#1 Shadowfax7 Sep 30, 2009 20:07:05	A few questions on following tracks: 1) Do you no longer take a speed penalty to follow tracks ? 2) Is the Perception check to find/follow tracks only able to be tried once, unless circumstances change ? 3) Are there any feats available for Rangers to make them better at following tracks than just any character trained in Perception ?

Depends on how lagre an area you need to search to find them. 2) Is the Perception check to find/follow tracks only able to be tried once, unless circumstances change ?   No. 3) Are there any feats available for Rangers to make them better at following tracks than just any character trained in Perception ? Not aware, but check the books.
#3 AbdulAlhazred Sep 30, 2009 21:40:32	There's no speed penalty defined, no. I'd say basically the speed penalty would be when the party inevitably loses the tracks they have to stop and search to find them again, which will probably happen and tend to slow them down. There is no defined time period for which a given perception check remains effective. So yes I would say when conditions change, when the story might dictate, after the party rests, etc. Its up to the DM to determine. There is a feat, I think in Martial Power that does something for tracking. I don't recall the exact details. The thing is that generally any extensive tracking is likely to be part of (or all of) a skill challenge of some kind. In that case you will just have the party try to make N rolls before 3 failures. They always eventually follow the tracks or fail and lose them if you want the SC to go that way. As a DM you have total freedom to structure the challenge as you like.
#4 slightlyepic Oct 01, 2009 5:43:53	I don't think there's a ranger feat but there's a Shifter one called Wild Senses (PHB2) which allows you to reroll tracking rolls and use either result and also have a +3 initiative bonus.

I found it, Expert Tracker. Its in MP p135. You get a +5 feat bonus to perception checks to find tracks and you can impose a -5 to other's chances of finding your tracks (and those of up to 10 allies). Very much the "I'm an expert tracker" feat. The class restriction to ranger I find a bit annoying though. Seems like a bit of pigeonholing that wasn't really necessary. I don't see why a fighter etc should be forbidden to be a good tracker or compelled to burn 2 feats to become such.
