The NPC healer Hates me.....

I'm very new to D&D the campaign I am currently playing is my first. We play on the 3.5 system ( not sure if this is important for this is an RP issue) My party consist of 5 PC's and 1NPC

My character is a Rogue and normally since he picks locks opens the treasure chests and is in charge of dividing up loot. When it comes to gold every PC gets an even share, and the NPC gets half a share which he is happy with.

But when it comes to magical items, my Rogue only cares for things he can use, then everything else he basically throws on the floor and lets the others work it out.

Now our healer an NPC cleric is pissed and refuses to talk/heal me because when ever there are magical items he doesn't get much because he doesn't speak up and now  feels riped off.

This NPC is played by the DM and I don't really know how to resolve this situation in character seeing as we never really have much down time and are constantly in battle, and I don't really know if it is ok for me to aproach my DM and ask him what I should do.

(this lack of our healer, healing/speaking to me has lead me to die three times each time costing me a very beneficial magical item to return to life.)

Ask the DM what he wants you to do, and why he's having the NPC be such a jerk. NPCs don't really "exist" after all, and if you have no idea how to address it, then your character can't either. Once you know what the issue is, you can have your character try to resolve it with the other. Asking the other players/their characters can help too. A healer not doing his job for whatever reason is grounds to replace him I'd say (unless the consensus is to replace your Rogue).

I mean, you are only presenting a part of the story I'm sure, but unless you're actively trying to prevent the NPC from getting items (such as claiming magical holy symbols for yourself or the like, or always taking first dibs on everything even slightly useful or selling big ticket items when other characters would find them extremely useful) there's no reason for it.

Of course, it's always possible that one of you is just being spiteful based on out of game events somehow.

Is the NPC healer an underling, or a party member? If the NPC is a hireling, fire him and find a new one.

If its a party member, state that the healer isn't doing his job, and recruit the other PCs to kick him out.

And what god does this NPC have? Maybe have a word with the high priest, in that the priest's greed and foolishiness has caused you bodily harm several times as he's refused to heal.

Also, do you feel this is an OoC or IC issue? If the DM is playing an NPC, I would think the DM should be happy no one has tried to help themselves to the NPC's gold yet. In many player's opinions, NPCs should be seen, but not heard. Do remind him the NPC should help OUT the party, and is in fact, not a PC and therefore not even entitled to an equal share of magical items.

This sounds like complete DM BS.

You are new to D&D so it is hard to realize when something is part of the game or something is BS.  The cleric is probably of good alignment and if he refuses healing or aid to those in need and by mission of action you die, then his god should probably punish him.

Also, clerics have a high wisdom score usually and they are modelled after enlightened priests so it is bad RP that this wise and enlightened cleric decides to blame lack of items on others when it was his own lack of speaking up which put him in the situation.

If possible find a new group to play with because the DM is doing it wrong.

kill the cleric and take all his gold and things from him. then look for a new hireling, offering a quarter share of gold and a paltry few magic items now and then. create the contract before fulfilling the hire. doing this in game and in character will give a strong clue ot the DM that his NPCs are along with the party under a degree of permission from the party.

plus, speak with the DM about how this is going down. maybe it is a chance to develop your character some with a bit of diplomacy/intimidation/bluff to show the cleric what an error it is not to assist you as a member of the party.

but my first advice is kill the cleric in his sleep.

We are currently in another world "the domain of dread"?? I believe its called, and this cleric came with us from the old world and was chosen to help us.

Everyone in the party is lawful/good besides me so if I killed him they would prob put me in jail/leave me.

The DM and I work together, so I am going to talk to him tomorrow at work.

One of the strange things is that when ever the cleric says something bitchy; OOC he like laughs and comments on how bitchy he is being. (the DM really gets into his characters even if they are NPCs)

Yes, that is fairly strange.

