| #1revan54115110Apr 11, 2008 20:17:10 | Ok the party in the game that I am in have captured a evil mage and despite all my arguing on the subject we are taking him back alive (thought in all honesty i say kill him and be done with it.) ok we are have gagged and put something over the eyes and put shackles and a sack over the hands, and shackles on his feet to make walking harder. Have I mist any way that this could bite us in the ass? |
| #2tobias_bluesummersApr 11, 2008 20:19:39 | Just play it safe and subdual him into unconsciousness. That way he can't do anything funny. You're going to be moving slow as is since he's so bound up. |
| #3zeratulcraftApr 11, 2008 20:38:55 | You're still gonna get boned if he has a silent stilled dimension door prepared. The odds of that are kinda slim, but as soon as I could, it was a permanent in one of my spell slots. |
| #4callistaApr 11, 2008 21:16:12 | Same here. If your DM is like me, he'll have that. I suggest a Flesh to Stone, followed by Shrink Object, followed by Break Enchantment at your destination. |
| #512sharkApr 11, 2008 21:31:07 | And a little Wheel-of-Saps assembly rigged to the wheel axle of the cart to beat him constantly over the head for good measure. |
| #6kelb_havocApr 12, 2008 0:17:33 | On a vicious note, cut his fingers/hands off and cut out his tongue. In-spite of this advice, I hope your dm doesn't kick you in the a$$ too hard for not killing him outright, mercy shouldn't be punished :P Edit: On a less vicious/evil note, if he's a wizard remind the DM that the baddy doesn't have his spellbook with which to prepare his spells. |
| #7KruskApr 12, 2008 0:26:34 | I would take the sacs off of his hands, so you can see if he begins casting spells. Then have someone stand behind him as he is forced to march/drug and if you see them start wiggling start swinging at them. Depending on how cruel your group, you could always remove the fingers and tongue. Then apply a regeneration spell at your destination if you need to. Very hard to cast spells this way. Consider forcing him/her to stay awake all night, so that they can not prepare spells. Might be helpful if they prepare still silent spells. |

The odds of that are kinda slim, but as soon as I could, it was a permanent in one of my spell slots. The odds of that are slim indeed. Dimension Door has only Verbal components, so stilling it is VERY unlikely. :P |
| #9FireclaveApr 12, 2008 1:52:18 | If the mage is a wizard, Ray O' Stupidity him into unconsciousness. If Sorcerer, Ego Whip. If you don't have access to Ray of Stupidity, a cat familiar would also work. |
| #10metzenApr 12, 2008 12:50:46 | Put out his eyes, keep him gaged for one day and the put out his eyes, he can't prepare or cast from scrolls any more so you should be farily safe ( unless he had a scoll in Brailles just in case:P ), after that just keep his hands tied. |
| #11guardian1Apr 12, 2008 13:39:42 | There seems to be one big detail we're forgetting here. That is, what are the levels we're talking about? If the characters are a high enough level(s), they can afford a pair of Antimagic Shackles. Otherwise, as Kelb_Havoc suggested, get the spellbook. |
| #12FireclaveApr 12, 2008 19:18:13 | Otherwise, as Kelb_Havoc suggested, get the spellbook. A paranoid enough wizard will take Spell Mastery at least once, so that trick's not guaranteed to worked (on it's own at least). |
| #13syrinthApr 12, 2008 19:37:47 | Make sure he doesn't get 8 hours of uninterrupted rest each day in case of spell mastery |
| #14StevenOApr 12, 2008 21:40:09 | You're still gonna get boned if he has a silent stilled dimension door prepared. The odds of that are kinda slim, but as soon as I could, it was a permanent in one of my spell slots. A silent Dimensional Door is all that is needed to cast that spell without any other requirements. Of course if he has that prepared how'd you manage to capture him in the first place. Now a DM should award players for capturing at least some "important" NPCs especially in a good and/or lawful aligned party. Taking away his spellbook limits a wizard from gaining new spells and taking away the spell component pouch also limits some spells. Of course bound and gagged fix the two other spell components although little can be done to prevent the casting of a componentless spell that is in memory. Another thing your party should do is dress that wizard in the heaviest armor available and strap on a big shield such that he can't drop it. Binding may be a simpler method of prevententing somantic spells but give him a big enough ASF and you accomplish almost the same thing. Besides, this extra armor helps ensure the prisoner's safety while at the same time limiting his attacks and skills presuming non-profiencency. |
