, while invisible, CL9+ in this case means 5 times your sneak attakc dice.

That would be quite a stretch, as Magic Missile has no attack roll and therefore isn't eligible for Sneak Attack damage. Even with rays, the general rule is, one standard-action, one sneak attack. Spells that launch multiple rays, such as Scorching Ray, use the volley rules: 1 sneak attack.

Enhancement bonuses to stats, or anything, don't stack.

sorcerers were usually sorcereresses, thus meaning they were female, and were young for a pretty long time. (took them forever to get out of adoloescence)

Have you considered prestige classing? Going into any of them will generally make you more powerful than not. So long as they full advance spells.

I would drop the feat spell focus evocation, as evocation generally doesnt rely on saves. Instead i would grab spell penetration, as a lot of evocation does allow SR.

anime/rpg cliche, i have never seen a male sorcerer or healer, (only female) and very few male rogues, all the rpg men were fighters, paladins, monks, knights and such.

Maigc missle has no attack roll, but it is an autohit offensive action, thus it should be feasible for Sneak Attack, (firing little seeker sparks from your finger) sounds like an attack, but it auto hits, why can someone get S.A. to all thier melee strikes but not each ranged attack, if you can hit a guy in several weak tissues with a shortsword, why not with a bow? or a spell for that matter? MM is weak enough already, at least go for volley rules with it.
at least it brings it closer to kelgores firebolt, (best level 1 ranged touch evocation ever, before you hit conjuration) though it maxes out the fastest at CL 5th. (5d6, partial counter to SR, both Evocation and Conjuration, if you ban one but not the other, you can still use it, yippie a point for the grey elf conjurer.)

And it begins...

never make fun of the adolescent female apprentice sorceress with the ribbon of cuteness +2, +4, or +6, men with long hair call it the ribbon of hotness.

just a head slot for a magic item. all it is is a magical charisma enhancing ribbon, (wondrous item) it costs just as much as a cloak of charisma of the same bonus, first they'd atttack your cloak which is mundane, not realizing your charisma comes from your hair ribbon, and they might find it odd that you almost always have your hair in a ponytail, with a long flowing (insert vibrant color here) robe that enhance your saves, gloves that enhance your dex, an undervest to raise your constitution and a small cute decieving adolescent stature with a look of immature cuteness as if you were about to pounce then hug, remember to make you power word "Huggie Huggie Bo Buggie" for your touch spells at close range, shocking embrace.

anime/rpg cliche, i have never seen a male sorcerer or healer, (only female) and very few male rogues, all the rpg men were fighters, paladins, monks, knights and such.

I didn’t realize he was asking about anime clichés. I’m almost positive he isn’t playing in your campaign.

Maigc missle has no attack roll, but it is an autohit offensive action, thus it should be feasible for Sneak Attack,

Maybe it should be, but it isn’t. If you’d like to get rules for using spells to get sneak attack, you can find them in Complete Arcane and in an article on the D&D site, “Rules of the Game: All about sneak attacks.” Sum it up: SA requires an attack roll (no Magic Missile) and damage, of some kind (no penalties, like Ray of Enfeeblement.)

(firing little seeker sparks from your finger) sounds like an attack, but it auto hits, why can someone get S.A. to all thier melee strikes but not each ranged attack,

It isn’t explicitly stated why volley rules apply. Though, the general consensus is that it has to do with the type of action involved. Someone firing three arrows in a round is using a Full Attack action. Casting Scorching Ray with three rays is a Standard Action. (Note: Firing multiple arrows as a standard action, e.g. Manyshot, also uses the volley rules.)

I’m not claiming that I think these rules are sound, logically; but, they are the rules. There is a seperate forum for house rules if you do not like them.

MM is weak enough already, at least go for volley rules with it.

The fact that it auto hit is why it shouldn’t have SA added to it.

Kelgor’s Firebolt: decent spell. Averages 17.5 pts. of damage when it tops out, same as a Magic Missile. It tops out 4 levels sooner, which is a plus, but, it allows a reflex save. Hmm. Not so good. Magic Missile has no save, can strike multiple targets, and is force, so it hits everything, even those incorporeal buggers. You can have your 3.5 damage when you fail SR. I’ll use Magic Missile.

if you ban one but not the other, you can still use it, yippie a point for the grey elf conjurer.)

No offense, but you’re just a fountain of inaccurate advice here. With the dual-school spells, if you are bared from either school, you cannot use the spell. This is spelled out very clearly, with an example. See PHB2, page 95.

My big advice is don't play this game. If your first character is level 15 you will be swamped by all the crazy things that can come into play. Too many toys, too little experience.