You wouldn't think a DM would amuse himself that much at the players' expense. I mean, sure NPCs will sometimes insult PCs, say ridiculous and laughable things, or the DM has a "great" idea or the situation just turns out so crazy the DM can't help but laugh at it also -- but he shouldn't be the only one laughing all the time.

well if all else fails,  next big score of loot you come across, take it all.

and while everyone is resting for the night, put it all on the healer, and in the morning accuse him of theft

They are lawful good, and letting their buddy die because some Prima Donna healer wants more shinies? I know there are several valid interpetations of the alignment, but...Maybe your character "Converts" to one of their gods, in the vain hope of battling the greed of the evil character. Approach the character in question for help and guidance, since you ain't getting it from the NPC.

And for the record, how much of the hauls, (And your cut, of course) can you recall? I assume you aren't taking the lion's shares of things.

From the NPC's perspective, complaining about the fact that they don't get an equal share of the loot seems to be perfectly fine IC. It seems rather odd to jump from saying nothing to bringing out the punishment without doing some talking first. Are you sure you have not missed some clues from the DM or your fellow gamers?

Mind you, the Dread Domains is another name for Ravenloft and it basically means your DM is trying to run a horror campaign. The DM might have plans with his NPC. The DM might be setting the NPC on a path of corruption, perhaps even using an outside source of evil that is building up on the NPCs perceived lack of appreciation from the rest of the group. If that is the case, the DM can do little more then letting you know the behaviour is out of character, or run the risk giving away too much. To be honest, if he OOC mentioning how much of a jerk the NPC is then that is exactly what he is doing (albeit in a roundabout way). If this is true, then your best bet is to talk IC with your fellow adventurers about the healer's behaviour and depending on that discussion confront the group. Treat it as a RP opportunity. Remember, good aligned character will not withhold healing simply because they feel unappreciated when doing so means a companion of theirs might die or their mission is jeapordized and when it can be solved simply by rearranging some existing treasure.

2 possibilities

1 - Your DM sucks and has no clue how to RP a lawful good cleric.

2 - Your DM is clever and an evil agent has infiltrated your group undert he guise of a LG healer.

1 general note for new players

Don't take any guff from no punk-a$$ NPC.  If you do you will never see an end to DMtrobation NPC nitwits.

it was like 12,000 gold and an assortment of rubies. (this last treasure I found underwater, I dont remember what we fought but I had a necklass of adaptation, so i could breath underwater) So when I came up from underwater I tried to give the cleric one gem that was worth 5,000gold. i knew it was more then his fair share, but I was trying to get him to like me as everyone else in the party has a strong distaste for me.

He refused to take it and ratted me out to the rest of the group for trying to horde the gold for myself. So we spit it equally and each got around 4k gold and he got 2k gold.

The magical items were: ring of protection +2, some bowl of a water elemental, some staff, studded leather armor +2, and a ring of animal friendship.

Mage got the bowl and the staff.

I took the studded leather armor

and the two rings no one wanted, so I just put in my bag until they were needed.

Bascilly looting works like this. I come up from chest,

Me: "I got these two rings, this cool bowl, a stick, and ooh some armor." *I'll throw things I dont know what they are at the mage so she can figure it out*

Mage: "I am the only one here who can use this bowl, and i would like the staff *takes bowl and staff*"

(mage tells us what the rings do)

Me: "anyone want these? or should I just hold onto them till we need em?"

No one speaks up, I pocket them.

Then the cleric starts bitchin about he doesn't have any magical items not 5 min later....

why does no one else in the party like you? i still think the cleric thing is terrible, but is there really no one else in the party that shows loyalty and trust? does the party understand the role you play and feel you are truly an asset to their adventuring?

is the dislike extending beyond the table into the realm of players not liking your character? or worse yet, players not liking you?

this sounds much deeper than the DM getting loonie about an NPC which he oculd easily give magic items to by placing those items in the parcel.

I'm starting to get the feeling that OP is "that guy".

You know, the guy in the party the DM and other players use as a punching bag.

If this is the case you really need to switch groups because your "that guy" status is not gonna go away.  The pecking order hath been established and you aren't no alpha.

Switch groups to find a place where you aren't low-man on the totem pole, bro.

Good luck.

The OP basically says "I take the magic stuff I like and I throw the rest on the ground for the rest of the peons to fight over." And "I take the magic armor and throw the rest at the magic user to sort out."

