| #1scoutvalasMar 18, 2008 13:41:34 | I am getting ready to play in a PBP Tomb of Horror game where all four of the traditional roles are already filled. I am thinking of playing a Whisper Gnome Beguiler. It's something I have wanted to play for awhile now but have not had the opportunity. Our starting Level is 9 with standard starting gold. Most books are approved as long as we check with the DM first. I am just wondering if anyone can tell me, without ruining the Tomb of Horror's plot, if a Beguiler will work. I figure that they can fill the role of an additional "sneaky" character as well as adding some to the Arcane casting of the part. Which could also free up our main Arcane caster to concentrate on more offensive spells along with the utility spells the Beguiler does not have access to... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

| #3shadowshimmerMar 18, 2008 14:28:08 | It is an interesting choice and it really depends on your level, luck and what you do to determine if you will live or not. I have seen Monks, Rogues, Clerics, Fighters, Wizards, etc all die in the Tomb of Horrors and all were certainly powerful and played well. Give it a try and good luck. |

| #7grovel_hits_it_yesMar 18, 2008 17:59:16 | The tomb is a tough mod, a very tough mod. Good luck. It will depend more on the TYPE of player you are than on WHAT you play. |
| #8callistaMar 18, 2008 18:01:27 | And on how merciful the DM is. |

| #11aarondirebearMar 19, 2008 0:19:37 | Buy life insurance for your character. Best not to mention WHERE you're about to go adventuring. |
| #12evilcouchMar 19, 2008 0:34:44 | Ia ia Cthulhu Fhtagn! Cthulhu Fhtagn! Cthulhu Fhtagn! *gibbers* |
| #13toucanbuzzMar 19, 2008 9:32:31 | Ask your DM to pull out the original 1st edition Tomb, not the watered down 3.x conversion. Then, it won't matter what class you choose, for the fate will be the same.... |
| #14drmorganesMar 20, 2008 6:55:42 | As if the rest of the replies weren't enough... A beguiler will have little, if nothing, to add to the group besides, perhaps, another Search Check. Ultimately, however, your chance of success is almost entirely dependent on whether your DM is using the original AD&D S1 module or the one WotC updated for the 3.5 Edition Rules back in 2005 - and whether he's willing to fudge your Save DCs. If the former, abandon all hope, ye who enter. Your character's death is assured and the best you can hope to achieve is bragging rights for how far the party made it. If the latter, you have a chance to actually make it through. The traps actually work like the rules say they should... |
| #15BloodDragonMar 20, 2008 10:58:47 | The tomb is a tough mod, a very tough mod. Good luck. Yeah this is generally it. Buy a few scrolls of Revivify (Spell Compendium), Lowest CL, and make sure you have a character that can use it, so Beguiler is a good choice. Hopefully you have a 9th level cleric that can use it on you. Not sure illision-casters are the "best" choice... |
| #16nightwyrmMar 20, 2008 14:33:18 | Play a wizard, memorize your spells, sell your spell book then buy even more Revivify scrolls. (and a herd of sheep, and 21' poles). |
| #17AlanBruceMar 20, 2008 14:54:03 | I ran that module last year. We had two rogues, one wizard and an NPC fighter in the party (I gave them a heads up about the module, so they considered two rogues would suffice). The actual game time lasted about 2 hrs. They never made it past the first corridor. Yeah... it's a difficult one. |