Beyond that? Take more defensive abilities like blink/blur. And/Or get some DR. Drop Knowledge Arcana, Bluff, and Spellcraft a bit and swap Int/Con. Decipher Script is too high.

I reccomend ditching haste, you won't get nearly as much use out of it as you'd like and 3rd level has a lot of good magic. Dispel also, for reasons mentioned by another poster. You need some better dispelling options, this won't cut it. Cut out 1 or 2 nukes (I hate nuking, but it seems to be what you want so I'll run with that) at least and mix things up a bit.

May I reccomend phantom steed as a third level pick? It makes it very easy to stay out of enemy range and makes terrain a non-issue mostly. If you insist on avoiding defense spells Phantom Steed can help cover that base in a lot of situations while giving you the ability to position yourself for really good offensive strikes. Might want points in ride though. You'll get way more mileage out of this than you would haste.

1st level: Mage Armor Mage Hand Greater, Grease, Residious Tar, Identify

Mage armour does not seem very useful at this stage when you would have bracers of armour+6 at least, or a twillight mithril chainshirt. Not sure about mage hand, or what residious tar does. I would recommend bringing in ray of enfeeblement (no save). Shield is optional, only if you do not have an enchanted mithril buckler.

2nd level: Mirror Image, Luminous Swarm, Melf's Acid Arrow, Scorching Ray, Combust

No idea what luminous swarm does. Acid arrow is pretty much crap at this point, and moot due to scorching ray. Combust seems unnecessary as well, you have too many overlapping sources of damage. Maybe bring in glitterdust/web, alter self, false life or/and rope trick.

3rd level: Haste, Fireball, Dispel Magic, Fly

At this point, fireball and dispel magic don't seem that useful. Haste is good for buffing up the entire party and getting on everyone's good side, so I would keep it. Consider bringing in displacement - it meshes very well with mirror image in blocking out hits (namely from foes with single powerful attacks). Greater magic weapon is great for boosting the enhancement bonuses of your fighters' weapons, so they can spend the money on other properties instead (this in turn improves the combat capabilities of your party, and it has a very long duration).

4th level: Blast of Flame, Ice Storm, Incendiary Surge, Caustic Mire

Sadly, apart from ice storm, I have no idea what the rest do, though their names suggest that again, you have overloaded on the direct damage front. Icestorm is a little attractive as it does not offer a save, but the low damage stinks. Also, the list of 4th lv spells available in the PHB seem to cater more to utilitarian/buff spells like stoneskin, polymorph, enervation, black tentacles, greater invis, dimensional anchor (vs teleporting foes) or solid fog, so these are the few spells I would recommend as well.

5th level: Control Water, Cone of Cold, Dimensional Door, Greater Arc Lightning

Again, seems like 1 damage spell too many. Probably keep either cone of cold or lightning arc and dump the other. Dimensional door should be useful (going by its name), though I am tempted to go for the 4th lv version and bring in teleport instead. The tactic here is to reserve low lv slots for general purpose spells, while using higher lv slots primarily for attack (to get maximum effect out of save dcs where applicable).

6th level: Chain Lightning, Oitiluke's Freezing Sphere, disintegrate

Same problem here, you run the risk of painting your sorc into a corner by building him as a 1-trick pony who excels only at blasting. Retain just 1 (probably disintegrate), and swap out the rest for support spells like greater dispelling, greater heroism (nice on fighters), contingency or true-seeing.

7th level: Power Word Blind, Teleport, Greater*

Not a big fan of power word spells, since their hp thresholds tend to be too limiting and situational. Maybe bring in limited wish instead? Don't let the xp cost dissuade you, it is a very powerful spell which can greatly improve the versatility of a sorc. If all else fails, it can provide a -7 to a save in preparation for a disintegrate.

Greater teleport might be redundant if you had teleport earlier on, so perhaps replace that with forcecage (excellent for shutting down melee foes), though it can get expensive fast if use repeatedly.

At the same time, consider taking metamagic feats like empower or extend spell so you can make more efficient use out of your slots (for example, your 7th lv slots can be used for an empowered cone of cone, or any other 7th lv slot). Swap out your familiar for the metamagic specialist feature in PHB2 so you don't have to suffer from an increased casting time.

Hope this helps.

Wow. This isn't the char Op boards. The boy just needs a viable concept. I think what he has going is pretty decent for a first attempt. The fact that he's starting at 15 means the chances of this character or campaign needing to last is irrelevant.

He needs to get a feel for his group and figure out what he needs or doesn't. If it's all combat, the last two posters (although contradictory) have the right idea. I'm pretty confident though that as long as he doesn't have a self-defeating build like the first one he posted about, he'll do fine.

