I started a D&D group with my friends and originally we played 3.5, which I love. Now they all play 4e which I don't like and also don't know how to play! Am I just being selfish or should I ask them about switching?

Give it a try. 4e is really easy to learn. It should take you no more than 20 minutes to get a player understanding of the rules and the differences from 3.5.

Just try it out for a session or two and decide then if you don't like it. Don't be another nay sayer that never actually felt how everything plays out.

the only other option is to go find another group.

I would say to try 4e. its very diffrent from 3.5 so dont go in expecting the same stuff, treat it like a completly diffrent rpg.

However if you dont have fun in 4e, you might bring up which system they prefer. if they all like 4e over 3.5 then you might be out of luck.

I would suggest giving it a try. Personally, I consider 4e a hands down improvement over 3e in every single possible way. But that is just my subjective opinion. If, after giving it a try, you hate it, talk to the gaming group. Maybe they will be willing to switch to 3e. If not, and they are of the same opinion as me, then unfortunately you are out of luck. Your best bet then is to look up some gamer classifieds for games in your area, and try to find some new people, of like minds to yours, in your area to play with.

How can you know you don't like it if you don't know how to play it?

Why do they play 4e? Is it that one person in the group loves it? Consider asking them to alternate every campaign.

Do they have the 4e books but not the 3.5? Offer yours!

Did they just want something new? Ask that the next one is back to 3.5.

Does the current DM just like 4e? Offer to DM the next game, on the condition that it is 3.5. Be willing to comprimise on other factors.

If it boils down to them just perfering 4e, consider playing just to be with your friends. Don't force yourself if you detest the system, but you might need to comprimise in order to play with your friends.

Give it a try. More than just 20 minutes, too. Play it for a few months, that way you actually get to learn the system and try different characters and experience different things, like different types of monsters, skill challenges, character powers, class features, rituals and magical items.

Coming from 3.5, I don't like everything, but I do love 4e. I'm really getting into the fluff, too.

Since everyone has given the solid advice already, I'll give another perspective.

First, you get the schematic of the DM's house. Usually can find that in city hall or something. Look for vents. You infiltrate the building in the dead of night with ninja supplise (rope, for one thing), via ventilation and whatever room-travel you can do silently. You get to the DM and you have him swim with the fishes for an hour or so, should help the problem.

But that's just one perspective. I sorta lean towards what the majority is suggesting. This is just if you feel like being a ninja.

I was thinking more along the lines of setting-up a covert sound system that plays subliminal messages: "4e sucks; 3.5 rules", over and over and over.  eventually they will all just start thinking that 3.5 is better and just spontaniously convert back without ever suspecting anything.

Regardless of their opinions about 4e, the real question is this:

How do they feel about 3.5?

I mean, just because you play one edition doesn't mean that you have to dislike all others & not play anything else....

For ex; right now I'm playing in 2 4e games, 2 3.5 games, with 1 Serenity game.  And no, neither of the 3.5 games are simply wrapping up - infact they both started well after the realease of 4e.

It's hard to like a game you do not know how to play. I would suggest you learn how to play. Perhaps after you learned how to play, you may like it.

check my sig for the demo rules of 4th. it's hardly eveything you need to learn the game inside-out, but enough to be familiar with it, especially with the pregens & character generator.

i would recommend sitting in on a game with your buddies before jumping in, quietly taking a few notes and asking the group & GM questions afterwords based on your observations. bring some of the generated (pregen & chargen) characters so they explain a few of the things to you. at this point you should have at least an idea of how the game plays. ask if you can join for a few sessions as a player to give it an honest go. "forget" what you knew about 3rd, and play 4th as a whole new game, just to have fun. in the end you'll at least know if you can enjoy it enough to play with them or not.

if you can't stomach 4th, as previous posters said, ask them how they feel about 3rd and learning it. point them to the srd in my sig for free information on the classes and mechanics if they don't have the books. offer to GM for a bit. let them give 3rd as honest a shot as you gave 4th.

If your group doesn't offer the games that you want to play - and you are unwilling to try something new - then perhaps you should check out some play-by-post games. There are a number of them on these boards that feature not only 3.5e and 4e but also a variety of game systems.

I have a number of them linked in my signature - if you have any questions about them - shoot me a PM.
