So as per the subject line, I'm having difficulty finding a group to play with. I've played some previous editions of D&D but am new to 4e and am not sure if I should keep trying to find some groups locally or somehow try an online one (which I have no idea about). I've been looking at local comic book stores and some folks there have said there are groups but they are either all full or haven't gotten back to me. Any ideas on how to find a group?

Welcome to the Interwebs!  :P

Joking aside, playing D&D with online groups is thriving rather nicely these days.  The two common types are play-by-post games where the groups make their moves, attacks, and roleplaying far more slowly than a common session via forum posting.  It is however a boon to any who enjoy the roleplaying element more, able to include fine detail about everything from their conversation to convince the duke to raise an army down to the next attack against that goblin raider.  A place like Myth-Weavers is good to look at for this.

The other type is live over voice-chat such as Skype or Ventrilo and using a second program like Maptools or Fantasy Grounds 2.  In theory WotC are also working on a 'virtual table top' program like these but God alone knows when or if it will make a public appearance.  I play in two online groups that use the Skype+Maptools combo, though will be switching one over to FG2 soon for various reasons.  Good hunting.

I can recommend Pen and Paper Games as a good website to find a group/players.  I have used it in the past look for a group to join and was unsuccessful in my area.  however, when i started DM'n, i found two players rather quickly and they were normal people (not serial killers).  So i'd go there.  it's a great online source for finding groups/players.

You said you tried the local d and d shop?  normally those shops run encounters on wednesdays, which is a good way to become familiar with fourth edition as well as possibly put up a poster about looking for a d and d group to join.  Best of luck in your search.

are you located in south central Wisconsin by chance?

nah I'm in western Washington state actually. Thanks, I'll try pen and paper games. There is an encounter group that I've heard of, and I have a friend to DM's not too far from me, he's trying to hook me up as well.

I'm working on (just for fun) a light web based tool to run online games with - but just getting started.  Hopefully it will encourage people to run online games instead of world of warcraft :-)

You have a DDI account, the VT beta is open to all DDI subscribers, go check it out.

I had good luck using meetup.com to find gaming groups. You might try that.

I posted a few times about memory leaks where the map slows down to a crawl.  I've also had dice just stop working.  And this was after just trying a few times.  While I haven't caught up with features, what I'm working on is 10 times faster to create characters, you can custom build monsters, load your own character tokens, your own maps etc.

Introduce new players to the game. Find some of your friends who are imaginative, or enjoy tactical combat, and then sell it based on their own preferences. Not only will you end up with a group of people you like, you'll be introducing new people to the system which is good for everyone. Just be prepared to take it slow at first.

To add a different opinion on the DDI VTT, I have been using it for 3 months and have not had any memory issues like Cassan has.

That being the case, I suggest you have a look at it at least once, try it and get into a game (there are plenty of them around) and see what you think.

It is a beta though, so there could be problems from time to time, however, I have not really come across any game breaking ones.

Where at in western washington? Some friends and I just started playing 4E through WotC Encounters and want to get a group together to play some more in depth games. It will probably be after the new year as we're finishing our current campeign first. We're in Peirce and King County. Message me if you're interested.

rpgtonight.com is a site that I recently found. They have unique forum, based around rpgs. Rightnow, I'm  looking for players for a
3.5 edition game. Its  pretty magic based, but you can be any class, with level 3 as the starting level. If you're intersted, email me at trevorengel@yahoo.com. Also, be sureto sign up for rpgtonight.

I have the same problem right now. Can't find any local games for any system.

I also can't stand online gaming. Completely ruins immersion for me and the experience of gaming (sitting around a table with a bunch of friends).

I wish this site offered better services for finding groups and other players locally, other than a hidden away forum that never gets used.
