| #1daemynFeb 07, 2009 15:18:34 | I have decided to take a break from DnD. just started 4th edition and our DM decided to put extreme control on the game. Not allowing action points to accumulate between game session but having us keep track of daily powers. Not allowed to look in the books at any magic items at all. Adventurers Vault is off limits. DMG is off limits. Manual of the Planes off limits Monster Manual off limits (I can understand that one) Some of our powers become limited. Flaming sphere doused by normal water. Flaming sphere sinks in water. Grasping shadows. if in zone and pushed into another zone of effect -no damage taken. Magic items take a week to be made We gave one enemy quarter so we could interrogate it. It proved unco-operative so our bard had the ranger kill it. DM forced the cleric to kicked the bard out. Because it was "murder." Enemies that are behind a door waiting for us get surprise initiative even if we are "delaying" for the door to be opened. Barbarian died before we even rolled initiative. Ranger was bloodied before we rolled initiative. We tried to talk to the DM and it became blatantly clear he didn't read the DMG and that this is his story. We have a first time player who the DM forced to play a cleric and the DM is not allowing the cleric to play using his own belief on his deity. It is all frustrating. Anyone else experience this??? |

Oh and forcing someone to play a class is probably one of the worst things you can do, this especially hurts the first impressions of the game if said person is new to D&D. talk to him and if he won't comprimise then get a new dm. sounds like he wants to read a book more than DM "This is my story", no, this is the player's story. edit: I would say the only person that could act first is the first person that busts through the door, then everyone rolls initiative after that first person. oh and I would read in the magic item books just to **** him off if I felt that much under control, get an arguement started so you can bring things out into the open, sounds extreme but i bet ya everyone will put in their two cents. OH and tell him you are reading the things from left to right when not in session :D |

Otherwise it's tough to kill a character in a single round, unless it's the target of directed fire from several elites I'd say. DMs being bad isn't really related to D&D though. You don't necessarily need a break from the game, just him. What do you mean "accumulate between game sessions" ? You mean if you ended on one encounter and then take another the next time you meet, he doesn't count that as 2 in a row for milestones? Pretty weird since your characters are just as drained as they were before. But actually nobody really knows what happens if you try to have flaming sphere roll over water. Perfectly normal DM call there. |

I saw a lvl 1 swordmage go from full to unconscious in a surprise round. I think he was hit by 2 minions, a soldier, and a striker. He didn't have the best Con, but I recall it was a positive multiplier. Barbs are even easier to hit, so I can see it happening. --------------------------- Daemyn, your DM is a , plain and simple. Maybe he's honestly trying and doesn't know any better or maybe he's just on a power trip, but either way you should really discuss your feelings with him. Check with the rest of the players to see if they agree with you too. Try not to be confrontational, but it might behoove him to realize that if he doesn't start fulfilling the wants of his players he might not have many left. |
