The Ranger and Magic

I’m playing 3.5e and was wondering what the deal is with Rangers (and other classes like Paladins) getting magical spells at a delayed rate.

I really just want to confirm that Ranger spells like Alarm don’t become available until the player reaches level 6. I was just a little confused because the table in the player’s handbook (3-13: The Ranger) has “spells per day 0” at level 4. What is meant by 0 spells at level 4 when a dash – at level 1 must mean N/A? Is there a way for a Ranger to get a spell at level 4 if modifiers are high enough?

Thanks.

If your spellcasting attribute is high enough to give you bonus spells (see the chart at the front of the PHB), then you can add them to the zero entry to get actual spells to cast.

So for example, a Ranger with an ability score of 14 has a modifier score of +2 which grants 1 bonus 1st level spell and 1 bonus 2nd level spell. At level 4 a Ranger still has no spells but is able to get one 1st level spell as a bonus but not the 2nd level bonus spell becuase it doesn't become unlocked untill level 8 however they will beable to pick one 1st level spell at level 6 and another at level 7 with an addition spell bring picked at level 8 and along with their bonus spell for the +2 modifier bonus from their 14 winsdom score that has blocked before.

I understand if that is corect.

Thanks.

It was a bit hard to decipher the run-on sentence, but I think you've got it.