I still think the metamagic feats would be a good idea. Would give him something to mess around with.

don't diss the ribbon of cuteness. it is the ultimate charisma enhancer. less suspicious than a cloak too. same price as well, need intellect, how bout a scarf of the nash,
(same as headband of intellect, only a scarf, around the neck)
Concealed vest of health (under the robe)
Gloves of dexterity, on hands
Robe of resistance on body
+3 twighlight mithral shirt (no arcane failure) only 17,100 gp for this baby
(also concealable)
dagger, not staff, finesse so you have something to protect yourself with, it makes a good focus too.
shocking grasp hug activated by phrase "Huggie Huggie Bo Buggie" (if anime loli, or just plain mel from luminous arc)
(if mel where you would swap ribbon for mushroom hat, wearing pink and light blue. this is flavor. if so, find reasons to sob in character over everything, but i'm sure you are not the mel type, healing and cold)

( evocation is definitely lina inverse, ask dm if you can homebrew "Dragon Slave" the best nuke in existance, instant death to greatwyrm gold dragons or even the tarrasque, where you find reasons to pick fights, remember, fire, fire, fire.)
female gender
desert elf or artic elf (str penalty instead of con, dex bonus will be appreciated, unearthed arcana)

It's not the charop boards, but it is a sorc starting at 15. He doesn't get much freedom to undo mistakes, so spell choices are important. And it's his first character, so if he does wind up playing it for a while with nothing but nukes on the lists he might find he doesn't like it that much. Encouraging him to mix things up a bit is just good for a new player. Classes like this require more optimization.

Even if it's not a pure combat game I feel I have a good idea. How do the reccomendations the two of us gave in any way make the character concept weaker? He's so full of nuke you wouldn't even notice a difference except maybe lack of dead. The skill point thing is based on experience. Those skills don't get much play relative to your HP or something like Ride + Steed, and my games are heavy RP with 0-2 battles per game. Still no weaker a concept, you can incorporate all of those things without necessarily maxing them out as he has.

I do think the quibbles by level are a bit much for this place. General suggestions w/ an example or two to keep suck away will work.

What's with the sexist pedo-troll?

4th level: Blast of Flame, Ice Storm, Incendiary Surge, Caustic Mire

Blast of Flame: Cone burst 60', NO SR is applied, Ref for half.10d6 max

Incendiary Surge:can't find this one. Not on the WotC list. Is it homebrew or spelled wrong. Maybe a new book?

Caustic Mire: 20' burst sonic; 15d6 max; SR applies; reflex half.

I don't know. If you can keep the DC high maybe I try to take spells more like combust just damage no save.

Maybe something like sword of deception, Not really a energy spell but can be useful. Or orb of acid could be useful with your feats. No SR or half damage on save. you have alot of area spell. Maybe take the ring of wizardry for one of you spell levels you use alot. Healing belt and magic bedroll. An external wand or two.

Alternatively, consider working your way up to archmage. Mastery of elements is crucial in penetrating elemental resistance (by changing the damage of your spells to whatever element your foe is not resistant to). Sculpting so you don't accidentally nuke your fighters, spell power for that little extra boost, and maybe arcane reach so you can deliver your touch spells (if any) in relative safety.

I will be as tactful as I can be.....You will get destroyed by anyone with greater invis and fly, you have no detection spells(besides detect magic). You need more/any observation spells.

I go by the acronym DOOMU when I create sorcs.
D=Defense
O=Offense
O=Observation
M=Movement
U=Utility
you need some spells in every one of these categories to have a viable character, if not you will be hindered. Some spells cover more than category which is great(limited wish being a great one).

Thats not what I said at all. I meant that you and runestar were giving contradictory advice, but that listening to either of you would improve his combat effectiveness. I was just commenting that that might not be necessary at this point.

While your advice was good, he (as a new player) had no frame of reference for utility. He's just going on everybody's word as to what spells are good. Ideally, as long as his character wasn't a trainwreck, he'd eventually learn from experience, the things you're all trying to tell him.

It felt implied. My bad.

I still think it's almost required that we try to help him throw utility in if nothing else. If you're stuck with a character for a few months that does little but nuke it gets kind of boring. Fun spells make life interesting and keep you contributing heavily out of combat. But often they make you stronger in combat too.

I've always been fond of Mage of the Arcane Order (in Complete Arcane) for sorcerers. Sure, you need to have the Arcane Preparation feat along with the required feats, but that spell pool allows you to call a few spells per day that aren't on your spells known list as long as you have the spell slots to spare.

If you don't have access to Complete Arcane, kindly disregard that paragraph. Also, Archmage works decently for sorcerers because of their amount of spell slots, and the mastery of shaping (so as not to hurt your allies with area spells) and the aforementioned mastery of elements are neat and keen, respectively. Also, Arcane reach and spell like ability are good for their own reasons.