Then he says "nobody in the party likes me."

Um.... duh?

Was anyone else in the party a build that could have used the armor? Yeah, taking a major shiny is asking for trouble, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he took if the rest of the party was say, a Monk, a Fighter and a Paladin.

I wasn't really commenting on what he ended up taking, I was more referring to his attitude when he describes how he distributes loot. "Throwing it on the floor" and "throwing it at the mage". Or saying the cleric "ratted him out" when he seemed to be trying to take a larger share of the loot. If he actually uses that sort of language or description IN GAME, I can pretty much guarantee you any character I would be playing would not care much for him as a party member.

True, perhaps not the best language or method of loot distrubution. But a LG letting someone die in front of them should probably have some sort of reason. I am basically wondering if the dispute is started because the NPC or other PCs felt like they wanted loot, or if the healer is being a jerk.

I was the only one who needed the armor (im the only one who uses leather besides the ranger who already had the same armor i've taken) But then again i do play a rogue he likes "shinys" but he is pretty fair, and is glad to have  the party for helping him out of living in the slums.

I dont think that "distaste" is the best word. Its more of i joined the campaign a little late (they were all lvl 3-4) and most of them became good friends. My character just kinda helped out the party via tacking someone. and got sucked into the adventure.

And an example of this is one of my deaths consists of me and the mage both were both at -10 HP and only one of us could be saved on the round. and only one person was close enough and the mages life was chosen over mine. (we play 3.5 -11 = death)

So i was trying to get him to like me.

So if I understand it right you actually tried to take all the loot? Wouldn't blame your fellow players for not liking you then. I usually outright tell people around my table to not make character who would steal from their party, a bit controlling perhaps, but I found it leads to so much unpleasantness outside the game since people can angry for real while the object of their anger just claims it was in-character.

If your character has proven to actually take extra money "for his trouble" or otherwise more than an equal share for no reason, then my character would probably let you die as well. And then wouldn't go through bringing you back.

I don't know if you were just trying to bribe the cleric or what though (he's already behind on money) and intended to split the rest of the cash evenly.

Well I never like and try to avoid games where the DM is playing a PC.  It's hard to be imparital as a DM when your playing the game.  Its even harder to do all the things a DM is suppose to do plus add on the headaches aof playing a PC.

Sounds like no one in the group wanted to play a healer.  In my 3.5 games if no one in the group wanted to heal, then let it.  The games just take so much longer.  After any heavy battle it could takes weeks in game of rest to get back to normal.

If no one wants to be a healer, might I suggest trying 4th.  It's a bit more fun to be the "healer" because you can do a lot more then heal.

If you can find someone to be a healer and your happy with 3.5 then just have someone be the healer and have the DM just DM.  might solve another problem

it was more of less a bribe with some gems I found with the loot, i was going to split the hard gold, but keep a few gems. Its my character so yeah.

Our DM really likes E3.5 and honestly im 100% new to D&D so i really dont know whats diffrent between the editions.

And i dont plan on looking for another role playing group cause I dont think I would play if not for these guys. We are all friends b4 i started playing.

Untrue, if the DM is adjusting the challenges accordingly. My last little group of DMPCs would get squished quickly if it weren't for the party, although they all have their roles. Never more than one at a time, and only for a couple of encounters at a time, unless they really needed one for longer. Besides, they like to banter with one of them on downtime, like any other PC.

Not that she knows anything they don't.

Yeah so the NPC is healing me again, and we are talking. Lot of things in the plot happened so we were kinda forced to put things behind us.

i DID die again tho bringing the total to like four.

It was really funny tho, we are underground with a bunch of roots in the ceiling above us, and w come across a strange thing up ahead. I go up to search it for traps and a bunch of the roots swing down grab me and pull me up doing around 12 damage around.

It was up to my party to figure out how to get me down, and they are all baffled. The mage thought it would be a good idea to fireball the roots. needless to say i was turned into a burn crisp, the NPC healer just learned raise dead. so it cost me a level and 1kg to come back to life. but I think its all cleared up.. lol i still think i die too much....
