What value do you use assign to magic items (if any); the purchase price, the sale price or something else?

I'm not in a game right now; I just run a game. However, every group I've been in, and the group that I'm running for right now, have always done things the same way...

Money, gems, and other cash-equivalent items are divided as equally as possible, sometimes siphoning off a bit for a "party fund". Equipment is distributed to anyone who wants to use it, regardless of value. Equipment that no one wants, or old equipment being replaced, is sold and the value is distributed equally.

There are certain exceptions to this. Namely, when an item's monetary value far exceeds its usefulness to the party, even if someone CAN use it, sometimes the party will vote to sell it and distribute the proceeds.

Non-magic treasure (money, gems, jewelry, etc): Buy group supplies and then split up the rest evenly with one share going to the party fund.

Magic items: Give it to the person who can make the most use out of it. If items are later sold or melted down, that money/material goes to the person who had the item.

Mostly we try to get the most group benefit out of our treasure.

Nov 25, 2008 0:45:06 For me, it's always been the person who best can use the item gets it, and when it's exceeded its usefulness for that person, it is passed around to anyone else it can help "upgrade." If it's just sold, the person who sells it hangs on the the money.

If a group expenditure is needed, we just pool our individual resources, or "borrow" from each other with no interest.

Money/gems/art split as evenly as possible when found.

Magic Items are given to the PC who can use it, if nobody wants it then we sell it and put the money into the pool.

I personally don't like this idea. From the standpoint of the character, I would never want an arrangement where all of my funds are shared with everyone else. I would want an amount that I can call Mine, and that I can do as I please with.