I couldn't read the explanation of the chant, the OP was too full of wrong. So I won't join in

Blasphemy! *smites*

Hey, isn't Nightmare Spinner Charisma based? I forget the details but that might be worthwhile to look into.

((I wonder if TimelordSimone and Optimized_Commoner are still around... *checks* Well OC hasn't been on in months, but TS has... ^.^))

sorcerers were usually sorcereresses, thus meaning they were female, and were young for a pretty long time. (took them forever to get out of adoloescence)

What the hell? Dude...seriously what the hell? Please get out of this thread.

As for the OP:

You dont have many defensive spells, that might be a problem in the future, but other than that i like the build, you might want to consider getting rid of identify and control water too. I cant think of anything to replace them with off the top of my head, ill probably have a followup post later when i get off my arse and get my spell compendium...

1st level: Net of shadows was the only defense thing i could come up at 1st
targeting ray could be useful.

5th: Couldn't find defense for 5th ether???
Contingent enery resist.
Spritwall
Wall of limbs
Dragonic might
greater blink
That was about it some are not really defense. The only one that might match the build is Contingent enery resist.

First, to OP (I think you're OP):

If you don't think the defensive spells match your concept focus heavily on mobility to soften the blow to your hitpoints. Unless your DM is bad (or a softy) you'll need one or the other. Sorc=Squishy. But I really would reccomend at least 1 more damage mitigation/avoidance spell. Preferably something that isn't the same type as mirror image that isn't just an AC boost (your AC will not be high enough unless you put a lot of effort into it). If your only defenses are illusion then closed eyes+blind fight OR true seeing ruin your day. Throw stoneskin in there or something at least. Reflavor it as dragon scales so it fits your concept more closely if you like. I promise you'll be happy you did, and you won't feel like the character is different at all.

Apparently something's awry. Please continue.

Sorry. The assertion that there are fewer alignments than listed in the D&D books we use now is silly to me, though I'd maybe see some truth in getting rid of CN. It's not a realistic alignment unless there's serious mental illness (in my experience), and that means it's the disease and not a belief system.

Anyway, the eradication of alignments like Lawful Neutral makes me throw the post right out. I think most people IRL are one of the three neutrals. I know for certain I'd be lawful neutral if anything on the alignment axis. I have no doubt of that. And so many of the justifications and explanations are wrong (I think it completely misinterpreted lawful as a concept).

But really we shouldn't rant about that here. Might start the troll talking again.

I think either I missed something, or you clicked the wrong thread. Where did alignments come into this discussion?

On the origins of Mahoia and Bonaven (the chant) is a link in your sig. But it keeps taking me to the first post in some thread about alignments in the mature topics forum.

Just double-checked. I'm not hallucinating (or if I am it's really good). Your most recent post isn't showing the sig, but I keep seeing your above posts with that link. And it goes to some alignment thread. Having jumped to the last page just to see if I'd guess the right one, I see the chant being used. So I assume somewhere between the first post I can't read because it's so wrong and the last posts that don't make sense to me I'd find the explanation. The link isn't taking me to the exact post, just the first post of the thread.

Oh, right. I thought it did before, but I guess not. It's around post 300, give or take about a dozen.

Gist of it is everyone tries to prove the poster wrong, he still doesn't get it, I make some random sarcastic comment and well... you'll see the rest.

I think the post your might be refering to is #283. It has the rolling eyes thing.

Side not It is easier to post the Quote so it takes you right to the spot you want. Posting the link most of the time takes you to the page at the top or the start of the thread. Can be very confusing.

Lol. Gotta fix that link man. Nobody will know the origins if they have to read through 10 pages to find it. ;)

I'm sad I missed that discussion. I mean, it had to be infuriating, but I like that kind of debate. Arguing with stupid people who act like brick walls is fun. Just no fun reading about it after the fact.

That is a good point. I think I did it that way because linking to the post doesn't show what led up to it or the ongoing development, and linking to the page... well it depends on what you set posts per page to.

Personally I found it amusing, and the thread devolved into chant spam because it was more productive and entertaining.

Though originally intended as a means of dealing with Law vs Chaos debates, a pair of Elder Gods are quite capable of dealing with a crazy pedo. :P

You called?

As far as the OP goes, I can't say I've ever played at that level, but I can see how having nothing but offensive spells would probably get boring after a while. So, mix it up a bit.

Hi there. And yeah, it gets redundant after a while. As long as you have your element bases covered and your general type covered (single target, AoE, etc) you probably have enough DD stuff, assuming you're doing this route (which isn't so good, but meh).

I screwed up on the skill list... I'm taking Survival instead of Decipher Script. Survival is a Dragon Heritage bonus skill.
